No solution. √a is defined as the non-negative b∈ℝ for which b²=a. mrhtutoring proved that if a solution exists, it must be -1. Substituting x by -1 on the left hand side of the equation yields √(3×(-1)) = √(-3). There is no b∈ℝ for which b²=-3. That's why the equation has no solution. Complex numbers do not even enter the scene.

I would say; x=-1 is fine,.. regardless considerations about complex numbers. The solution x=-1 satisfies the only relevant criterion about the equation, being equal on both sides of the equal-sign. That someones become nervous about negative roots is only a problem for this person, not for this equation.

I'm still like wait, you can just get rid of one x and decrement the coefficient of the other through SUBTRACTION? I've been thinking about it and I still don't see why not, but part of my brain is going "coefficients are resolved through division; terms separated by addition or subtraction must be added or subtracted. All else is _verboten."_ Someone must have put that there. The further I get from actively practicing algebra, the weirder it gets. Just plain old, small a algebra. Although leaving aside the complex plane, I did notice instructor was AWFULLY breezy about the +/- aspect of even radicals and exponents.

what he did by subtracting x from both sides is completely valid - think about what 3x means : it is x + x + x : so subtracting x from this is fine. 'Common coefficients' can be resolved through divsion but that isn't the case here.

When we square both sides, we can change the sign of the LHS or RHS. Like here, He does √(x-2)² but (x-2)² is equal to (2-x)² so we can solve it like this: √3x=√(x-2) √(3x)²=√(x-2)² 3x=√(2-x)² 3x=2-x 4x=2 x=½ But if we plug in a value of x, we see that it is an imcorrect solution. We can do the same with 3x and write (3x)² as (-3x)². Hope this helps! (Edit:I made a mistake thanks to the comments for correcting it lol)

I understand where the reasoning comes from, but it is incorrect; if you plug in x=1/2 you get sqrt(3/2)=sqrt(-3/2), which is incorrect.

It’s no solution. By definition of the square root function, the domain is that 3x >= 0 and x - 2 >= 0, meaning that x >= 2. x = -1 falls outside of the domain, making it an invalid solution.
