I legit think they may have just used a tape measure and taken all marking from it. It sounds exactly like one, and in the one "close up" we have of it, and in some further less-close-up shots, it seems to bend in the same ways as a tape measure. Like tape measures have that u-bend in them which can give them surprising rigidity if the forces are aligned in the right way. I think you can see that curve in the "blade" a few times. Also, tape measures are everywhere, and where else are you going to get metal that is so thin? You could probably get it, but it'd be easier to get a tape measure. Still kind of embarrassing lol

They say that its not easy to come by in their area. Along that people train with it for years among other things about it throughout the entire video. They also said that they made it just for fun to test the idea of a anime weapon. That its length changes from scene to scene.

I suppose that depends on if you want it to function more like a whip or a flail. Whips have the smallest amount of weight at the tip, because that part needs to be light in order to achieve the highest speed.

@@user-xf2mg2ou9g What are you talking about? Daggers and rapiers are extremely deadly, and both were used on the battlefield. In a context where people wear little clothing and armor, the Urumi could be a strong weapon for crowd control. Cutting with it looks very tricky, but I've found enough cutting tests to see that it can cut fairly deep, probably even enough to cut off fingers, disable a hand or cause somewhat serious wounds. And as you've said, the show itself is intimidating. So there are uses for it, although it's not surprising that the Indians eventually dropped it in favor of other swords (that were probably already used alongside the Urumi before it went out of fashion).

I have an idea for how to make a whip sword. You cut a sword blade into chevron like segments, and placed some sort of flexible spring loaded core linking them together. The idea being the flex of the internal core connecting the segments lets them bend around like a whip. Then as an added bonus you can add a mechanic into the hilt where if you pull down the core and lock it in place you can tension the core, forcing the segments into alignment with each other to allow it to act like a normal sword. So while the core is under tension it acts like a normal sword, and while it is loose it acts like a whip. The issue is I fully expect this idea to be prone to failure, having a flexible core like that inside an item designed for melee combat. But could be a cool proof of concept, and maybe there is a more clever way to implement the system or very durable materials that would make the failure risk much lower.

Mitsuri’s sword is loosely based off a real-life sword from India called the Urumi. The sword in the anime is not particularly accurate in terms of appearance and how she carries it but it is a real weapon. The actual weapon is made up of multiple sheets/tails instead of one and is worn by wrapping it around the users waist instead of being placed in a scabbard. How she uses it is also surprising accurate in some regards because despite being considered a sword it is more often used more like a flail or whip in rapid circular motions meaning that the person using it must be both flexible and quick, furthermore it is best suited for striking multiple enemies instead of a single target. It was not a particularly common weapon in Indian or Sri Lanka either due to how difficult it was to wield and produce ( you had to reach the final level of Indian martial arts training to be even considered for training with it ). Demon slayer for the most part got it right.

In construction (or rather deconstruction) They use "floppy hammers". Mainly because they are easier on your hands with vibrations. A floppy sword with a large blade, that is still relatively stiff, so much that you can get some force through would be interesting. Maybe with knee joints, so you you have no freedom of movement orthogonally to the blades side and only in the blade front/back-axis. Possibly with aditional springs or rubber in the joints to have it not be super floppy, but can translate some force.
@xero1048

One thing I think is worth noting is that a whip works because it tapers off towards the end. Perhaps if this weapon also did so it could be more effective? I would also imagine a tri bladed, segmented blade could be effective too. The tri blade would eliminate the need for proper edge alignment, and the segment would allow for a strong material while also being able to flex. It would also make it easy to decrease in width as you go further along the whip.

Makes me think of the Hakujin no Tachi from Rurouni Kenshin. A very long sword of Japanese steel worked so thin that one can whip it about like a the silken ribbon of a dancer or a chain-whip. The tip is weighted so that wielder can control each movement with just a flick of the wrist and the target has to dodge by a wide margin to avoid the blade being whipped into them with but a twist. Escentually a long flowing razor edged ribbon of steel that when wielded by a swordsman of artistic level skill can create a very lethal, wide range attack zone . . . unless the opponent has superior speed and reflexes to bypass it.

For a proper whip effect, it needs to be tapered so as to transfer the force in a concentrated manner, and with a slightly thicker blade, the wobble and twisting would be much reduced. It doesn’t have to be much, a tape measure is thinner than 1/10th of a mm, but one of those steel reinforcement bands (the ones with holes in them) that are 1/3rd of a mm would make for a much better simulation, though getting a taper on it would be nigh-impossible. It would also be more dangerous, if the edge was sharpened.

For those who would like to see a real demo of the urumi, the channel "Kerala Tourism" has one they posted about 3 years ago. It also shows why the weapon is traditionally used with a shield despite our host saying early one that he can't imagine why it is.

You should’ve replaced Boromir over a year ago! Also, the Indian sword is THICKER and it wider so it doesn’t twist nearly as easily. Deadliest Warrior tested a real one, and there was Very Little twisting, if any.

If i was trying to make a tape measure sword like this, I'd probably put a light bit of extra weigh on the tip, a whip tapers down so the edge can go very fast, the thin metal swinging in a circle would keep tension at least.

Actually, segmented sword existed in real life. Those could be "fixed" and "lose", lose they would be weaker but had like 5 inches more reach. But not in this way. They were swords with a flexible core that could be loosened by using a mechanical switch. They were extremely rare tho.

Although the measuring tape is flexible metal it does not behave at all like an Urumi. Using it in place of the real thing to emulate the effectiveness of the weapon is like trying to use a cello bow to shoot arrows, it won’t work. Sharpened steel strapping coil might work better if you ever try to revisit this

Strapping coil might not work too well to emulate the urumi since it is usually quite thin and light, it might be better as a Sri lankan style ethunu kaduwa which has many smaller blades

reminds me of the old BBC metal tape video recorders. That steel ribbon was sharp and moving fast.

Don’t know if they sell it in the land down under, but y’all should get some FlexTape or FlexSeal Spray if you can find any to fix Boromir. The spray makes a good rubber layer which would help fix Boromir but also still be good for attacking and seeing damage. The tape works too but I think the spray may work best for you to get some more time outta Boromir

Hmm, I think you need much more tension to cut. How would it be with a heavier tip? So you could get tension through the swing or momentum. The blade-whip could also better wrap the target and reach higher usage. You would naturally have to fasten the blade-whip far better... ^^ friedly greeting C.

The Urumi reminds me of one of those metal tape measures more than anything. Nearly got a nasty injury reeling it back in too quickly.

It was like trying to cut with measuring tape 🤣 I think it would maybe perform much better if it would be stiffer. A lot more stiffer! Like a springsteelstrip, so it would always want to fight against the bending force, but still bend slightly. Then it could do something.

I’ve always though that her sword/whip was particularly impractical since in demonslayer the only way to kill a demon is decapitation or sunlight (although there’s some rare poison too), and a whip sword is great at slashing and drawing blood but not cutting though bones. Her design too is odd, like a katana that got stretchy powers unlike the thinner real world whip swords or the chain link “conventional” anime whip swords. Tyranth was getting some good wrap around though, against an unarmored opponent it could feasibly slice them up. I don’t know how it would do against a sturdy fabric though. Even with a good blade I think it would be most effective as a bleeding weapon.

Wouldn't a heavier point make it more controllable, especially regarding edge alignment, and increase its wrappability? Also, why not have a tape measure style retraction roll at the end of the handle to make the length vary?

The support video for Boromir definitely reminds me of his distant cousin, Mythbuster's "Buster" when he needed some help as well. There's also a fun one with How Ridiculous' T-Rex toy "Rexy" who is used as a target/test dummy in a lot of their videos. Poor Rexy has had multiple trips to the emergency room to have his guts re-stuffed and even a severed limb repaired with a branch. Here's to the dummies of various channels and groups, bravely standing in to take the damage so our squishy hosts don't have to!

I think a way of adding power to the whip sword would be to add a weight to the end, would also help it wrap around stuff

Would a snake sword like the one from Soulcalibur move more like the demon slayer because of the control of the retraction to make it more stiff when you need it to be?

I feel like with the lack of edge alignment, an addition of sharpened “teeth” along the sides of the steel would potentially let you actually accomplish something while also adding a bit of weight to help control the otherwise “too flimsy and light for anything” weapon
