The Chunin Exams Is STILL The Best Naruto Arc

Chunin Exams are an all time shonen classic arc. I always cherish those arcs where a series really finds itself and takes that rare leap from “really good” to “genuine classic”.

Part 1 is a tie between the chunnin exams and sasuke retrieval arcs. Both are iconic and legendary in what the cast went through in order to survive. Part 2 easily pain arc beats everything that came before and after Shippuden. So many iconic moments and jiraya losing his life.

It’s easy to give it to the Sasuke retrieval arc because everything bad about Sakura is highlighted in the exams. You can’t say that about the retrieval arc. It just has less flaws while still hitting the same highs.

Sasuke Retrieval Arc is definitely a masterpiece too. I respect you having both arcs on the same level. Chunin Arc just felt more grand and had more characters. And The Pain Arc was great, but I do love whatever you call Sasuke's Arc where he fights Itachi too. Both amazing to me

Agree with your take, and well laid out as usual! I was late to the Naruto party, didn't start watching it until college. But having seen both now, I find Part 1 to be more engaging than Shippuden. Shippuden has really cool moments, but it feels like somewhere between Part 1 and Part 2, Kishimoto lost some of that magic touch he had with giving the ensemble some shine and making you feel an emotional stake in everybody.

The problem with the 4th great ninja isn’t just the filler. It’s the completely unnecessary episode padding as well. Earlier this year I went to go watch some episodes of fights I liked and saw that they were all 5-6 episodes (2-2 1/2 hours give or take) and when you watch those same Supercuts on KZbin they’re like 15 minutes. And even with the extra padding it adds NOTHING to it. Which sucks because that could very well have been one of the greatest arcs of any media period if done right but we’re just left with what you said, a pretty avg arc with some amazing moments.

Not an arc per say, but the whole build up to Naruto vs Haku and the emotional connections on play there is by far the best all around "arc" and you get the pay off when you see for the first time, when Naruto goes full Kyuubi-mode. My friend told me to watch the show until that ep. and to tell him after if I wanted to continue watching the show. And yeah, I was hooked. The best arc in my mind is the Akasuki arc when they hunt the tailed beasts, kill off different characters (Jiraya, Asuma etc, and loosing members themselves). I just love the Akasuki that was hinted of during the whole first part of Naruto up until Shippuden and it's a payoff and the climax when Pain blows up the village. First time watching it I was like, “wait what, rewind, rub my eyes and think” did that shit just happen??!!?! So that whoel ride getting to know this mysterious and power group was the best for me. I do love the Chunin exam a lot for the same reasons you mentioned. It's just that the Akasuki arc resonates more with me.

A big problem with original naruto vs shippuden is the focus, cause the original focuses on using the best out of a generalised moveset, cause everyone was using a kunai, and it was a big deal if they threw it with a paper bomb, the stakes came from who could best use that tool set or a specialised one they've cultivated through hard work, whilst in shippuden everyone had there own special ability, which kind of hurt the series in a way, make it more fanservice based with cool moments, like u wouldn't see naruto and sasuke fight with just a kunai, shurrikans and their fists and some basic ninjutsu cause the show had moved them away from that.

1000% agree with this take. So many fights in the OG series required out thinking and out fighting your opponent by using every tool at your disposal, and despite everyone being superhumans, the fights still felt pretty grounded. By the end of shippuden, every fight was basiscally some DBZ "my power level is higher, so I win" situation.

@@chillreview636 it was such a unique situation where everyone kinda felt like they had a fair chance and it was intelligence and determination to overcome your limits allowed you to succeed, plus it made characters like garra, neji, Lee, konkaro, temari, (the guy with the bones) to really stand out, where something like a summon or a fire ball jutsu was a huge deal. And it actually made the protagonist work really well, cause he had to grow to succeed where alot of shows feel like characters grow because the author needs them to.

I do belive the war arc is good for the flashy fights and and cold moments, but filler ruined it, but not all the filler is bad in that, but chunin exam arc was really good for character moments

@@chillreview636 It amazingly conveys the themes of Naruto such as the cycle of hatred, state of the shinobi world and fate. Whether it's through characters teaming up with past enemies or allys fighting against allys of the past, favourite examples for the latter being between Sai and Shin along with Asuma and Team Shikamaru. Really adds that extra bit of dread to the War where the characters see their loved ones being used as puppets for the enemy which is an amazing touch especially when it ties back to Shinobi being no more than tools. How it ties with previous arcs really well which makes it more rewarding to experience, especially when following Narutos journey against the cycle of hatred and choosing his own fate. Along with the character interaction between him and Iruka which is one of my favourite moments from the war arc, showing the growth between both characters. Really think the strategy in the War arc is very overlooked, especially where there were specfic coordinated teams and platoons that handle specific opponents. Not to mention the shape shifting of the white Zetsu which adds another layer of intensity between the characters, with them specfically targeting medical teams and world figures. Not to mention it being the arc where alot of the side cast shines, whether it's new or old characters. There's also the amazing antagonists such as Kabuto and Obito who shares parallels with other characters along with their theme of self identity, Kabuto in particular is very overlooked. There's more I want to talk about with the War arc but this is already pretty long enough😅 One other favourite moment I'll throw in is Gaaras speech and leadership, shows how much he has grown as a character which is just amazing

Neji didn’t know that, but he was still right and that is horrible writing. Naruto only won that fight because he was born better than Neji with the chakra beast inside him because his father was the Hokage. Neji was a slave who worked his self to number one and then lost the fight to someone who was born better than him, but didn’t work as hard as him. How is that good writing there’s no problems like that in the retrieval arc.
