Why did you not just undo both rocker shafts hand tight nut tap it through gently until you can see o ring, cut of old o ring, rubber grease new o ring push it on lots of grease around shaft , then just tighten the nut back up pulling shaft with o ring into place, no need to make a 5 min job in to the way you just put your self through , I have had no problems with both mine done that way.

I'm an old biker from Stevenage, born in 1956 in the Bedwell area. I remember admiring the rockers bombing round the town in the sixties and knew that one day I will get a motorcycle. Our gang used to pub crawl to all the pubs that had live bands playing and was a popular hang out for bikers, or as we were called back then greasers.😂

My '73 is in excellent condition with 10K miles. When oil is filled to the original dipstick full line my bike always drips oil from both breather tubes. The same amount from each tube. I don't have to ride it hard for it to do this. Should I lower the level to the middle mark on my dipstick?
@OldBiker25 күн бұрын
when you drain it, put 2000cc back in not 2500cc and note where the oil level is on the dipstick for future reference

This is exactly why I want to switch mine to points. It’s stock cdi right now but that can fail, or spend who knows how much on an aftermarket ignition and still have it fail, vs a cheap set of good points. I’ll keep a set with me and I can always adjust them or swap them out vs waiting weeks for a more expensive ignition setup to arrive. Yeah you can have spares of anything with you but you can’t beat the price for points. As far as the stator I’m thinking of upgrading that because I know the stock ones get weak too and low voltage can also affect ignition.

The early Pre Unit Triumph's had no provision for an O ring on the rocker shafts .I would just give them a wipe with some Hermitite Green , which you cannont get any more, sadly but you can still get American made Shellac which I do prefer to modern sealants .

Can’t see that working, you are forcing the exhaust through the glass like a filter, not only will it choke the heck out of it but it will thrash the glass in no time

Just some help. The commutator looks like having a bluish ring where the brush path is. Is is indicative of perfect brush spring tension. Too little tension will ultimately cause pitting on the commutator segments, too much results in the copper staying a worn copper color or even grooving circumferential.Removing the bluing really isn't necessary as it's still conducting but just remove dust, grease, etc. An ohm meter with low ohmic scale, Wheatstone, can be used to measure each adjacent comm segment and all should be equal values. Generally if a segment is faulty it will highlight itself when it passes the brush and look different. AS for the irregular brush path circumfrentually this usually means a worn end bush if bushed or a flogged out or ceased non drive end bearing. Which then means the rotor needs to be checked for polling with the field laminations, internal housing. Circumfrential grooves will be seem and when starting the motor an abrasive sound will be heard. Just a few more ideas to check these little blighters. I'd also make sure the carby cleaner isn't able to damage the shellac insulation on the windings.

I got a meriden 750. for a bike that looks great, and handles beautifully .. shame the product design (a.k.a. engineering) is so poxy. Particularly dislike the push fit (‘fit’ is a misnomer) exhausts ..and the crumby switchgear. Love riding it .. but spend far too much time effing around with spanners. BMW’s …you just ride!

Hello; I am near to dismantle both wheels. If may ask; how do you recognize what are the inner ones and the outer ones; I think is by the neck angle. I am asking due to these spokes are SS so I would use it again but do not know how to identify exactly (besides the longer and shorter from one side or the other) Thanks

I just bought some of those baffles on Amazon for like 10 bucks each. I took the plug at the end out of mine. That seemed too restrictive in combination with the fiberglass wrap. I haven't put a ton of miles on them but my 1975 Honda CB750 is quieter and has less popping on decel. Sounds better than the open non-baffled mufflers, and the RMP's seem to drop quicker when I let off the throttle. It would hang up just a little with the old open pipes, no matter how I tuned it.

Good one Cliff , great to hear your voice again , it's unbelievable that Numptys probably pay the 19-quid ! It's the same for most-things out-there though , in NZ they try and screw-you for everything , prices are insane and have always been over-the-top for as-long as I can remember for even the-simplest of things . I think without the balance pipes holding it together those ridiculous T140E. ‘push in fit’ pipes (which hardly ever do fit) would just fall out …. laughable … if it was not tragic … no wonder we lost the business to Japs and Germans! I know mods are available … but … REALLY?

😎👍😎 Im guessing..part of the reason its not cranking over is due to the ignition being turned off..?? Whats your battery voltage..no charger hookedup for 3-4 hrs..whats your voltage when you hold down starter button..??

Got one! … but that exhaust ‘push fit to head’ arrangement (as if Meriden could do tolerances) with the little fin collar for ( it would seem) ornamental function only seems like crap engineering! My T140 is very pretty .. but i am reluctantly going to chop it in for a Honda ( appreciate reliability). will keep the BMW! No surprise to me we lost the market.

Common misconception is that those silencers are peashooters. They are Norton style reverse cone megas. Peashooters are the older triumph and BSA type silencers with the tail pipe.

Is it best to leave a mm or so of the spindle (the o-ring end) sticking out, or should it be totally flush with the rocker box? I've seen a few where that spindle is knocked all the way in, making it totally flush and others that leave a mm or so proud of the rocker box. Maybe it doesn't matter. I don't understand why they don't make the bottom of the tappet more of a round shape... because some of them sit on the valve stems at an angle, so you're only getting the edge of the tappet to make content and measure the clearance with. My 64 TR6 is better about matching up the tappet and the valve stems, they seem to sit a little flatter than my T140.
