How does the leak down apparatus work Darren? You just connected it and it registered a reading. Does it pump air into the camber?

Thanks Darren. I prefer to use a silicone gasket these days and glue it to the rocker cover with RTV sealant. I don't use sealant against the head so that it comes off easily next time.

I wish there was a slightly softer silicon cover gasket available. Sometimes there are imperfections in the head surface and the silicon can't squish into them

Hi Darren, I was interested in your comment about the ECU not reporting any fault codes. On my SPi faults are only reported when the ECU remains powered up. After a power cycle all faults are forgotten as are any adjustments you attempt to make from a computer. I'm not sure if this is how the ECU is designed or whether mine has a fault or is developing dementia. I have an on-going problem with the idle speed being a little too high. Mr Haynes says it should be 850 rpm but mine always wants to run at 950. I can set the idle to 850 via a laptop and it is quite happy to run at that speed until you turn it off - then all is forgotten. I still run with brake shields and have plenty of rattles but it isn't from them. Most of my unwanted noises come from inside the car - many from around the dash and the heater. You fix one and another just appears to take it's place. I guess this is all part of the fun.
@darrensrestorations99115 күн бұрын
I'm not an expert on the ECU logic. All I know is that it rarely shows faults. Most of the ones I have seen are related to low voltage or a disconnected sensor. Regarding the idle speed. The ecu will constantly try to lower the idle speed but if the throttle stop screw had been touched or if there is any air leaks it won't idle properly
@darrenrobertshaw803015 күн бұрын
Hi Darren, that was a great one. Plenty learnt. Interesting that you would run without brake shields. Been looking into this recently as I'm up for removing anything off my mini that rattles.
@darrensrestorations99115 күн бұрын
The shields are for controlling dust and keeping water off the rotors. I'd keep them on if they were more robust. Sadly the cheap design will always lead to failure and rattles.

Why is the belt driven fan needed if the SPI originally had an electric fan anyway? Great series thanks for the info
@darrensrestorations99121 күн бұрын
The electric fan is only there to deal with overheating conditions. The mechanical fan does most of the cooling for low to moderate speed driving.

Hi, how do you aling the driving gear on the distributor axle relative to the rotor? {wih the little pin} kind regards Cornelius
@darrensrestorations991Ай бұрын
Typically the pin is drilled with a slight offset. Meaning it can only go together one way. However I have run into ones that are drilled in the center. With those, I use an old drive dog to position the drive gear to the rotor position.

If someone was doing a budget rebuild on a block (hone, rings and bearings) it seems that this solution would be good to use before hand to clean out the passages.
@darrensrestorations991Ай бұрын
I never recommend doing that type of rebuild, it is false economy. Take the block in and get it properly machined for new pistons, then get the crank done as well. The block would then get a proper chemical cleaning and get rid of the rust. Also, if you had a bare block, it could be soaked in the normal Evaporust product.
@trevorwjАй бұрын
@darrensrestorations991 I never recommend it, but there are many people that do it because they prefer to drive the car rather than let it sit in hopes that they can afford a proper rebuild some day. Machine work in my area is not cheap.
@keithoftheshire2805Ай бұрын
My Mini has Evans waterless coolant which cannot cause corrosion. It also has the benefit of running with no pressure when hot, so it doesn't stress the cooling system, and any leaks would be significantly slower.
@darrensrestorations991Ай бұрын
Yep that will work to keep the corrosion away. No water to cause the rust!

actually I think you’re doing a good job, in all my working life apprentices were given/ put with certain fitters on the shop floor now my Forman always puts one with me but not always other guys! I found out years later it was because I took time to explain exactly what and why they were going about a task in the correct way and giving them pride in their work instead of just treating them like dogs body! Even now in my 70’s I’ve an ex apprentice that pops round to see me for coffee he was 17 when I first met him and he’s nearly 60 now 😊 in other words especially in today’s world where young un’s don’t want to get their hands dirty we have to pass on our skills to those that do want to learn 🙏🏻 carry on with your videos to educate the other as when one’s done a good job self satisfaction in knowing that you can do it, is a good feeling 👍👍👍👍

I think the standard amount of vacuum advance that the canister applies is 15 degrees at full vacuum. Just bolt on the new vacuum canister and you should be good

Hello and thank you for your video. I rebuilt this starter yesterday but after closing everything up, it doesn’t work at all. The “positive” side didn’t have the paper gasket that touches the main body so I used silicone gasket. And the plastic isolator was kind of melted on the old power post so I used heat shrink and electrical tape to isolate that bolt. I thoroughly cleaned the starter, changed the brushes and leveled the copper. Also there is continuity between the “ground” top part and the power post at the bottom. Is that normal because the brushes are touching the same copper plate? Any ideas?
@fagoumaАй бұрын
It was shorting out on the power post. I inserted the old plastic insulator with a tie wrap to hold it in place and now it works!
