The English have made the best music on this planet since the 1960s. Idk what it is- maybe it's the gloomy weather, the post-war sadness, the naturally tortured demeanor of the Anglo-Saxon (I'm Irish-American myself). They just know what notes to hit, at just the right time, and it digs deep into the soul. It's a complete refinement of rock n roll and their music has conquered my life and I LOVE it.

lyrics: Big wheels keep on turning Carrying me home to see my kin Singing songs about the southland I miss Alabamy once again And I think it's a sin, yes Well I heard Mr. Young sing about her Well I heard old Neil put her down Well I hope Neil Young will remember A southern man don't need him around anyhow Sweet home Alabama Where the skies are so blue Sweet Home Alabama Lord, I'm coming home to you In Birmingham they love the governor (Boo, boo, boo) Now we all did what we could do Now Watergate does not bother me Does your conscience bother you? Tell the truth Sweet home Alabama Where the skies are so blue Sweet Home Alabama Lord, I'm coming home to you Here I come Alabama Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers And they've been known to pick a song or two (Yes they do) Lord they get me off so much They pick me up when I'm feeling blue Now how about you? Sweet home Alabama Where the skies are so blue Sweet Home Alabama Lord, I'm coming home to you Sweet home Alabama (Oh sweet home baby) Where the skies are so blue (And the guv'nor's true) Sweet Home Alabama (Lordy) Lord, I'm coming home to you Yea, yea Montgomery's got the answer

It’s really a shame the Verve split at the peak of their fame. Probably for the best though as Richard had different aspirations and moved on from shoegaze to more radio friendly pop music. Early verve were truly brilliant beyond words but never received the notoriety they deserved. One thing especially overlooked is Simon’s bass lines. They are groovy, hypnotic and are a perfect compliment to Nick’s ethereal guitar work. Richard’s style of singing was also different back then, more falsetto and drone-like. I didn’t think I could be more enamored with a band other than The Cure until I discovered early 90s Verve. ❤

The song that transcends time and space, the song that makes your ego disappear, the song that is whole and holy. I read in an interview that Nick McCabe said that during Urban Hymns studio sessions, a spiritual air was present. That very spiritual force in the air played together with them in this song. I know for a fact that something Holy, something that is beyond just human capacity, whether you call it God or whatever, was and is present in this song. This song, from start to finish, is Joy, Beauty and Love.

Wish they had released it earlier in late 90s or 2000s, but at least got it back in 2017 ...

To me it’s the electric guitars of Mcabe and Tong that give this song it depth and sound …and the guitar solo on the album is the apex …..sounds flat here .
