I'm new to hunting rifles. Got a Tikka T3x with no mount and I've been having a hard time learning how to navigate mounting solutions. It seems like picatinny rails are the way to go, but I wouldn't even know where to buy them. Most pic rails I find are for mlok/key mod. My Tikka is 308 short action. Where could I find pic rails for my rifle? And how do I know if they're canted or not? Thanks in advance
@2clicksup910
@2clicksup910 18 күн бұрын
Pic Rails that mount onto the receiver are readily available, and the Tikka T3X is a fairly common firearm, so you won’t have any trouble getting one. As far as cant goes, it will be displayed on the packaging, and, being a hunting rifle, I would imagine you would require either a 0-MOA or a 20-MOA rail. I mainly stick to the 0-MOA rails, as I’m generally not trying to hit things in the next suburb. Most gun shops will have them (or can get them), and you can also get them through most of the online retailers. Just stick to the known brands and you’ll be fine. If you’ve got any doubt, just take your firearm into the shop so they can match the appropriate rail to your gun. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Being a 270 shooter like your video, 270's bounce around a bit when fired, I found shooting off a medium firm front bag helped groups, a hard rest would result in vertical flyers. Always something to learn. Interested to see your load for Speer 100grn HP, mine is 2208/48grn, 3300fps. This load virtually cuts foxes in half. I do my load development with chronograph, shows any variations in fps that could cause a flyer. My BRNO has been bedded, trigger job by Tony Small, Sightron S2 4-16x42. Out what did a the Swan barrel cost fitted?

Do you have a list of brass that works best, I have a mix of 6 or so head stamp 223 (mostly ADI and Sako ) I’ve picked up at the local range. I understand some can have a too thick of neck size once a projectile is fitted.
@2clicksup910
@2clicksup910 Ай бұрын
I’ve done PPU, ADI, Frontier, Winchester, Remington, Hornady, Norinco and a couple of others that I don’t even know the make of, and I’ve not had an issue with any of them. So far, I’ve done them all the same way, and they all load up well, they all feed, they all go BANG, and they all extract. 300 Blackout brass can be a bit hard to ring, and somewhat pricey if and when you can get it. Doing this with 223 brass makes it a cost-effective exercise, and it’s not the end of the world if you lose a couple of pieces of brass in the bush. And I’ve experienced no issues with performance.

🇦🇺😎👍I was wondering about those stocks . I’ve got a Howa 243 / 223 varmint rifles ( both have fired under 300 rds since new ) . Both rifles have Hogue rubber over flexible fore ends. Mate what is the difference in weight between the old Hogue and the new MDT stock ?… They say these are sub moa rifles but I don’t seem to have this with mine . One has a 16 power variable scope and the other has a 20 power variable so the sight picture is magnified enough. While I don’t use super premium ammo or reloads yet I do use common brands and only seem to achieve 1” / 1 - 1/2 groups @100 yards.. . I thought perhaps the stock was letting the rifles down. Keep in mind I have achieved 1/2 groups with other rifles ( so I’m not just a crook shot 🤣) so being varmint rifles perhaps I just expect too much ? …While I’m not overly worried, they are still good enough for shooting out the window of a truck in the paddock.
@2clicksup910
@2clicksup910 Ай бұрын
Those HOGUE stocks are fine. They’re pillar bedded, so just make sure everything is tightened down to spec, including scope rings and bases. Consistent reloads with what powder/charge/projectile the rifle likes will make a difference. If it’s hunting accuracy you’re after, it will all come together. As far as weight goes, the new stick has added a little bit (it us noticeable), but not enough to be an issue, as these sort of things aren’t really meant as a “walk-around” rifle.

Id maybe redo the 53.5gn of the 2209 & the SST. Just to see if it was you that made a mistake on the flyer. On your previous 22" barrel the SSTs worked a treat better then the currant barrel IMHO, maybe because it was well run in. If you did favour the 130gn SST id go back to those. The HPs are more for maybe roos & goats, the speer SPBT might be abit hard, where the SST is somewhere inbetween. Before i rebarrelled my CMC 270 it had just a std 22" barrel, it shot best with most projectiles 53.5 or 54gns 2209.
@2clicksup910
@2clicksup910 Ай бұрын
That does seem to be something like a “sweet spot” for that weight projectile, so I think that’s where it’s going to end up. It was the first day out with the new barrel, with a lot of shots fired and the barrel getting quite “warm” at times. I’m quite confident that barrel will settle down more as time goes on, and the large number of rounds and high-ish barrel temperatures are both situations that would rarely occur in the field, so I think we’re OK at this stage.

@2clicksup910
@2clicksup910 Ай бұрын
Firstly, thanks for the positive comments. I have never chronographed anything; I avoid chronographs, as they can (and often do) fill your head with too much information. I vividly remember remember back in my old Trapshooting days and speeds wet staring get printed on boxes; shooters were driven mad in the quest for the perfect speed. They became obsessed and believed 25 feet per second was the difference between success and failure. That speed difference was equivalent to a clay target travelling about 10-12 inches, and I always said that if that was your difference between a hit and a miss, maybe you’ll should consider another endeavour.

The 44.o grains of 2206 is your load. Forget all the blaming yourself for the flyers when you have 2 bullets touching and 1 far away. Load 9 more rounds of the 2206 at 44.0 grains and see if you get repeated good 1/2" 3 shot groups like you did. It helps to clock your velocities also. You sound like you have a lot of good experience and are a good shooter. Thus, I don't think you were causing the flyers. I see this all the time when I'm developing loads and what I have found is one of the main reasons you get a flyer is due to inconsistent neck tension on that one piece of brass in that group.

As I said, I’m not a huge believer in barrel break-in, but I do believe they settle down a bit once they’ve had a few rounds down the tube. It was a big day at the range and I was getting a bit tired and bashed around. Hunting trip soon I’m hoping.
@derekmcmurry
@derekmcmurry Ай бұрын
@@2clicksup910 I used to be serious about barrel break in. Then I learned it's not necessary. I agree with you that they do settle down over time, especially the throat. I just picked up two new Tikka rifles and the first thing I do is borescope them. The 270 Stainless had a lot of chatter where the reamer cut the lands so I took some Kroil and swabbed the bore, then to the Iosso paste out and worked the throat really well. Still rough but a bit better. It's going to take about 40 rounds to smooth it up. The throat on any new barrel, be it custom aftermarket or factory need "seasoning" but not necessarily that old shoot and clean process.

Ive got two 270s, an old CMC Mountaineer on its (tobler 24") second barrel & a Rem700 CDL-SF, I used the 130gn SSTs for a few years then converted to a hot 140gn load. If shooting pigs with the 130s keep your velocitys (sub 3000fps) low to get that extra bit of penetration. Personally for a general purpose load, i use 130gn Interlocks pushed out as fast as i can safely, as the interlocks get alot of penetration.

I’ve always been curious about the caliber, and I must say it’s impressive. Still in the load development stage, but things are showing promise. Quality rifles, particularly new ones, are a bit hard to find in Australia, and there is a lot of used garbage getting about. The caliber itself has waned in popularity over the years, but everyone’s father, grandfather or uncle always seemed to have this mystical 22 Hornet they could pull out of the cupboard and recount all the hunting adventures it had been on.
