See the Rebuild part 5 video . The absolute value (in degrees) isn't that important - the important thing is that the angle of the diff matches the angle of the engine & box. Diff nose up , gearbox tail down , propshaft level - is what you're aiming for

Nice build. I also noticed that the steering geometry is off. Going to have excessive bump steer unless you relocate the TCA mounting points. Also, I believed that rear wheel drive cars should have toe in. In the escorts manual it also advises up to 6mm of toe in.
@adrianlivesey4375
@adrianlivesey4375 Ай бұрын
Hi, I think you need to look at the cross member, as you are running the car lower, you need to move the inner TCA joint inwards and upwards, currently you have completely messed with the roll centre of the car because the TCA are pointing downwards, it will also allow you to lengthen the TCA back to closer to it's original design length. As per the last video on the I do advise you to look at the raising the gearbox back up again, I fear you will under load have the prop rear diff going above the tail shaft of the gearbox increasing your angles and giving you a nasty vibration from the prop, the angles do not have to be 4 degrees, this is what a factory car was at factory ride height which your car is not
@Cossie.Mk1
@Cossie.Mk1 Ай бұрын
Thanks Adrian - I'm not claiming to be an expert and I really appreciate advice such as yours 👍 Following your advice on the prop angle in your previous comment , I had planned to revisit this the next time the car is up on the blocks. I'll also look at correcting the TCA angles now that I've settled on the ride height I wanted. Thanks again - Lee 👍

Is the angle of the gearbox output compared to the diff input the thing we need to set it at? I’m genuinely interested. I’ve set my diff input at 4 degrees.
@Cossie.Mk1
@Cossie.Mk1 Ай бұрын
The important thing is that the angles are the same . I.e gearbox output is down , and diff nose is up - by the same value. Between 1 - 4 degrees is ideal 👍 . Prop should be level or pointing down slightly from the gearbox.

Thank you Lee. This is full of very useful reminders especially for those us restoring / building from scratch (I do not have a Ford). As you say, the equipment for doing this does not need to cost hundreds of pounds. I will go back through all your videos again, but just as a thought, when you have "finished", could you give feed back on how it shakes down, as suspension and drivetrains are "living things" on the road. An interesting video was done by a 3rd party on a specially built car by Retropower ("Darth Vader Chevette" I think). This was useful as although it was a road car intended for some events, it was rather spoilt IMHO by (avoidable) NVH, even though the quality of work done was magnificent (I'm a great believer in trying to address all issues).
@Cossie.Mk1
@Cossie.Mk1 2 ай бұрын
Thanks Andrew 👍 . There will be more videos in the future and after its finished. After a 7 year build teething troubles will be inevitable in the shakedown period. Hopefully they will be few & far between - all through the build I've tried to pay attention to the most minor of details and 'future proof' the build as much as I can 👍

You also need to account for the angle of the prop, also 4 degrees is a good angle when at standard ride height, with my car at ride height my prop went up to the pinion and this increased the angle and I got bad vibrations, I have had to raise the gearbox as much as I can to counteract this and change the diff angle to suit, mine is now 1.9 degrees, they just have to be the same
@adrianlivesey4375
@adrianlivesey4375 2 ай бұрын
Just to add, 4 degrees is only a setting for the original escort, it does not have to be the de facto setting, def make sure your prop does not go negative IE upwards from the front of the car to the rear
@adrianlivesey4375
@adrianlivesey4375 2 ай бұрын
Also now watching the later part setting up the watts, the lower bar should also be in the same plane as the top bar or they will not move at the same rate over the suspension travel
@Cossie.Mk1
@Cossie.Mk1 2 ай бұрын
Good point - I missed that out on the video. My prop was 1 degree negative (up at the back - same as the body) during the set up - hence my target of 3 degrees 👍
@Cossie.Mk1
@Cossie.Mk1 2 ай бұрын
Good spot , thanks Adrian. I'd actually run out of adjustment on the lower bar . I cant shorten it anymore but am getting a new threaded plug turned up so's I can weld it in and make the bar shorter and correct the plane.

Crickey Lee, 80psi? I thought 45-50psi was considered good! ( will you leave the relief valve at that setting and is there any downside to such a high pressure?) 🤔
@Cossie.Mk1
@Cossie.Mk1 2 ай бұрын
It settles down to 40-50psi at idle when the engines up to temp. After running in , I'll change to a lower viscosity synthetic oil and the cold oil pressures won't be so extreme. Lots of YB race motors run these uprated relief springs. A potential downside to high oil pressure is increased risk of leaks , but I've had none 👍

Hello Lee, (probably because my second-ever car was a Mk1 bubble Arch 1600 x-flow back in 1973) the Mk1 s are my absolute favourite looking Escort. Mine was originally a modified 1300GT in lime green with a Lotus green side stripe but otherwise a fairly basic conversion. Your car ( along with Craig’s) in my humble opinion, are probably currently the very best and most beautiful Mk1s in the whole of the U.K. -Bless you mate and thanks for sharing your joy with us! 🙏
