I had the 7-14mm for around 12 months, but due to the fact that I couldn't use filters ( ND, Polarisers or Grads) I sold it and went for the 8 - 25mm. I haven't missed the extra width or stop of light at all. Loving using it.

i love the 8-25 and think the 40-150 will be the best combo and the jump from 25 to 40 can solve walking or cropping (even take a hi res to crop) and the f4 in low light is solved too because in a wide angle you can shoot ridiculously slow hand held, in addition both have manual focus clutch, same button, same filter and if you need more reach simply add a teleconverter, all in less than 2 kg (camera included)

I bought the 8-25mm two months ago. Never had the 7-14 but I had a Nikkor 14-24mm and it has the same Problem -> filters! It‘s really enjoyable to do wide angle shots with this small, sharp and filtery lens. If you don‘t need the f2,8 and this 1mm more wideness, go for the 8-25mm, you‘ll not regret it.
@GuidoVanDeWater2 күн бұрын
I never use much filters especially gnd. I rather take a bracket then attach one of those. So thats why if never bothered me that the 7-14 couldn't take filters. But since I discovered the polarisor last year it started to bug me a lot 😅 so I totally agree with you having the ability to attach filters is absolutely worth the loss of that 1mm... thanks for watching and sharing your experience. grt guido

For nature photography, I take the 8-25mm f/4 and 40-15mm f/2.8 and never feel a need for the intervening focal lengths. However, if I know I'm going to be in some especially tight situations (e.g., caves or buildings), I also pocket my Laowa 6mm f/2, which is very small and lightweight and also gives me a faster aperture; but that is necessary only occasionally. So, I use a variation on the idea of a "trinity."

Why don't switch 40-150 2.8 with the f4?
@GuidoVanDeWater2 күн бұрын
I find the usability of the f2.8 better and it's a bit sharper. For example I want my lenses to have button or clutches for manual focus. That can't be done on the f4 so I need to sacrifice a button on my camera and they are already programmed for other stuff. I made a video about the f4 lens a month or e back. It's great but not for me. At least not at this point. Thanks for watching and your input I appreciate it. Grt guido

I went for the 8-25 for the same operational reasons. Regarding the gap, just crop a little from a 25mm shot. If you are nervous about that approach, use hi-res mode when you can't zoom as much as you would prefer. When I went digital with a Canon 20D (that long ago) I picked up a 17-55 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 with the same mindset - just crop a little if I need to. Nice presentation, lovely photos, looked at your backlog - subscribed.

Do you have any tips for shooting video and using either USB or HDMI link ? Basically I was trying to shoot macro video on a desk with camera on a stand. I thought running a cable to computer with om software would let me blow it up to let me focus better as well as not move the camera . However unlike photo mode it doesn't show you any image with video and connected by USB or HDMI. So then I thought well at least I could use my phone as remote but still had similar problem is there anyway you know maybe buying an official remote ? To focus remotely then click to take video ? If that makes sense ....

@@GuidoVanDeWater One kit-related question if I may. I just acquired the 40-150 f2.8, a lens which I know you love. Would you recommend covering its glass with a protective filter (e.g. Urth UV lens lilter), or not?

I always use the sunhood on this lens so chances of damaging the glass is very little. I have personally thrown away all my uv filters because I noticed they always caused more flair. Guido, there is no doubt the 8-25mm is a great lens and I love the range. As I have previously said, I would love to see OM System give us a complementary lens, say a F4 25-125mm. The two together would make a brilliant combination. The problem for me with taking just the 8-25mm and 40-150mm (both of which I have) is you are missing that critical 26-39mm range and I know I take more images in this range than I do in the 8-25mm range. The 8-25mm comes into its own in more open and uncluttered landscapes, but for me it has limited use in a busy woodland where you are trying to eliminate distractions and simplify your composition. This is where I feel I would miss the 26-39mm range. Having said this, I very often go out with one lens and make do, so I am sure I could make do with the combination you are thinking of.
@GuidoVanDeWater4 күн бұрын
Well that is what I'm trying to figure out over the next few weeks. Am i really not missing that gap from 26-39. I realised that i just don't take much images in that area. And what i took in that area are mostly not the keepers. That being said... ad you can see in the video the few images that I would really hate to miss in that area are some of my all time favourites. So yeah its a difficult decision so I'm happy I can try this for a while first 🙂 thanks for watching and sharing your experiences.

Mooi helder verhaal Guido! Fijn weekend! 👋

I follow your channel and enjoy your simplicity and eye for great composition. However, I wonder why modern society disregards the meaning of words so much. What exactly is "holy" about a set of lenses? You are not the first photographer I have heard referring to the trio of lenses using the exact phrase. The phrase Holy Trinity is a reverent term with deep meaning for Christians and should not be used to refer to that which is material. Or is it okay with you because the term only matters to Christians, and anyone can say whatever they want about those folks?
@GuidoVanDeWater4 күн бұрын
Thank you for supporting my channel and watching the videos. I'm sorry if you feel offended by the way that used the word holy. I personally think there is nothing holy about these lenses, but in online communities and on social media, people always refer to this set as the holy trinity. I think it's because there are no better lenses on the market than these once for the m43 system. At least, that's what they believe. I honestly have nothing against anyone from any religion. I'm not a believer of any religion myself. But I do believe that everyone on this planet has the right to believe whatever they want to believe, and I respect every one of them. So please don't judge me on how I used a single word because you don't know me at all or what I stand for. I tread everyone with respect, and I'm proud to do so. Grt guido

Hi Guido, another great video. I moved from LUMIX to an OM-1 two years ago. Before moving I brought the m-zuiko 8-25 pro lens which complimented my 12-60 kit lens and a 45-200mm lumix lens. My 8-25 pro basically stayed on my lumix camera as it is such a great lens. When I bought my OM-1 I also decided to buy your favourite lens… 40-150mm f2.8 pro with a 1.4 teleconverter. I totally relate to where you are with a two lens combination as it covers a super range of focal lengths with sharp image quality. Your point on weight should not be underestimated especially when travelling. One thing you didn’t cover on your latest video is the macro performance of the 8-25… I have been very impressed with the performance in close up work. I Would like to hear your thoughts in this regard. Looking forward to seeing your latest video on Sunday. Regards John

I know the closest focus distance is about 25cm wich is very short! But I honestly am not a real macro photographer. It is something that I want to get into more but somehow I always endnup with what I love most and that is landscapes. I'm prety sure it does great with macro but I think inwould be terrible in finding compositions with a wide angle macro. I'm always more into shots with the 60mm or the telephoto lenses when I comes down to macro. If you have a macro shot with the 8-25 then I would love to see it because I really can't visualise what it would look like 😅 who knows maybe it will give me renewed inspiration 🙂 thanks for watching and supporting grt guido

Agreed. I prefer the 8-25 over the 7-14. It's lighter, sharper, dramatically better in flare resistance. And for me 7mm is a lot less desirable to include than the 15-25 (bread and butter). I don't need the extra f-stop of light in wide angle. It's a spectacular lens. Panasonic makes a 10-25 f1.7 that's kind of in this space but I have no experience with that. And losing the 8-9 is kind of a big deal, though the extra speed is dramatic.
@GuidoVanDeWater4 күн бұрын
I can only confirm your experience. Except for the Panasonic I've never used that one but I've seen good results with it. But I would also prefer the wider 8-25 i hardly ever need that extra stop of light anyway. Thanks for watching grt guido

Or if I want to go even less cumbersome, 12-100 f/4 plus 6mm and still I have huge range. Whatever people say, micro four thirds overall is still way ahead for compactness.

I don’t have the holy trinity, I have had the 8-25 and 40-150 for some time and love the combination. I also sometimes carry a fisheye in a city rather than pano and love the fun aspect of them. Normally the two and of course not forgetting the 150-400 when required

Me personally I don't really like that fish eye effect. I'm always looking for the more natural looking things and the fish eye is everything but that. But I can see why others like it it's just not for me I guess. Thanks for watching! Grt guido

Hello Guido The best lens is the one you carry with you and less is often more. Grt Ernesto

Totally agree on that statement so I'm doing the right thing here by reducing 1 lens 😅 thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido
