Where are your green snips
@ModernMountainLiving22 күн бұрын
You don't need them. Having all three snips on your belt is just added weight. You can make straight cuts with Red snips so you don't need Yellow straight ones. If you need to cut the different direction, just turn them over. So you Only need one set of snips. Experience teaches to keep it simple. Being Left handed with Right handed scissors was something I conquered as a kid. Thanks, Be safe out there.

@ModernMountainLivingАй бұрын
Lexol or clear silicone the gaps if you think it is a big problem depending on your climate/location. Personally I wouldn't be too concerned with making it air tight. Old Norm used to say: If it can't breathe, it will die. As long as wind driven rain gets in there it will need air circulation to dry rather than rot. Humidity will need air too. Thanks

If a panel, say mid-roof, needs replacing, doesn't this require removing all the panels that were installed after it on that plane of the roof? Isn't this a drawback of the raised seam metal roof system?
@ModernMountainLiving2 ай бұрын
With snaplok panels just pop the one you need and the one preceding it to unscrew the clasps.

Try to get financing or a mortgage for unconventional construction. It usually does not happen, not to mention all the roadblocks and hassles from local "authorities". The greater challenge for the upcoming generations, is how to remove single family housing from the investment and speculation arenas AND...how to abolish State extortion via "property taxes". Solve those two and you will find single family housing way more affordable and also more secure than at present. The key is "ownership" which no citizen in today's America has true ownership of their real estate. America is a nation of life long renters.
@ModernMountainLiving2 ай бұрын
We are blessed to be mortgage and debt free. It took careful planning. Here is how we deal with Property taxes: rather than own our own Firetruck, asphalt and snowplow trucks we justify paying taxes. As for law enforcement I utilize LOTS of ammo and enjoy having a backhoe. Aim well

With you on building on top of slab. In the old days, we would also install a stem wall to elevate the exterior siding (wood, steel or ?) from the ground and associated moisture. Yes, more money but it seems to produce a building with minimal maintenance. Recently have watched some run the wood exterior siding right down to the dirt. Not smart. RB holds true to the maxim, "buyer beware". Shitty business practices to be sure.

Yep, the bane of every structure is mitigating moisture.

Wish you had several videos on this subject from start to finish. Especially like to know what to do when the roof may no be exactly square or when working with existing older construction. Also, what weight metal and what type of finishes you selected. Appreciated this type of video for the straightforward, no BS information.
@ModernMountainLiving2 ай бұрын
I use 24 and 26 gauge but never 29 ga. This cabin was when Crinkle finish just came out and I had to have it. The cabin was to replicate the 100 yr old mining structures of the area and the crinkle refracted light rather than look new and shiney. Regarding out of square...I am installing a metal roof on our 96yr old cabin tomorrow. Nothing is square so there will be lots of "pushing and pulling panels" to fool the eye. Thanks for the kind words.

After years of suppliers All crating my standing seam custom orders I finally ran into one and now others that would rather come to your site with their machine on a trailer and produce each panel to length as needed. For the same price this is to the advantage of both parties because shipping these panels (face to face) is where you get the most damage rubbing into each other. Yes there is a way to overlap panels but should not be necessary as I have seen 60' panels so there would be no breaks. Call around I had a supplier willing to drive 2.5 hours to my remote site for the same price.

What’s you use to make the seam? Or is this that click lock stuff?
@ModernMountainLiving4 ай бұрын
This is the "Clip" Snaplock panels I prefer because they don't bind up with thermal changes. The screw down Snaplock panels will oil can if a long panel with expansion contraction. To have used the double brake lock standing seam panels on this site I would have to purchase the machines for rolling the seams which cost 3 times the panels. This site is 4 1/2 hour drive from the nearest crew with those rollers and believe me they will not rent them at any cost. Thanks Nick

Yes, you are right. It is also our process of elimination on what we want to build for our Modern Cabin. A shipping container maybe better then a mobile home. One, cause the container's cheaper. Two it will last a lot longer. Three when you have to move the container, can be moved & won't fall apart. Four it hold value if properly maintained. 😊❤ One thing you have watch out for, is zoning by-laws. Recently a guy wanted to use one as shed. He was found to be in violation of city by-law. The sad part is I saw in that city travel trailers sitting on front yard, store with junk in them. It looked awfully. I thought to myself the by-laws are very lenient in this city ie to the extreme, but it might had to do with lack of complaints.

Clamp a 1x4 next to your cutting path and go. No need to follow a line then. If you were cutting concrete dust or water and dust would be everywhere. Looks like a decent tool. I need to cut out the top of a porch refill below the concrete and then pour a cap on it again. Gotta fix a goofy Amish concrete job.

Do they have to have some specification, caliber (thickness) of the sheet? . I would appreciate any information.
@ModernMountainLiving7 ай бұрын
While the wider(36") "R" panels are most common and used for commercial use, most "metal roofing supply" companies will be able to form "Standing Seam" panels also. A word of warning: some suppliers will come to your site and roll them out there to avoid crating them as they are difficult if not impossible to transport not crated with out major damage. Onsite is an advantage to you and to the supplier. ACE roofing supply and METAL SALES are nationwide but I don't use them. Guage thickness is 26GA but if you have a perfectly flat OSB or Plywood decking 29GA is cheaper but damages easily. My current shop has 24GA which most shops can't produce.
@ModernMountainLiving7 ай бұрын
Jaun, if you tell me town I will try to track down a recommended supplier. Your tile roof is popular in the Southwest from El Paso, Phoenix and Palm Springs since them hold up to the Extreme Sun temps and where you don't have much threat of hail. Remember the panels will expand/contract but Standing Seam are designed for this as the screw down type don't do well. After I respond for your town delete your message if you like. Thanks
