I've known Steve Soest for 40 years and he is not only one of the finest human beings on the plan, but definitely the "go to guy" for work on vintage Fenders, G&L's, Gibson, etc. The guy is a WIZARD!!

That intro was awesome. Thanks for showcasing one of your fellow mad scientists Colleen. Keep up the great work.

He seems like a really cool guy and glade to see him pass the Gibsun catalogue down. I enjoy your videos of the repair shops and stories and the screw ups and how they are handled. I don't think there is a repair shop anywhere that mistakes are not made.

So cool, what an awesome chat you had. That barn for a workshop really speaks to how grounded of a repairman Steve is. Colleen the look of genuine admiration for the Gibson handbook said it all also, like it was what you had been looking for your whole life. Again, so cool. 😊

Hi Steve! How are you? Scott Freilich sent me to you, to fix my new custom shop LP. (2003) I came all of the way from Indian Wells. You liked the guitar, (it had an amazing top) I told you that you could take it to your gig. Don’t know if you did. You even gave me some of your bands CD’s.. I still listen to those CD’s , it’s Real surf music. Love it. Scott passed a few years ago. We were close friends for a long time. Guess he’s gigging with the band up there. Take care!

Very cool interview! Dick Dale was a friend for many years. He had bought an airplane from where I worked at the Fresno Jet Center. Thanks for posting.

I took a guitar to Steve for a setup sometime around 1985-1989. I told him I liked 9's with low action and he grimaced but didn't say anything or advise otherwise. I could be wrong but I recall his shop being in Santa Ana. He was and still is a nice guy. I'd go see him for some repairs but unfortunately I'm about 400 miles away.

Steve is a good guy. He hooked me up with Doc Kauffman. I wanted to learn guitar repair. Doc was absolutely the nicest guy. But sadly my patience is that of a gnat and I'd be breaking guitars in a fit of rage if they didn't "obey" as I tried to repair them. So I got out of that end of the biz. I used to visit Doc mid day and he'd stop all work, invite me inside, offer me lunch and then he'd sit on a lazy boy with a tv tray on a stand and watch re runs of The Newlywed Game and cackle at the bad jokes...all while sipping on a giant sweet ice tea and eating a red onion raw, chomping into it like it was an apple...lol. Come to find out raw red onions are great for the heart and arteries - so Doc was on to something...

Great interview, Colleen. I really enjoyed someone that started playing a few years after I did and like me, necessity prompted us to learn to work on our guitars (Set-ups, polishing frets, etc). It was a major bonus to see him pass the Master Service Manual to you. Fantastic, Steve. Thank you again for the great video!

.....another Tony Alamia introduction, I met Steve my senior year in high school when I did the infamous Les Paul Custom neck dive and cracked the headstock. Tony took me to Steve's first barn where the repair was perfectly transacted. A couple years later I took a '68 Strat to him that simply would not stay in tune up the neck. He was the one that discovered and had the courage to tell me that the body was warped and it would never play in tune. BTW my 50th class reunion is later this month.

Several years with Dick Dale? This man's poor ears! Great interview! It's wonderful to see you showcase techs with such vast experiences. Also can you get a stunt dog for your Distrokid ads? Hank is not a generous scene partner.

It appears that this guy is an OG first-bairn guitar repairman and when he passes he'll be one of the last-bairn as well! 😉 I hope he has had apprentices over the years so that some people will be able to carry on with his knowledge.
