Ashcrofts contribution to forth weren’t as good as the traditional Verve composed songs on that album … the standout being Judas …the demos of the band jamming in their traditional song creation are magical … it appears Ashcroft only had basically one album in him because most of the songs off Alone with Everybody were essentially demos and would be Bsides from Urban Hymns and were also improved immeasurably by Mcabe when he rejoined the band to redefine those songs , just compare Ashcrofts demos to the released versions and you can see the magic , it also would have been nice to have Simon Tong on Forth as well .. he would have really filled out their sound like he did on the previous album.

Massive Verve fan here. This song i possibly among their ten best and considering their brilliant, but relatively small, body of work, I think that’s saying something. Yet…this song was never even released?! Amazing

What a band. They never get the full recognition they deserve for the amazing records they've produced. I have been all in with The Verve since they were just known as Verve. A storm in heaven is such an underrated album as is Northern soul. It shouldn't have took Urban Hyms to show the world just how amazing this band truly were.

What kind of record executive could hear this a go "B Side" The band and producer/s must have put this on the playback and been like "Hell Yeh". Sometimes I just don't understand the world or how that stuff happens!!!

The Verve on their earlier stuff are completely different to their later stuff it's wild. Like they essentially started off really experimental and then just dumbed it down and down with each album to where they seem to have lost their originality.

It's a beautiful song in its own right, but I can completely understand why it was left behind. It wasn't ever going to be a hit without a chorus, and it didn't fit the overall vibe of Urban Hymns. It just wouldn't have sat well on that album. But, to reiterate, it's absolutely beautiful.

The English have made the best music on this planet since the 1960s. Idk what it is- maybe it's the gloomy weather, the post-war sadness, the naturally tortured demeanor of the Anglo-Saxon (I'm Irish-American myself). They just know what notes to hit, at just the right time, and it digs deep into the soul. It's a complete refinement of rock n roll and their music has conquered my life and I LOVE it.
