I did not see any pitting normally associated with rusted steel. It almost seems as if the tool were sprayed with salt water for dramatic effect and demonstration purposes. I applaud the refinishing technique to make the piece museum quality, though.

The piece was not sprayed with salt water 😄 But yeah it was not heavily rusted, most of it was superficial rust so it did not have much pitting. Thank you for your comment!

Maybe do a restoration on that out of balance grinder you're using? The run-out in that wire wheel alone is enough to create seismic events and Tsunamis in Japan.

Lol this video is 3 years old 😄😄 I fixed it long time ago and the issue was the wire brush, not the machine itself

Fun project. Just a note, you should never cut brass with lubricant (in your case drilling with oil). Brass is ALWAYS worked dry (same is true for cast iron). Don’t worry about cooling the drill bit’s either, as brass generally will not create enough heat to draw the temper on a HS steel bit. Also, caution is required when drilling out a hole in brass from a smaller size to a larger one, it can bite too aggressively and can yank the taper holding the drill chuck right out of the tail stock. Be safe.
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Ай бұрын
Thanks for that tip, I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to use lubricant on brass. Why is that? Thank you for your comment!

@@DrHutOfHandcraft One of the main reasons is the way brass cuts. Yes, it creates nice curls and chips but as you may have noticed, it also produces fine dust like particles. This fine dust when combined with a coolant can form a slurry of fine brass that can cause the metal being cut to gall (bind to itself) and ruin the finish of your cut. Essential causing the metal being cut to now be cut by your cutting edge and the slurry (which will tear and rip out micro fragments from the base metal) potentially resulting in a gritty finish. This doesn’t happen in all cases, but it does happen, unlike steel which is resistant to galling under normal circumstances. Aluminum will also gall if two pieces of aluminum are forced to rub together under high pressure (as in a friction fit) and will rip and ‘cold weld’ itself together. With cast iron, the chips are always gritty dust, so coolant will just make a horrible gooey mess with zero advantage. I love your videos, please be safe.

@@user-br9fx5nl8mthank you for your explanation, much appreciated! Yes I experienced what you mentioned with cast, for the next video I drilled into cast and used a little oil for the cut but that was before your explanation 😄 Thanks again!

Good job and nicely done. What about if you wear them in summer? copper and brass with sweaty hands? It's going to leave oxidation marks and terrible smell.

That’s really a good point! I made another brass ring a couple of months ago which I was wearing when it was warm outside and didn’t have those problems. Maybe because I wasn’t wearing it for a whole day. Maybe I will clear coat these ones so I am safe. Thank you for your comment!

All right here we go 1) why does every restoration Channel feel that if they use a half a can of penetrating oil on a screw like it's going to work better it's not because 90% of its on the floor 2) the pointless sanding it just eats time up on the video it doesn't serve a purpose 3) if he would have just used an impact screwdriver he could have broken their screws loose but again more time wasting for the video 4) Goes through all the trouble to make new screws and retap the holes yet doesn't put a drop of oil or grease on them so you can hear them crunch all the way back in. But I will give him props for making his own screws that was impressive
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Ай бұрын
All right, here we go: 1) Don't really know how you got the idea that I used half a can of penetrating oil, but I didn't. Also penetrating oil usually is pretty handy and most of the time works very well, give it a try 2) The "pointless" sanding is for optical reasons because I personally like the look of it. So I guess it's not pointless if I enjoy it right? 3) "He" would have used an impact screwdriver, if "he" had one at that time. I am not going to go around buying tools if I can solve the problem with the options I have. Also: You may be very talented in whatever you do but it's not my first day on the job. I very much doubt that an impact screwdriver would've worked. Maybe an air driven impact driver would've worked, but I also didn't have one of those. Didn't so see how seized that thing was? Didn't the square piece of steel that it bent give you an idea of that? 4) All parts got oiled before reassembly. In future I will include that part, since you aren't the only one to mention that, so I'll give you a point here. 5) Thank you
