I find this song so very uplifting, the mis en scene was used so perfectly in this scene, with the table full of food that he barley touches, wasting all the energy and effort she put into the meal, and the fact that he wants her to clean up before she even starts shows the point of where she decides to leave him was put so eloquently, this is my favourite music video, and I would love to analyse it for an assessment.

before the pomegranate scene, we see scenes of the dining table having been messed up, like grapes falling out of the fruit plate, a random piece of meat in the salad,... symbolizing the husband sabotaging all her efforts to be a good caretaker, a good wife. when she finally sees this, it was the last straw for her and caused her to rebel. i also liked other theories in the comment section about the candles from both sides and the pomegranate. this is such a well executed story

“Emotional torture”…I’m so happy it was put into words. Abuse is not just fists flying and plates smashing. It’s invalidation. It’s stress. It’s accusations. It’s manipulation. It’s silence. It’s repetition of the same harsh words over and over and over again. I’ve dealt with so much stress from relationships where they take out their incompetence and insecurities on me, because I was their “nurse”. I was their “mother”. Sometimes I felt I was going crazy from it…somehow I always found the strength to leave, but it’s taken its toll on me. I no longer recognize myself sometimes. They’re gone, but the memories and residual stress are still there. My favourite book quote of all time is this: “Heed my words, daughter, if you ever mean to be happy: never give yourself to a man.” “No, Mama, I never will.” (Pope Joan)

This song is so needed in this time when "tradwife" culture is trying to make a resurgence. The reality is awful and terrifying.

This isnt about abusive relationships: its just about relationships - and how much men require the unpaid labour of women to "have it all", while taking it for granted, even devaluing it as "not real work". Trust me, the Empire (patriarchy) is striking back now and trying to villianize feminism and shame women back into "trad wife" roles which serve male interests, usually at the expense of women's. It needs to be fought hard or it'll be the Hamdmaids Tale for your daughters.

Fun fact: as a german I belived it was only happenig in movies that men would punch throught walls. Cause you dont do that in germany unless you wanna break your wrist and fingers. (No dry walls the thinnest walls are at least 20 ish cm thick and made from brick concrete and or steel.)

I love how, if you don't look too closely at the video and don't listen too closely to the lyrics, this song + video actually seem quite idyllic, but its only when you look closely you see what's going on under the surface, just like with real abuse situations

All day, every day, therapist, mother, maid Nymph, then a virgin, nurse, then a servant Just an appendage, live to attend him So that he never lifts a finger 24/7 baby machine So he can live out his picket fence dreams It's not an act of love if you make her You make me do too much labour
