I have to say it really depends on the person’s skill level. If you’re taking a project like this, maybe you can stitch one pattern per day? I did this over a few days for the videos but I’d rather take more time when I stitch for myself. Enjoy your trip and stitching💕💕

Americans throw too much away. I like making old things have new purpose. Old shirts are a favorite. I have a jar full of buttons and hemmed rags that used to be cotton shirts. I love how soft things become with age. I sew while watching videos. Always something to do. No waste of time.

I just started doing this! I didn't know it was a traditional Japanese craft. But it makes sense that it's been used in many cultures. I also didn't think to turn it inside out for nice edges. So pretty!
@thegreenwrapper
@thegreenwrapper 12 сағат бұрын
You can make it in the way best suits you👍 You don’t always have the seam allowance either. Especially the material is already thick, it’s more practical to just wrap around with a whip stitch without folding the raw edge inside😊 For me, it’s much quicker to do a running stitch than a whip stitch and it looks a bit neater so I often do this way.

Thank you for trying this with chalk. This what my mom taught me to use and I wondered if it would wear off before the stitching was done. I haven't watched to the end to see if it holds up or if it affects the needle yet though.

Since I started sharing some ideas for repurposing fabrics and mending clothes, I found that there are many people who own some materials (including threads) with special memories. I heard many beautiful ideas for repurposing those items and the process of sewing, stitching and mending itself seems to provide us an opportunity to connect with those special memories and special people. Thank you for watching this video💕💕

I would think that because a lot of hand quilting is done in a hoop, you could disregard the recommendation on the package, "best for hand quilting", and use the batting that works best for you. The wool/plastic mix will be best for cold weather and the cotton for year round. Also, I've learned that perfectly flat doesn't exist in quilting. In fact the puckering that comes from shrinkage differences between batting and cloth can cover a multitude of problems. In theory, this can be used as a textural plus in some patterns.
@thegreenwrapper
@thegreenwrapper Күн бұрын
Oh thank you so much for your insight. It’s very informative💕💕 As I don’t have any knowledge about quilting with batting, I simply relied on the information on packaging and some websites but ‘use what best for you’ really makes sense to me😊 Since I tried this, I’ve been thinking that Sashiko is probably meant to be (and has been) for quilting just with layers of fabric and that’s probably best material for Sashiko. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge!
@mala3isity
@mala3isity 21 сағат бұрын
@@thegreenwrapper My pleasure and happy to help. I encourage your trials with batting. Why abandon the idea if you can make quilted outer clothes that reflect your love and skill? Yes, it'll take practice but you know that. Maybe it won't be sashiko in the way you're used to but more an evolution. Imagine a quilted jacket embellished with your work passed down to your daughter's daughter. Maybe it's just the sleeve cuffs or a yoke or a quilted part on another jacket.

I always appreciate all the helpful hints you show every time you do a project because it helps "burn'' it into my brain. One of the things I sometimes struggle with is the direction of sewing some of the more intricate patterns, like the tortoise shell which I am working on now. I know it is about saving thread but it seems that oftentimes it leaves large loops on the back. Should I be stitching/passing them between the two layers?
@thegreenwrapper
@thegreenwrapper Күн бұрын
All the Kikkou (tortoise shell) patterns are tricky and I always struggle as well😅 Some of them don’t seem to have any shortcuts. If it’s not too hard to run the thread between the layers, maybe that’s the easiest way? Some books suggest to stitch one hexagon at a time and cut thread often (which I’ve done once to stitch on a furoshiki and took forever). Have you watched this one? I tried to figure out different ways of stitching some Kikkou pattern⬇️ How do you stitch these Kikkou (hexagon) patterns with Sashiko? I've found some hand towels that have a nice design on them (which is not that easy to find in Australia- all our towels and linen seem to be a bit plain). The only problem is that these patterned hand towels are a bit too thin for regular use. I thought I'd use my tattered- but really good quality- old hand towels to attach to the back of the prettier towels. I was going to do this by machine but I think 'sashiko' now offers me some good choices to level-up the designs! Thank you for sharing your talents!
