Hey, thanks for the video. That's what I was looking for. However, do you think you could do some kind of a follow up where you go into some details of builds that work? Which weapons to use (if not obvious), which utility skills, how to specialize, and maybe also how to actually properly play it and pull it off. I do know your older healer video where I believe you went a little more into detail at least. Thanks a lot!

Interesting that you guys didn't like Necromancer. My favorites list was Engineer, Necromancer, and Mesmer - in no particular order. I didn't like Elementalist - the 5 key effect is just too big. I agree Revenant felt so slow I could have tabbed out to file my taxes between casts. Ranger stealth - I never got this to work right so didn't "get it". Thief was fun, and I will be checking it out more. I really want to like warrior because that's where they put GW1 Paragon - but I worry I will find it as 'unrelatable' as I did Paragon back in the day (Paragon is the only GW1 class I never finished the game on but I was never able to figure out just why I didn't like it). Guardian left no mental impression with me - I can't even remember what it was like playing it. I didn't play any of these with their suggested specs. I changed them to my preferred elite specs and tried them there. For some I tried them both. Necromancer on Harbringer and Mesmer on Virtuoso. Engineer I forget which is odd given how I liked it - maybe that one I stuck with it's default, I certainly didn't do mechanist because that robot is too big. Warrior on spellbreaker and bladesworn. Guardian... ok I do remember doing this one on dragonhunter. Ranger on Soulbeast because if I could delete the pet permanently I would. Revanant didn't matter - with 5-minute long cast times what does spec matter if the game servers have already been shut down because 2070 has arrived before you finish your animation.

Found this, enjoyed and had to sub. Had a break from GW2 for a while (hit by car and cracked my noggin) but back, all-be-it a bit slower, but managing. It’s my escape from reality. Came back to new weapon options which I’m getting round, and now Spears!!! Maybe controversial, but I wish Spears were a 3rd weapon. Like some quests get you to kill ‘X’ with ‘Y’ but you still have option of our own weapons. Not long ago people had to craft, quest or pay for new weapons, now we are doing it again. Just too much too soon. Love my Reaper and Chrono, tried Spear Beta and totally agree with everything said. Reaper needs more and Condi is meh! Just my crazy cracked noggin thinking. Great work tho.

Hi hello, your GW2 Spear Tier List video popped up as a suggested video. This lead me to your Twitch so I started watching a few past streams. I previous played GW2 up until the release of End of Dragons. So I'm a few xpacs behind, but looking to jump back in. I only have a 80 Ele, but your streams got me interested in starting/making a Guardian. Even with the newest xpac coming out shortly would you recommend playing through Guard from level 1? or use my boost to 80 for it? My apologies for the massive wall of text, but curious as to what you might suggest. Anyway I look forward to watching some of your older YT videos as well as trying to catch your stream. Cheers! 💜

I love GW2, but in my oppinion none of the profession capture the essence of a spear (except maybe guardian with the cone of light). All these weapons feel like javelines or greatswords, I don't want to slash my ennemies I want to pierce them...

As a Guardian main I didn't like the illuminated skills. The mechanic itself was a low tier design when compared to what other profession have gotten. Same with Warrior and Revenant. The spear design of heavy profession's spear skills felt lackluster. But I main Guardian so that's what I will focus on. In terms of regular skills if there was no seconary mechanic I would rate the kit 5/5. There is a cone AoE auto attack, movement skill, melee cleave attack, ranged attack and symbol with CC and weakness application. The illumination mechanic I rate 1/5. The only good and fun illuminated skill is Symbol of Luminance. The rest is just bad and unimaginitive. For example Illuminated Helio Rush heals allies by 10% more. Illuminated Gleaming Disc just adds blind and Illuminated Solar Storm can't even benefit from increased instances of damage because there is a hit cap. The mechanic could not exist and it wouldn't change much. Illuminated skills are weak and boring. Average score: 3/5. Definitely in the lowest tier in terms of its current design together with Warrior and Revenant.

I liked the ele spear effects, and the etching idea is cool, but I'm not sure the 'meh' feeling it gave me was just because of the lack of damage. Maybe cos it has pretty moderate AoE as well. I went with Cata because summoning the jade sphere procs the etching, so that, plus the three skill, plus casting anything else at all would power up the haboob or whatever more or less immediately, so I didn't particularly feel the etchings were too short. I was kinda struggling to make any of the cata traits actually work with it though. The weaver skill three seemed interesting... but then having all the weaver skills more or less just allowing you to unweave and double attune sort of negates the whole point of that spec a bit. I do kind of want to have some dual _attacks_ in there. Not sure about Tempest, but Tempest is sort of weird with all weapons just by its very nature. I reckon one (or even two) of the other etching spells need to have a bit more damage potential, cos volcano can't do it all on its own. Fulgor (air2) is weird cos it doesn't crit at all... I think in general ele feels most fun when there is a sprinkling of good damaging spells across all the attunements. I find this whole "fire is the damage one" design pretty uninspiring, so I am kinda hoping they make the ice beam on water 2 do some truly brutal damage or something :D And make haboob some epic pulsing AoE cloud of damage - put earth in the power damage rotation for a weapon that isnt hammer. Thief spear was also cool, but it was totally busted on deadeye and I think the optimal damage rotation was more or less spam 2 and occassionally 4, so I'm not sure they quite accomplished what they aimed to do with the weapon. I guess that's perhaps mostly a deadeye problem, and not a problem with the spear itself though. Very much agree with what was said about Necro. Condi or at least hybrid (I guess if you are a condi reaper it will do bleeds...) would have been better imo. Rev spear also felt pretty weak. I thought the idea was to spam 5 as much as possible, then once you are out of charges/ways to recoup charges you switch weapons for the free extra attack at 5 stacks, rather than trying to maintain 5 stacks and camping spear. I think if the idea is that you want to maintain 5 stacks indefinitely then they need to last long enough to allow for a weapon switch, because it seems totally insane to me to design a weapon that requires you to camp it.

You mention how necro spear has no place as a power weapon. Cool. But you are not mentioning that spear for thief mainly favors deadeye. Try to apply the same logic as for your rating for necro spear. Daredevil and Specter has 1 to 2 weapon sets, whereas Deadeye is superior on almost any other weapon. Thief spear on its own is a solid S, Thief spear in regard to fitting specs, is a B at best.

Heh? Your reasoning is quite a leap, and has nothing to do with the purity of the topic. We are discussing these weapons in their own execution, and how they compare to other weapons which have been recently introduced. Not with how they fit into any elite specs, per se. Also we didn’t say it has NO place, but that it doesn’t offer anything *new.* It in fact probably has a very strong place as a power weapon. But, was that something we *wanted* mmm maybe not?

Ranger spear simply doesnt feel good to use,half its kit would be locked behind stealth,and if u auto while in stealth...even so 0boons,close to 0 good pve related debuffs also hurts,lets not speak abt the numbers being so low 1 skill from axe/axe outdpses its entire skill kit.So a weapon thats hard to use,only has niche use in pvp,low dmg numbers,for now its clearly not rdy as it lacks benefits other spear classes may hv.Also if u lets say start auto atk animation cuz u gotta dodge,ur auto will not hit thus u waste time on that animation for no benefit.Overall that needs something to make it worth taking in the new raids or else there may be ppl who just wont get the expansion.

I'm genuinely shocked Guard spear ranking that high. I would've thought it should be in D tier at most generosity. Design philosophy is unclear. In Qh, dps, cdps, adps, can anet tell us, which of those builds spear will fall under and compete with what in existing choices? Healing attacks will suffer the curse of low dps, so it wont fall into anything that mentions dps. It lacks multi hit ability to be effective in adps and cdps. Its heal is lackluster to compete w staff/mace+shield. Not to mention spear 2 is highly awkward n disruptive, spear 4 only hits 3 out of 5 on stationary target. Illumination mechanic is rather tame.A symbol at too high CD to have any good uptime for related traits. Forum feedbacks overwhelming reiterate the above points. Yes, it's an A tier for role play because of its visual. But i doubt that's video's intention and metrics. With that level of shortcomings and still managed a A tier , i wish i got that much bonus credits in my calculus exam.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts on the spear for each class, I'm glad the Thief is lookin good! What's really turning me off from the spear is how the weird hunched forward pose looks really unbalanced. When you attack with it it just doesn't look like it would be an effective stance for a solid attack. There are so many cool poses they could have gone for for the default stance on these. Hopefully enough people other than me can give Anet the same feedback and get them to make it look better. They may have even addressed this already, but I'm not sure

No, I disagree. Girl? Girl. No thank you. As a life long ele main, we deserve to shine more than any other class in the game, if this was an orchesta, ele would be the monster pipe organ with pedals and 3 racks of keys playing a vivaldi concert and still be considered mediocre while SOME OTHER CLASSES only deign to hit the triangle and get a standing ovation Really, we are playing a piano to get a miserable 20~25k dps while other class can put a sticker on the keyboard to keep the skill 1 pressed and go on a smoke break while doing 35k dps afk. I know, this is just the beta, and this is mostly me venting but holy shit was i let down... I mean, we already have to juggle 20 skills just by equipping a weapon, 25 if u count utility slots and even more if u have any glyph or stance, do we really need to have 3 separate skills on our weapon 5 AND take the time and effort to load it to it's full potential? Weaver's main mechanic feels so useless, etchings on tempest make absolutely no sense, even cata's spheres kinda feel wrong cuz they're thought for melee combat and spear skills are blast finishers and not projectile??? Dear lord i thought anet hated us but boi was i wrong... Get it together anet. This is not glass cannon, this is just glass.

Not a bad list, and I like hearing what resonates with other players. Instead of a tier list, I ranked them with reasons for their placement and what they need to advance higher. 1. Thief: Very fun mixing combo chains. The weapon has a lot of tools, and mobility is amazing. The full package. Needs visual cues on the field of play for tracking steps in the chain skills. 2. Ranger: Also has a great mix of tools, and the stealth mechanics are wonderful. Not quite as fast or fluid as thief. 3. Mesmer: Great concept and beautiful skills. I agree clarity effects and graphics need to be enhanced. Also needs a better visual cue for when you have clarity (the little ball was hard to see). Biggest issue is that clarity was difficult to land on mobile enemies, and skills #4 and #5 feel clunky when trying to combo into #2. 4. Elementalist: Fun ranged gameplay, with awesome visuals. Etchings were too short. Felt like too much glass and not enough cannon. Etchings, while beautiful, need less opaque backgrounds; they hide mechanics. 5: Guardian: Another great concept. Fun skills with good damage and some support. #4 looks great! Desperately needs self-sustain on the kit. Lower CDs for #4 and #5. Helio Crawl is too slow. Illuminated skills could use a bit more effects and graphics. 6: Warrior: Nice, clean weapon, with purposeful skills and no gimmicks or mini game. YAY! Good heft that can do mid-range kiting or closer AOE in one kit. Needs better tracking and less animation locks. Could use some boons and lower CDs on #3 and #5. 7: Revenant: Big, slow, bruiser weapon. Graphics look great and the weapon feels like it's dropping massive bombs on foes. But it needs to be a bit faster, and animations need fined tuning so they look more like building power than moving in slomo. Not sold on the main mechanic of spamming #5. Maybe if had a more pronounced effect? I didn't play necro or engi enough to get a good feel for them. The others were all fun!

Here's my thoughts about the new spears: Warrior: feels nice when playing, but needs more loving. Maybe if this weapon could generate boons and be used more like a support dps, different from the staff. And it would be nice to give us the ability to cast that wind disengage abilities in any direction without a target, with larger range would be very nice. Revenant: seems kinda off and too slow. Also, it really needs more options for condi dmg, like the bleeding they told. Guardian: visuals are great, but... I dunno, didn't scratch the itch for me Rangers: should be above the guardian's spear, but I kinda wish we had some type of weapon like the staff for necros. We dont hace that kinda of weapon. Also, kinda of wish a new ranged weapon. Engineer: it's sick!!! Thief: sicker!!!! This weapon is spot on and brings more value from rotation intead of spammings, which is hella boring. Necro: i also think it shoul be some kind of condi/support. I was thinking about some kind of weapon that heals and gives allies boons stealing from the enemies, with a little bit of condi dmg. That would be sick! Mesmer: it's nice, but something is missing. Mermers don't have much melee weapons, but the ranged ones gives more value both to damage and considering mesmers are a very mobile class. Elementalists: activating skill five is very frustrating because most of the time the circle vanishes before i can activate it. Also, something seems off (dunno what) even with the amazing visuals.

the most resent(?) patch is overshadowing the Spears for me ... Why? HoT's Power Fresh Tempest is back ❤ you run Scepter/Horn with Water Traits which is so stupid. All you do is overload Air and tip Water 23 or Fire 32 based on cooldowns WITHOUT any conjured weapons 🤤 it is now rather simple build to play and really strong.

I hope they keep adding more weapons even if they step on toes of others. Great Axe, Wrist weapons (like knuckle and hidden blade), Halpert, Rapier, Parrying Dagger and Crossbows to name some. They choose to only focus on Spear :<

S: Thief, Ele, Mesmer A: Necro, Engi, Ranger B: Guardian C: Warrior D: Rev I liked Necro even though it's pretty much a GS variant. Mesmer has the coolest animations, Ele has incredible power fantasy, Thief feels super versatile, Ranger is just cool, Guardian is cool too, Engi feels substantial, Warrior is boring, revenant is slow and underwhelming.

I would say that the Ranger spear is seriously stepping on the toes of the greatsword. They are so similar weapons when you think about it. Both have combo in skill 1 in melee, a large hard hitting cleave at 2, a leap, a stun and a defensive skill + somekind of control. The differences are that spear has some range and with greatsword you do the 2 + 5 + 2 combo for damage when with this spear you do 2 + 3 (stealth version for added benefit). They are too similar in behavior and in some sense visually too. Also You are actively choosing to be less effective at ranged at the moment with the weapon which is stupid. As skill 1 is a lesser version of the melee combo and skill 2 you can not even use at ranged. Yes this is beta but just saying that spear has several issues. And some of those are also the following: * Stealth is easily lost in melee with autoattack. * using skills will make you lose stealth even if you do not hit anyone, * leap does not do damage consistently, * the weapon does not have enough effects to control the enemy (getting from ranged to melee and "finish off the enemy"). Someone else did a good video about the weapon and it's problems. Yes spear has the range and the stealth is nice. The roleplay of a hunter is there so to say. But with this version of the spear, you really should be just in melee for being effective. But then why not just use greatsword. Note: Spears damage should be lower than greatsword as otherwise you would not use greatsword at all. (Unless you go for both but that feels "meh" when they are so similar weapons.) The weapon, as of now, lacks purpose and identity in the "why use it" category. It is not unique enough to justify proper use. Can you use it for fun: sure. I do such things constantly. But a new weapon should have a proper place too. I like the idea of spear but to me they should make the range part more important: * skill 1 at range should have a combo like melee version, boons or other pressure aspects. * Skill 2 should be a range aoe attack instead of that 170 melee range. You would thus have the whole kit available at ranged. * Then with the stealth you would have 2 range versions and 2 melee versions of these skills. -> So that it would be like it was adverstised in the start (pressure at range and finish the enemy at melee with a surprise hard hitting attack). * Weapon would then also feel different from shortbow, longbow and axe. -> As spear would be a more agile movement + control based pure damage weapon at ranged with the in and out of melee movement.

Idk I feel like it has enough of a differentiation from GS to still go down this path. Stealth could definitely be more reliable, but I don’t think it’s really stepping on GS toes. If it’s just do to the type of damage it’s doing then every class should just get 3 weapons.

@@KROOF Each weapon in the Rangers arsenal has it's place and unique flow. The spear can definitely be fun to use and find its use case too. I just think that the current design is slightly flawed and is stepping on greatsword territory too much. We could have a very unique weapon here but this feels like greatsword 2.0. with elements from longbow. You can use all skills in melee and you have better dmg in there. The range side (with less skills) becomes then questionable. Why would I use it at range. Why use it after the initial new weapon feel. What makes it better and in what use case. Why would I not use greatsword, longbow etc. etc. Spear sounded interesting initially but this version is just a bit off. And too much of what we already had in a way. A few changes though could make it stand on its own really well.

The ele spear in anything but pve is garbage. it does no damage and has zero ability for mobility or survivability. you being locked into the 5 skill areas makes you a massive target and doesnt allow you to move, which in anything but pve suuccckkksss. the only damage on the kit is in fire, none of the others do annyyy damage like at all. why do all these ele skills haave an aditional smaller radius when no other class is forced into this extra skill gap, when they are impossible to hit outside of standing still pve targets. The weaver skills are garbage. the spear just doesnt work with any of the elite specs. and the visual clutter of the spears are horrible, makes it soo hard to see anything else. also the spear skills are very slow, way too slow. The ele spear needs a lot of work, even for pve but especially in any other gamemode. im tierd of every weapon being only for pve, give us other gamemode enjoyers some love please anet. ele spear: C-D tierlist for me

I love the idea of Spears as a power weapon for Ele, but it made me wish that Tempest's overloads were either also ranged or had an expanded radius to match. I originally wanted to run Fresh Air but the Air Overload is of course melee and the Air spear skills have too long of cooldowns. The only way to play like this is if I wanted to forgo range entirely, at which point there are better options for melee.

Yeah well that’s how overloads innately are. I too have thought of ranged overloads, but that could also be tricky to implement. Running with Catalyst allows you to be more at range.

Which hey… those are game modes… and open world spear was an enjoyable fun time. I wasn’t playing any of these in CERUS CM runs, so I was taking them more slowly. But I do agree with the points to the clumsiness of stealth effects.

Revenant weapon was too slow for my liking, the raze skill has a great start, but needs a bit more tuning. I would need to spam the 3 charges of raze to make it worthwhile. I'd like to see the other skills contribute to the duration, OR have the raze be an upkeep cost of -1 to maintain the field. My favorite part of the kit was the flexible autoattack ranges. Necro spear was my personal favorite of the 9. Elementalist was my least favorite. I know hey needed a good longrange option, but I found myself really wanting to switch to a more capable melee weapon for when things got into my face. without having the option of swapping out, spear is hard to justify. If they gave it the flexible melee/ranged option of gunsaber or revenant spear on the autoattack, it would be an autotake.

As scrapper, I loved spear. It shreds. Yes, it needs a little boost to dmg, and some of the animations felt buggy at times but A tier. It's really good, it's a more aggressive hammer. I loved having explosive entrance ready and dropping my floating spear on my focused target. Thief I'd honestly still say A tier, it feels good, but in PvP really good players can avoid the combos and that resets them, it feels s tier for pve.

From the perspective of a group PvE player who's mostly judging these on "feel" more than #'s since they can change on the time: S: Ele, Mesmer, Ranger, Thief A: Guardian, Engi, Necro, Rev B: Warrior Agree with most of the general sentiment. I think I like Rev and Necro a lot more because while I agree they don't really bring something brand new to the table, they just feel and look good. Warrior is a tough one as well. They have SO many weapons, its difficult to really mix it up at this point. SUPER impressed with Spears. That Warrior is hands down my least favorite and its still FAR from something I dislike is a huge compliment to the design team. Impressed with the vid too! Would love to see you bring on your friends for more of this "Tier List" content. I'm a simple creature. Give me Tier Lists. RANK THINGS.

For me, ele is one of the worst. Out of spell effects its clunky and brings even more skills for ele… why? Also its boring, you just use 5 and then spam skills to get second 5 skill. In open world it was terrible. Also skill 5 forced ele to stay in one place, and this is main mechanics so you suppose to stand still a lot.

I'm usually not very superficial when it comes to game visuals... However, I have been on and off GW2 for years now, I was so enticed at the start that I immediately bought the first 2 expansions. However I really have a problem keeping the game going for 2 major reasons. The first one is the UI problem, I'm not going to lie coming from Wow, GW2 UI is sooo horribly cluttered that very often I just can't be bothered to even look at it. On top of that all of these buffs just make me feel like I have no idea what's going on all the time, and the Enemy health bar and nameplates before you click them as sooo stupidly hard to see, that it makes it a chore to play. The second and my BIGGEST completing ( Although I understand that it is probably my personal issue) is the fact that I was NEVER able to find a dedicated Discord server to VOICE with people playing this game... I'm sorry but, playing an MMO and typing is super difficult to do, especially for my boomer brain, which makes Voicing super convenient , so every time I drop the game because I simply have nobody to talk to about it, not even in the chat. I would often find people in the world that would SOMETIMES share a few sentences, but then promptly disappear, I have never once made a friend in the game

Ele spear is so fun!! I love thats a ranged weapon, im not sure if the damage numbers are ok but Im having a blast testing it.

Rev Spear is 100% the weak link for the professions this time round. I'm sure the amount of Torment stacks it pumps is pretty good, but it doesn't feel good to use. Abyssal Raze is fantastic and I love that there is a clear intent on "Use one ability, the rest adjust its cooldown", alongside the mine ability being a skill shot and not a straight backwards evade (you have no idea how happy that genuinely makes me). The problem I have with it personally is that with its current iteration, it is a weapon that you stack the buff as fast as possible, and then switch to another weapon to use its skills until the swap cooldown resets. I don't need to camp the weapons 100% of the time when I use it, but my interaction with it is IDENTICAL to staff on Rev. Use skill 5 when you need it, then swap back to your other weapon set. The auto chain doesn't work all that well, the ranged auto is too slow, its death by 1000 cuts. My arm-chair developer opinion would speed up the auto chain and make it a 3 hit melee, instead of the hybrid it currently is. Make Abyssal Raze last 10 seconds so you can track it with weapon swap and have skill 5 come out faster OR cost less energy.

Thief spear is fun. But the damage is way too low. There's not enough benefit in learning the combos. Almost every other weapon can do more damage. Fun in pve but useless in pvp, generally speaking.

Warrior's spear is based on damage, and yet, it cannot do the kind of damage other weapons do, soooooo, meh. but seeing the staff being an unpopular weapon choice and the weapon mastery not benefiting the warrior from past 2 expansions, let's not have too much hope for this one. As for ele, even though the damage is not there and it's spammy cause of the short duration on etching.....It is fun fun fun. Even if it's not meta, take it out for a drive in open world.
