Interesting discussion around the cosmetic only fights. FFXIV does this with the Ultimate Raids, its purely cosmetic and title oriented and I feel that it is reasonably popular. Granted it could be done better as it is locked behind completed the full savage tier prior to it, but there are situations where cosmetic only is a good idea. I feel Cutting Edge shouldn't exist, because it does make people feel they need it to be a competitive guild, but its a hard one. If Fyrakk and Tindrall were cosmetic only, what would happen to their heroic loot? Would that drop elsewhere or would it not happen at all?

tank do interesting things with adds and swaps, healers have their ramp up fun, and the gronk do big number, everyone is happy.

you call the dps buff ice cold, and you make the coolest dps race in wow history if you tune it right.

the dps get the dot, there are some icicles that are dropped and that disapear if you dont use them, but the dot is long and mild so clearing ti early can one shot you unless u use personals or externals, but definitley doable for all classes and necessary for most people to meet the dps check. some weird frost mage dude or something could have said "hey this guy is really hot so i will throw you ice to cool off, but be carefull about the ice exploding into steam" idk some generic lore thing and then you would have a really cool dps race fight if tuned correctly

you know what would have made magmabro good? if they buffed his hp and added some mechanics that made the dps gain damage when they did it right, so lets say they go pick up some orb that clears a dot or something, but the dot does half of the remaining damage when you clear it, but you gain more damage and haste the more damage u take, and its more of a dps race as well as a heal race, and make the tanks have to jump into the lava, tank an add and use a frost bomb thingy or something to freeze it in place killing it, idk something a bit more extra and its a killer fight.

dont play lotro nowadays, but when i did a year ago or more, the tanking gameplay in that game was way cooler than in wow imo. aggro is harder, you have aoe taunts that copy threat, and you mostly cannot hold threat without copying in the right settings, you have to use self healing aggro and all sorts of things, there is fights where you can kite as a strat properly, wow just has weird tank swaps and basic bitch tank mechanics, no real add management, just pull everything and do something that has damage and threat quick, and if you play your cds right and self heals right its very unlikley you die without getting one shot. i think fights that has adds that must be managed, kited and are actually dangerous for tanks to just tank and spank is good, bring back necessary cc strats and slower paced more punishing mechanics that has to be managed, not just a bunch of shit on the floor. for example in the last boss of the raid tier i played there are dragons that spawn in the large dragon fight that has to be away from the team or it debuffs everyone and it is good night, so you basically eith need 3 tanks or you need to be really clever with the adds and nuke them down quick while managing the other 8-10 adds that spawn in the harder waves, that fight feels better than wow fights even though wow is a lot more polished, at least as a tank imo. what they could just joink from lotro is to have adds that can be cc'd, but that get immunities from that type of cc on use, and so to live a 2 min wave you need to use multiple kinds of cc per add and so on, its better than just a bunch of shit on the floor.

But the small expertise on asking the right persons input at the right time, or introducing ideas/topics at the right time is really showing the skill you’ve gained and it makes these conversations so enjoyable to listen to.

Max made a point about visibility on Nymue and I would have to strongly disagree, this might all just boil down to WoW having very bad accessibility options but as a colorblind person who struggles with greens Nymue was not only the hardest but also most frustrating boss as most of the time I felt like I had 0 say in some of the mistakes I made because I LITERALLY couldn't see the green lines when they were above the lines on the floor that emitted the small hue(?) to indicate it was active.

nelth is easy to fix, but it destroys the fight, if you made the dot on wall break modify by the mitigations of the person being flung, but only for tank specs, such that dps still cant do nothing. but then, it would almost certainly be correct to just use defensive cds and break multiple walls as a time just for cleaner routing.

as long as your warlock doesnt lag and moves early killing half the dps...

my favorite boss this season is seigecraft. technically mop remixis dragonflight. and in SoO you could do a split strat if your dps was good for the pair boss in the town square dont remember then name, that i invented because my group was struggling with the mechanics of one of them, so we did a coordinated tomb stone, everyone stacked and we stacked those tomb stones inside each other and just went slowly forward as a well oiled machine, did have some lag wipes to it but it was real easy to deal with. im telling you, people did the wrong boss, the tomb stone one is much easier.

To be fair, as fair minded and nuanced as asmongold CAN be, most of his retail takes are hot garbage. He recently said, perhaps off the cuff but still, that WoW was the worst pay to win game of them all. It may not have been a considered opinion, but the fact he had zero pause in making that statement goes to show how unhinged his view of retail is.

I don't know about all of you, but I'd rather do the same raid boss, over and over, for weeks, with a bunch of good people trying their best, than burn through the whole raid inside of a week with a bunch of pros... that were all toxic a-holes. I want to see the content and get the gear too, but it's so much more satisfying when that boss finally goes down with a group of people you honestly like and are proud to know. the content is good. every expac has been just fine. it's the people that make the difference, not add-ons, not boss mechanics... it's the people. if you're a good/ great player, I'd suggest you have the power to make the game great for people... or horrible. Take that power seriously as if you don't, people will keep leaving, servers will keep dying, and the world we love to spend time in... will crumble.

theres a day9 video where he basically goes through on boarding for different versions of WoW and he looks at it from a design perspective + he's an ex high level competitive starcraft player so while he doesn't have a breadth of MMO experience he has a ton of high level experience.

Anyone who thinks 40 mans are a good idea now should go back and watch some footage of the WoW 10th Anniversary event. They brought back 40 man LFR difficulty Molten Core and I kid you not I was in there for almost 4 hours. Had a guildie at the time get stuck for the better part of 5. To think anyone would want a 40 man raid that has any sort of REAL difficulty just doesn't know what they are talking about.

Just like with Exploding Shot have it instead be a passive. Instead of a 45 second cd. after 10 presses of like Steady Shot have the next usage change into an exploding shot instead. And you can have a visual with it where occasional little explosions build up around your character as you use them until you are ready to explode for that final shot. It's still a 45 sec. cd in essence, but you remove the button and instead bake it into another that adds another cool visual to it. Plenty of ways to do that shit and make there be less complex rotations. and oops I missed the window for this button now my dps is trash.

One thing that for some reason just isn't being acknowledged. M+ is the biggest toxicity breeding ground i've ever experienced in any form of PvE in any game I've ever played. The limited # of players, timer, endurance test compared to a raid (you fail you go again, M+ you fail and you lose), key depletion, trash mechanics... As a tank main who peaked at #2 on a popular server (for a few weeks, I BURNED out) and doing so with a lot of pugs, I sincerely think tanking high keys for pugs even in comms, is the worst experience I've ever had in gaming. Its why I've given up on key pushing. I still really enjoy it in a vacuum for what it is, but I've seen M+ turn some of the most well - adjusted and respectful players in my guild into there absolute worst selves. M+ has the League effect. It just brings out the worst in almost everybody. That's not even mentioning pugging high keys. If you do, stop. Please, stop. Find a team, or stop. Trust me. Stop. Its one of the worst experiences in gaming. If your a META DPS maybeee, but if your healing or tanking high keys in pugs you're essentially punching yourself in the nads with an iron knuckle. Nerf was being a b1tch, but James was being an entitled "main character" and that's bad too. That said, I'm not hating on either because I've been a part of one of these situations. Really, they just need to rework the whole system. When this amount of vitriol is semi - regular, there's something fundamentally wrong.

people always seem to forget WoW classic during era worked because it (and other MMO's of it's time) were like interactive chatrooms. You could legit have your entire social life on the game. There was no social media, youtube didn't even exist until after WoW came out. you had AOL messanger, peoples PC's were not even setup for gaming, most were made for just running microsoft word and taking 1 hour to download a 3 minute mp3 song. You'd legit setup a download queue while you sleep so when you woke up you'd have new stuff to listen to. people stayed logged into the game to stay connected to likeminded people, otherwise you had your 60 yr old neighbors and kids who have nothing in common w/ to hangout with. being a gamer wasn't even remotely acceptable as a hobby either, it was and still is seen as a childish thing, so you just needed 40 bodies to fill a 40 man roster. no matter how bad they were, if they were max level and even just hit a boss for 10 seconds it was worth having them. nowadays no one talks lol. and it's been like this for quite some time. you get, "hey, o7, gg's" to show some respect to one another but even that isn't guaranteed or considered connecting with one another. no laughs shared unless you know each other on discord. aka, the only thing that matters if you are the best at your role over every other option, otherwise gtfo of my group.
