Hi. What drum set would you recommend for rap,funk, jazz,etc? Thanks!
@KillerDrumsTV
@KillerDrumsTV 7 күн бұрын
You'll probably need a 20" kick, 12 Tom and try to go 15" floor (a 14 is too small and a 16 too big. Snare get an ally. All the major drum makers have their own version. I like Ludwig's the least; Noble and coolly do it best, and British drum co has a classic one also . As far as kit brand, all are great, but find one you love the sound of when play it. Gretsch make a great jazz kit at several price points. Keep in mind shells with rering will be higher pitched shell and become doinky, instead of that classic no rering gretsch jass tone. All the best, Tony.

Cheers mate. I'm in Australia, I use Bostik spray on contact adhesive, the brush version can cause lumps and bubbles from being uneven. I have a couple of rewrap videos already shot, just sorting out editing. So keep an eye out for those. Here is a link to the brush-on version www.bostik.com/australia/en_AU/catalog/product/construction/apac/australia/product-contact-bond/ I also use this spray on version by Tac - www.lincolnsentry.com.au/tac-adhesive-203-spray-contact-high-heat-clear-20-litre/p/7100162

@@KillerDrumsTV I've just ordered a set of Keller maple shells with a 16 & 18 floor toms, so this will come in useful to fit the legs on these beasts. So, thanks again! did you put heads on the kit the reduce resonance? 2 x 7 mm layered heads from evans is usually just for killing resonance isn't it ? don't sound guys and studio engineers hate ring ? i am confused !
@KillerDrumsTV
@KillerDrumsTV 15 күн бұрын
Hey mate, dampening the heads reduce resonance (with exception of Evans hydraulic heads that deaden the sounds a lot). Outside of that the G2's (a double ply head) is what Jackie likes to use. So that why those heads are on the kit. As far as different heads. The head colours the sound that the shell is making, so makes the drums sound thinner, thicker, more open, less open, darker, brighter and so on. The resonance remains, regardless of heads choice, but may appear more or less depending on the tension/tuning range or the drum. Meaning a small 10" toms you notice more than a 16" drum.

I have a question, as a fellow cabinet maker. What do you think of iron on veneer on a drumshell? Im tempted to try it, but I'm not sure about welts or bubbles. Do you have any experience with that?
@KillerDrumsTV
@KillerDrumsTV Ай бұрын
Hey mate, welcome. A long time ago in Bethlehem (about the late 80's) I tried it when iron on veneers were super wide. A heat gun and iron together was ok, but ended up pulling it all off, and just used unbacked veneer, 2-part glue and a clamping band I made up which worked great. You can also use a vac bag but I preferred the control of a clamping band.

Have you tried making new rings? Ive steamed beech and other hardwoods to make protective edges on custom canoe paddles. Its actually quite easy and inexpensive. With a little practice and math you could precut the scarf joint on the piece while still straight, and then steam it. Beech is a very dense wood but when steamed, it is very easy to shape.

Hey Richard, yes I steam my own rings, drums, and stuff, but in these films I try to do things on the fly and in ways that a DIYer may be able to do at home with what they have there. I took the lazy route and got one of the store-bought versions of this. There are a few different brands that use a shaped isolation foam piece that attaches with velcro wraps to most all stand baskets. But YOURS is a most impressive solution and design! Function and aesthetics are so on point! Speaking of those, that must be the fanciest, most high end snare drum stand I've seen in over four decades of playing drums! But it looks VERY expensive and its crazy that the design doesn't already include something to isolate the metal of the stand from the metal rim of the snare drum. What brand is that, anyway? Anyway, nice work, I am stealing the idea of making a circle cutter out of sharpened drum stand tubes. Thanks!
@KillerDrumsTV
@KillerDrumsTV 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for being observant and your comments. The stand is made out of aircraft aluminium by Axis percussion. They are very expensive. You're right, snare stands should be pre-made with isolation systems, but they aren't, or rarely. Here's a tip: for two decades in the studio I isolate my whole kit from the floor, with a large rubber mat placed under the kit on the floor. This also work better than anything else on a single snare stand or Tom stand. You cut a rubber mat into a disc and pop it under your stand. You can also use dense foam. You will need to check what material you use as some 'rubber or foams' don't isolate vibration. Those discs can be used inside you drum cases for separating toms or just as an extra protector. Have a great day, thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe and invite your drum friends to check it out too.

I gotta say when I listened to the Tours being played the atmosphere in the background sounded way different. I had my headphones on and if you jump back and forth between the other sets, there is a huge difference in the sound quality on the Tours. Not just the drums but the atmosphere in general. Not an accusation at all just saying.

We shot all in a row, on the same night. The only difference was there was a rain storm that came through when we were shooting, but do t know which one/s. The shop is basically a really big tin shed. There is very little post production, and only four mics, which are mainly have Eq is anything to get each mic as close to as its sounds on the mono mic (not used in the videos (as it's recorded on a different device) but used as a reference.)

@@KillerDrumsTV thanks for the response. I don't question your methods or integrity, but I really found the Tour's had more of a raw background sound. Could be just me. I also have a bias towards the Tours, as I believe they are great sound for value. They fill a good size room with a warm deep poomb. I find the birch gets lost in a big room with such a short sustain that turns into a pop. My first drum kit had sustain for days and I fought it in my tiny bedroom, but once I took them to a live gig on a gym stage - BOOM! They were amazing. Big warm and musical. That is what I get from the Tours. Great videos. Love the side by side comps. Cheers!

Why don't drum companies learn from their users that their factory heads are almost always crappy and spend a few more dollars to put good heads on their drums at the factory? Short of that, they could sell the shell packs without heads. They sell kits without cymbals (because all-included cymbals are also almost always crappy), so it wouldn't be really groundbreaking. At least, they could make BOTH optional.

It's a really good point, but it's a consumer driven market in that parents (mostly) only care about the price, as-in lowest cost price. It's a good idea, no have heads as even that's a saving, but I fear that no heads wouldn't change the price, like the government led drive to LED bulbs never changed the power bill. I think, spec-ing what you want when you order and paying only for that is the best way. Great comment . Have a great day.

No! You’d carefully use turps or thinners, depending on thinning base that the original stain is. (Test a small area) Be sure to plug up and or tape all the holes to keep the inside free of the thinning agents, start small and increase as you can manage the increase. Have fun.

As a previous Yamaha player, on school kits mostly, the UT heads really need to be swapped out for better heads, as I know it would improve the sound greatly! Also, why are the mounted toms in reverse on all of the kits displayed? Was this a personal preferance? Just wonderin". Thanks guys!
@KillerDrumsTV
@KillerDrumsTV 6 ай бұрын
Hey mate, yes you are correct the UT are pretty poor heads, all drums come alive when they have quality heads on them. As far as reverse toms, a lot of people do it. Not to copy but because they prefer a larger Tom in front of their snare and use the small Tom to the right, more percussively. In my early days I played 1 up 2down; and three up, and a FT either side. But after 30 years I play all my toms chromatically in reverse, with exception of the floor toms, one each side… my smaller toms now are all reversed from the right to the left: 10, 12, 13 and then 14 on the left of my hi hat above my left hand floor Tom. It’s the oddest thing, but I’m hearing fills and groves more in those terms now, likely more orchestral.

Neil Peart's famous kit from Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures was a Birch Tama Superstar kit. Back in those days the drum companies didn't tell us birch wasn't a preferred wood so we just assumed we liked the sound. Times are much better now that we understand that we should only buy birch (or luan mahogany) if we can't afford much better sounding maple , except of course when there is a special anniversary or President edition then we know by the price they are much better despite the wood.
