After my first Novice license expired in 1971 and I failed my first General theory exam, CB kept my radio flames burning for the next 6-7 years until I finally passed my second Novice exam, then the General, and later the Advanced. I learned my first lessons about homebrewing antennas while "only" a CB operator from some antenna books published by ARRL. Built an 11 meter vertical dipole in 1978 to talk to a friend some 20 miles away across Lake Minnetonka near Minneapolis in the dead of winter using only 4w AM. We worked together to build identical antennas to see if we could hear each other that far away. Like you said, 11m is between 10m and 12m and it's all radio, all experimentation, all fun! You can find good operators and bad on ALL the bands from DC to daylight. Keep doing you, Walt! 73, Paul - N4FTD

I am so glad you are doing these videos on the 11-meter band. We really need to join CB and amateur radio. It's sad that all these old sad hams have to put CB down. I'm an old dude and have an extra class license and wouldn't have gotten this far, radio-wise, if it were not for CB radio. It gives people a taste of radio and often propels them towards ham radio. I had no idea about the FCC changes. I am so glad they did that since being able to take advantage of skips lets the CB radio person experience a small taste of DXing. I love CB! I’ve been messing with them for about 2 years now. I think it’s pretty cool that my 1974 JCPenney CB is compatible with my 2023 President CB. I hear quite a bit of chatter just about any time I’m out driving around, and I’ve noticed more and more vehicles (primarily pickups) with CB antennas on them. The longest contact I’ve made to date was in WV. I was chatting with 2 other guys that were 63 miles away. I was only transmitting with 4 watts, but I was way up on top of a mountain.

Great fun Walt. The FCC also changed CB to allow FM as well. I got on after 4PM with my new 4:1 UNUN . works the same but handels much more power and covers 1 to 54 MHZ. I just a 25FT vertical with 17FT ground plain . fold back end of wire like 4 to 6 in and tunes 10/11/12 with no tuner under 1.4 :1 . Lots of Jamaica and some Texas than California came in great , Also Los Vegas NV. UNUN stayed cool . no heat at all. 500 Watts PEP SSB. My outher 4:1 only rated about 100-150 watts. PEP. and the toroide is for 3 to 30 MHZ. But 10/11/12 worked the same. great RX ! SWR stayed low . 73

I actually started on CB back in Britain in the '80s and always meant to pursue ham there eventually, but the timing was never quite right back then and other interests distrated me. Finally got my license here a few months ago of course, but one thing that occurs to me about switching to CB after doing a lot of ham is getting the terms mixed up between them! I sometimes struggle to remember not to call CQ or say "over" on VHF/UHF after being on HF as it is. 😁 That did look fun though. I guess Channel 6 over here is the equivalent of 7.200 on 40M then. Sad, but avoidable thankfully. Enjoyed this little experiment. Thanks! Les.

The European version of this radio is very popular here in the UK. It's the same power output. The only difference is you can go into the settings and select the correct bands for each country. The CEPT band is the same as the FCC channels and is legal in every European country, but before that came in each country had their own channel allocation. In the UK the president George has two banks of 40 channels with FM only on the old UK channels, multi mode on the CEPT.

Thanks for the video. I am a ham and also have a GMRS license and when my wife and I travel I hardly hear anything on 146.52 or GMRS. Question is it worth getting a CB for travel?
@COASTALWAVESWIRES3 ай бұрын
I think a CB for travel is great and think it's worth it. 73, Walt

When the sunspots diminish in a few years we can encourage CBers to get licensed as hams to allow them to come down to the bands that will still work. 😁

Great video, Walt. Quick question (I've never operated CB). Why were you calling out "040" when you were on 38? Just curious. Like I said I've never operated on 11M before. Good stuff!

Would like to build something along these lines myself. You think 49:1 unun would be enough? Also, what site did you use for antenna lengths? Thanks for the video!
@COASTALWAVESWIRES3 ай бұрын
I use an app on my phone called “Antenna Tool” for the lengths. 49:1 might work but you’re probably going to have to trim the wire until you get a good enough match. I use a cheap 64:1 I found on Amazon

WOW.. 64:1.. Was the driven element ohms that high? or is the radio expecting a feed less than 50ohms? I watched your video on when to use 4:1 or 9:1 unun. I would have guessed a 4:1 unun for this antenna based on your diagram and thought I had it all figured out.. I am a little confused now. Why a 64:1?
@COASTALWAVESWIRES3 ай бұрын
Wire that is cut to an exact half wavelength of a particular band has a very high feedpoint impedance. That's why a traditional End Fed Half Wave uses a 49:1 unun. At 10,11 and 12 meters it's even higher, thus a 64:1. In general 4:1 and 9:1 ununs are for non resonant antennas and are not on that resonant halfwave spot that has that high impedance.

I haven’t done cb since about 1976 and only AM. I hear some totally unfamiliar terms and more ham radio like Q- signals than I remember. Perhaps a video on how to operate. Is the trucker with an IQ of 95 stereotype still prevalent? Do you develop a southern accent? Do you have Good Buddies? 10-codes? 73, Gil

On channel 19, it has not changed much. No drawl required. If you want o put on and Alberta drawl, go for it. :)
@COASTALWAVESWIRES3 ай бұрын
Good Buddy is actually a derogatory term now. People in the SSB skip world don't use 10 codes either. It's more like ham radio with Q codes.
