4:09 As a Russian (yeah, blame me for it), when I see that YUKOS livery I remember how YUKOS, a Russian oil company, ended up when its owner, Mikhail Khodorkovsky was arguing with Putin himself in 2005-6 or so, the result was Khodorkovsky's imprisonment and all YUKOS belongings like oil/gas fields and refineries being nationalized as part of ROSNEFT. And yeah, some Russian entrepreneur and future Marussia (both car manufacturer and F1 team) founder Nikolai Fomenko raced for them in ILMS and Le Mans. Well, I think he somehow managed to buy Manor/Virgin from Richard Branson. I had a poster with him on a wall! But with some other racecar.

Heck, I did a track day at Mid Ohio and I got beached in the T1 gravel trap. Because drivers respect the flags, I was recovered on a live track and was able to continue.

I'm playing through Forza Motorsport (the original) and seeing that 2003 Porsche, having received it as a prize car earlier today, is kinda wild. Edit: Nevermind, that was the 2000 Porsche, and the wrong team of that year, but for subsequent years, the livery is correct at least.

I saw Lucas Luhr racing for Freisinger a few times back in the day. They were the dominant Porsche team for quite a while, loved the Yukos livery, but those 993 GT2 RSR’s with the teeth were iconic. I would add that his rival at Freisinger Stephane Ortelli is probably an even more underrated driver, probably the fastest Porsche driver at the time, up there with the best of endurance racing in that era, could be worth doing an episode on him as barely anyone has ever heard of him

While I am hesitant about Thermal being a points race for Indycar, I do think that it will fix one if the main problems we saw, being the tire allotment rules. Cause it turns out if you make terrible tires, drivers just drive slower to make them last. Hopefully a full length race will correct that problem. Still not excited about the physical nature of the track, nor the lack of access for race fans.

That's true, it might help a little. The format did it absolutely no favours. The other negatives remain, so it's hard to look forward to it

I was at Mosport/CTMP during the ALMS weekend at 2013, had a brief chat with Luhr and Graf. Not the largest ALMS grid that year - last season before unification - but still great competition and the atmosphere in Canada was something to remember. Muscle Milk HPD livery is still one my all time favourites

"It's now or never, for Lucas Luhr, and it's now!" If you ask me, the last couple laps at Road America in 2012 have some of the best commentator calls in racing. But you should've also mentioned that he was 4 laps down at one point and made those all back up in spectacular fashion, just missing out on the win

I remember the whole iron force by ring police debacle. Slooten gained popularity through his appearances on jp performances KZbin channel, being buddy buddy with its owner and seeming like a really cool dude. Iron force had a huge hype because of all the jp fans. Lucas co driving was just the cherry on top, it sounded perfect. And then, slowly but steadily it all fell apart and the crew got more and more disillusioned. It wasn’t growing pains of a new team, the just could not keep up. A Top 20 result was a huge success then. I really felt for Lucas because he seemed increasingly frustrated by the effort. It was a bit of a shitshow, even omitting the allegedly shady business practices of slooten. I will always remember him for driving the gtr alongside krumm. Two of my favourite drivers in an absolute beast of a car

Luhr was terrific, but I loved that whole Porsche Junior corps. Sascha Maasen, Jorg Bergmeister, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, Patrick Long, Marc Lieb, Mike Rockenfeller. They just felt like a true wrecking crew.

I really hope Toby Sowery gets a seat next season, especially if it's for Coyne. He proved himself this year, and drivers that from IndyCar's development ladder like Sowery should be rewarded when they show out like he did in 2024.

i dont like shane van Gisbergen but can you talk about how crazy it was that a guy who races v8 supercars was able to come over here in his first nascar cup series start on a street course that he hadnt seen and the other drivers hadnt seen (it was the first chicago street race) and actaully managed to beat every single nascar driver in the field to win his first cup start

Luhr being the most decorated driver in ALMS history with success in multiple categories was something that was talked about when the ALMS was still around, but not so much sense then. I forgot about his IndyCar start, and I don't even think I ever heard about his arrest until now. As far as scandals go, drunkenly taking a piss in public is pretty forgivable, I guess, but still, indecent exposure probably means he's on a sex offender registry somewhere, which is kind of funny to think about.

Tbf tho, there was literally only 2 teams/cars contesting the 2013 alms p1 championship. So 1st doesnt really mean that much lol. Normally 2nd would be good but in that case, dyson finished 2nd and last lol.

Your pronounciation of "Mühlheim-Kärlich" wasn't too bad actually. Only the "ä" is pronounced more like "ae" but other than that, pretty solid for someone who doesn't speak German.

Lucas Luhr is indeed the last German national to race in Indycar as of today. Quite the oddball, considereing there's a lot of talented Germans who either don't have the budget for F1 or had their Formula One career fizzle out unceremoniously, who could easily be an Indycar star. I'm talking about Nick Heidfeld, Max Günther, Pascal Wehrlein, Adrian Sutil, Mick Schumacher, Tim Tramnitz and plenty more.

I just don’t think there’s the enthusiasm for indy car in Europe that there is in the US. For most drivers the aspirations are F1, endurance racing or touring cars. Don’t hate it but it’s not really my thing either, so I can understand why so many this side of the Atlantic don’t make the jump.

Another interesting stat: Lucas Luhr is, tied with Allan McNish, the driver who's won the most races ever in an LMP1 car, with 24 (counting from 2004, where the most long standing version of LMP1 was introduced to replace LMP900).

I met Lucas at the 2013 running of the Baltimore GP while he was competing for Muscle Milk Pickett Racing. Really nice guy, signed the helmet I brought along with me that weekend. They wrapped up the championship that weekend too. They got extremely lucky that the opening lap mega crash happened behind them. Was a very chaotic race to say the least. Lucas' stint in the car won them the race from essentially the back of the pack since they pitted under a caution that nobody else went in for. Very memorable hour of green flag racing.

Thanks to watching the ALMS in the 2010's I'll never forget Lucas. I remember him as a such a solid driver and good in all areas it seemed. Him and Klaus Graf in that Muscle Milk Pickett Racing HPD LMP1 car, so good. That being said, I hardly knew anything of Lucas' racing career before then. So that's cool to see! Great vid!
