Dude I resignate with this video so much. I'm literally in the same position as you. I'm currently 26 and got promoted to a Chef 2 years ago. I want to start investing more time into relationships with others but it's hard when you're just working all the time. At the end of the day being a Chef isn't worth it if you want to actually have a life (spend time with friends, be there for your family, ECT). At the end of the day I just want to have friends, spend time with my family (and have a family of my own) and enjoy my hobbies. Unfortunately being a Chef doesn't allow us to do that, and so many passionate and amazing people get burned out from being trapped in kitchens.

Drama, drama, drama and LOTS OF NARCISSISTIC OWNERS BUT CONGRATS!! If you get staff meal your already a step above. I worked at two places w staff meal and they were the best of all I've ever worked for. It's essential to get through a tough day-to find that connection and comraderie... Smoking is a thing of the past these days... except everyone's high at work and this is a new thing. Not sure how I feel about that. Dishwashing is the number one problem in white areas and this is because no one wants to wash dishes and never did!! I believe this has roots in the racism and privlidge of America. I have NEVER seen this handled in a solid way EVEN by the best of the best. It's slavery end of story. High end and smooth restaurants use three foreign people...crappy restauraunts use alchoholics and it's ALL WRONG AND ALL BAD. I believe you’re 100% wrong about talking. This is a point of tension at restaurants. I think talkers are really helpful and talking to your friends and coworkers can make the day go faster. It also practices communication in general. I find the people that are quiet and work hard are really bad at communicating and cause different problems. There are two personality types, andI think the talkers are the best but there’s always a clash. Obviously you shouldn’t talk that much but you should be able to work and have like conversation. I think that’s an essential skill, but there are a lot of bosses and owners who don’t believe this. I think that’s prejudice. I know that human beings were meant to talk. We were not meant or created by God to keep our mouth shut for 10 hours a day that’s idiotic and the boss is a narcissist if this is what they think. Those same bosses and those same employees have major communication problems, and I noticed they accomplishes a lot less because it takes clear and fast communication to accomplish more for example, if you’re out of something and you have to call somebody ask them or go to the store and do all that extra stuff I noticed that quiet workers don’t take that extra step they don’t go the extra mile for the customers... I agree that restaurants could be a second chance for rejects like myself. Lol. But at the end of the day, I’ve seen it enable more alcoholism then I’ve seen prevented. So I would have to disagree with you 100%. A job has to be easy if you have other goals in life I've tried it all, a dramatic job will not help you with school or overcoming addiction . A job should be supportive of the individual and a healthy boss should encourage and promote and nudge the individual and healthy direction and they should do this for all of their employees so everyone grows and becomes better, but I’ve just never seen this except maybe at extreme high end. Besides that I’ve never seen it at the end of the day. I think this industry is not good for rejects in any way shape or form. At one of my last jobs the boss could not find dishwasher so they had to bribe them with alcohol, they told them they cannot drink it at work though, but they would have six packs sitting next to them. On top of that, they would get a free shift drink at the end of the day, but the bartenders always overserved them..this is why college girls serve..it's free from the idiocy of back of house .

pretty much exactly how my day as a line cook is, i love every min of it, prepping cleaning and the lunch and dinner services are like controlled chaos.

Just quit the restaurant industry as a Sous Chef after nine years, the hours and lack of work life balance is what did it. Just not worth it for me anymore.

i was just going to say, what amazing cooking skills until, come on man, what are you two good looking men wasting your meat suit, stop wasting your life energy on bodies you already have, get to the female body immediately. All this gay business is just going to bring about the destruction of human beings faster than an ageless homosexual trying to nut themselves.

So here’s the thing my dream on my life was to be the chef of my own café style restaurant, but I can’t afford culinary school, but I’ve been cooking since I was like 10 years old I gave up on my dream for a while because my dad said it wasn’t worth it I’m trying again. I think I would benefit more from taking a couple different culinary courses instead of trying to get a culinary degree so I can learn some technical things. I just really love cooking and losing a smile on peoples faces when they enjoy my food.

Do you have to take the stupid useless classes like math and English social science and that other stuff? Or do you just learn about food and restaurant stuff?

I’m 30 years old. I’ve worked in farming, jewelry, gaming (blackjack/poker) and I’ve worked in fast food restaurants, smokehouse breweries, sports bars and pubs both in the kitchen and front of house off and on in between the other industries. After all of my experiences I’m still struggling to find myself and what I want to do with my life. I feel like at 30 my life is just beginning. I’m thinking of going to culinary school to be able to earn more as a manager instead of a line cook, but I’m still not sure what I’m going to do. One thing I know is that you’re absolutely right about the toxic environment and substance abuse. Being in a kitchen with low life people can be one of the most stressful jobs anybody can experience so I think culinary school is only necessary if you have a specific goal in mind. Like studying pastries or certain techniques, or becoming a manager faster than slaving at the company for 5+ years. Thank you for the video

If you aren't tough, the restaurent industry will make you an alcoholic, smoker, and/or suicidal. I know most cooks to be like this, including myself. You'll have to deal with sexual harrasment and bullying from most kitchens. That has been my experience at least.

My god I miss being prep, especially morning prep. No one fucks with you, you get to taste everything, no orders, no detailing everything after having your ass kicked, just knocking out batches and prepping sauces and seasonings then bye-bye. Good times.

Hi. Random question: we are a farm about to do our first lettuce delivery (mixed leaves) to a high end restaurant. Which of the following ways would win us points for delivering it correctly: 1. plastic bag, 2. polycarbonate food pan lined with paper towel (or no liner?), 3. SS food pan lined with paper towel (or no liner?), or 4. other?

Lmaooo I forget some people work in higher end restaurants where they have to work for promotions. I was a dishwasher and they decided to throw me on the line one day and kept me there. I was actually upset I got promoted 😂

well tf am I supposed to for work then?? Restaurant industry sucks for the hours and demands, tech industry sucks because of all the GROPING and sexual harassment, politics suck because honest people get chewed out and spat, retail isn't long-term, neither is sports, construction will break down your body and requires a lot of experience before entering and anything in academia sucks because they're doing away with tenured and paying less. There is literally no industry that won't make your life hell

To be honest whenever I work at a restaurant it's usually filled with people my age (around 20) and I usually create really good long lasting friendships. I know it sucks but if you're like me, (a person who just works because they need to) then that at least takes a lot of the edge off. Now granted not all restaurants are the same but I typically find the most character development in these environments.

You didn’t mention the Constant standing pacing back and forth picking up heavy pots pans sheet treys using your arms and hands fast and consistently to the point where arthritis and carpal tunnel are common conditions among line cooks or the stress of seeing over 25 plus orders with over 80 plus items changes to dishes remember which items go with what ticket remembering all the recipes knowing how to work with fire hot metal and sharp knife’s quickly under stress and pressure without cutting your finger off or getting too bad of a burn the kitchen is a hell scape if you know someone who works in a kitchen respect them if they ask for a favor like hey babe can you wash the dishes or can you feed the cats could you heat my food up etc do it for them because compared to a line cook your life is not hard
