It does not need putty. Why did you put it on it? Because it does not have a single scratch
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 5 күн бұрын
To make a smooth finish on the paintjob later. That’s a standard procedure. As you can see before I used the primer there were some spots were putty remained. These are the spots that needed putty 🙂

The coarser gear used in old ratchets have a lot more degree of angle per tooth with the smaller engine compartments in new cars the old ratchets won't always work in the space available.

Why did you decide to use a metal wedge in the top vs a wooden one?
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft 24 күн бұрын
Because I made the handle out of two parts of wood and glued them together (which isn’t ideal but I didn’t have another option back then) and I thought that making a cut in the top of the handle for a wooden wedge would weaken the handle. Don’t know if that makes sense tbh, but that is what I thought back then. Now I would make a handle out of a solid piece and probably use a wooden wedge.

If your still wondering what it was filled with, rust flakes and expands over time creating an odd crushed potato chip looking slurry and can fill empty spaces like the inside of that lock.

Wonderful! I have a few specific items to praise. First, thank you for using electrolysis for rust removal. It is the least expensive and least invasive rust-removal technique there is, leaving the original metal as intact as possible. Second, it was wonderful to see a restoration in which the tool wasn't tortured with the lazy man's approach of using a grinder or sandblasting, both of which harm the tool's original surface, requiring more time and resulting in unnecessary removal of good metal. The way you did the restoration preserved absolutely as much of the original metal as possible. Finally, a comment on the tool itself: What a great design, doing without a forward-reverse switch and all its attendant potential problems. The one-way rotation of the ratchet is a much simpler and trouble-free design. Overall, great job on a nice tool!

Thank you for your comment and your kind words! Yes, the design of the ratchet is very nice, I like it a lot too!

This movie remembers me to my father who passed away 2 years ago, he was 89. When i was a kid (now 65) i used with him the same tool to remove nails from scap wood to reuse the wood. 50 years not seen it but i found it back when making his barn empty. I only cleaned it and it is still working and still use it, now only for fun.

Nicely done sir. Between the thin metal and small parts, there wasn’t much material for you to work with. The little feet were kind of ugly. The lighter looks far better without them. Great job!
