Do people in their 50s ever compete in BJJ tournaments?
@robrolls11 күн бұрын
Oh ya ive seen much older! But being able to compete up until 50 is probably my goal haha

Rob, As a 55 yr old just in his first week of JJ, I'm so green (and sore) this is all like a foreign language to me. Really enjoy your explanation and I look forward to the day all of this seems obvious and elementary. Thanks for the vids and all the help.

39 year old 165# 2 strip white belt here. 40 in may. Started bjj last August , I injured a rib about a month in to my training where I did an awkward half cartwheel guard pass attempt (forgot my age for a minute there) and landed on my team mates knee. That knocked me out for almost 3 weeks. Everything hurt , hurt to pull, push , breath. Never got it checked out but it was painful. Made a full recovery there. Love your videos bud. Congrats on the blue belt by the way .

Hahah yes i feel that when you forget age 😂. Right on brotha appreciate it, ive only been training 1-2 week for a month trying to let knee recover completely 🤜🤛

I really enjoyed watching this. I am only three weeks into BJJ and I got so excited and was shouting 'go on' when you applied the triangle. Hats off to you for entering any tournament as they must be nerve wracking enough. Amazing effort!

one other suggestion: when rolling with elijah, if he favors putting himself into top half, then check out the choi bar setup. it's a slick way to get a strong clamp on the nearside arm (the one that's trying to crossface you) while simultaneously using a strong knee shield. it kills his chance to kimura you like he has been, and now allows you to attack. i personally switch back and forth from threatening the choi bar to scooping that nearside leg to enter into leglocks. both the choi bar and the leg lock entry use a bit of inversion, but nothing too crazy. i used to hate getting stuck in bottom half with guys like elijah, but now i am the one purposely putting myself there, and my opponents usually dont know how to deal with it. choi bars (or even just entering the legs) are hard to stop if done correctly. oss

i didnt rewatch the vid but the purple passed pretty effortlessly at least twice, and on the first one you mentioned a sao paulo pass, did he do it on the 2nd one also? either way, there are tons of youtube vids on how to counter, or at the very least defend, every pass imaginable. just me .02 and is a good way to shore up your defense if it's getting past your guard consistently.
@adameckhoff7970Ай бұрын
Hi - Purple Belt here. at 5:32 when you pull guard, have you ever considered going right into New Jersey utilizing the Rubber Guard. I mean, you swing your leg over that arm you have omaplata, gogoplata set ups, along with meathook variations, gogoclinch and hindilutines. you can also hit my favorite move, the Carni where you swing that leg over his arm (kinda of like an omaplata) but then you straighten out ur opposite butterfly hook (which stops him from rolling forwards). Great content otherwise, keep it up.
@robrollsАй бұрын
Yo Adam thanks for the feed back! Ill be honest i gotta look up most of what you just said lol! I do need to play more instead of getting in my comfort zone, that is closed guard. I need to take a few weeks and just not focus on triangles haha. Thanks in advance will check out those options
@adameckhoff7970Ай бұрын
@joecrow13 Just because its not common in ADCC doesn't mean you should not consider 10th planet JJ. Also, not everyone is training for ADCC, some people, including myself, just do this as a hobby.
@Knownprodigy23Ай бұрын
Nice of you to pull him into closed guard. I’ve seen so many white belts make that mistake and get their knees caught up under them. It can be brutal and dangerous if you aren’t flexible

Great job, everyone who's competed understands the fatigue that you're talking about, after my first competition match my body was destroyed and it stayed like that for like 3 days, those 5 minutes in comp felt harder than 30 minutes of straight sparring.

@robrollsАй бұрын
Cool thanks brother! Honestly, I was trying to just breathe and relax and stretch but mentally your body knows you’re about to go into a battle with someone new so I felt my heart racing all day! Haha I would say, just don’t forget to breathe in your match and maybe not take it so serious try and be playful like you would in class Easier said than done though, the pace is different. Good luck!

I don't know if it'll help ya..... But at 52...at a very competitive gym, I find I always talk and compliment my opponents lol. I swear when I do that I stay extra chill and never really gas. It distracts my opponents in tournaments....I'm like..." Nice dude!"...and they'll give me that weird side glance and get momentarily distracted. It's just habit now.

ROB DO YOU USE YOUR PHONE TO RECORD?
@robrolls2 ай бұрын
I use either the go pro or iphone! I’d prefer to just use my phone because it’s easy but it doesn’t have as wide a lens as GoPro and if you zoom out with your cell phone, you lose quality! If someone films for me, I just use my cell phone 😅

Hey man, enjoying your content! You should absolutely no way give up your position at 2:00 for that sub attempt. I like to use those grips to set up a cross collar from north-south by pulling my left forearm over the neck whilst moving around to the other side of their body via N-S. they often turn into you to relieve the pressure on the neck, and you sink in your other collar grip, return to N-S, and finish like a regular cross collar. Hope that helps! But yeh definitely don’t lose top position!
