Consoles are obsolete and waste of money. If you want hands on control use motorized faders.

Hi! Thanks for your input :) Yes Computers and Plugins are capable of doing almost everything now, but I have yet to find a motorized fader solution that works flawlessly with all DAWs and have either got the cannel switching right (mackie control is a pain) or have a sufficient amount of faders! Plus these consoles just sound beautiful, so why not? Hope that helps! All the best, Tobi

@@tobitweaks I not gonna lie consoles are cool, but in reality they don't save time or sound that impressive, even high end ones. Better solution is studio desk with outboard space for racks. Besides softube control 1 mk2 is very cool. Did you try that?
@tobitweaks7 күн бұрын
@ Hmm okay interesting, don‘t know what consoles you used before but I do work with consoles in my daily mixing process and while setup does take its time once it‘s setup you are soo much faster! Also you get tons of coloration and dynamic processing that you would need two or three additional plugins per track for. But that is just my workflow :) Yes I had a console 1 and sold it - too complicated and never really worked. The idea of switching between tracks on the unit was cool but never really worked, once you duplicated a track in your session for additional processing everything fell apart. Also it still used the Mackie control protocol for it - the automatic assign works only in banks of 8!! Hope that helps. All the best, Tobi

Hi! How do you like the MAGNUM 3 from ADT in terms of sound and functionality compared to 5MT? Is there a difference? And compared to SSL - will the mix differ in depth or color? There were just so many discussions on the forums before. Thanks for the video!😀😉😊
@tobitweaks14 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you so much for your comment! The Magnum 3 might be the most in-depth analog system I have ever heard of! Compressor, Expander AND Gate in every channel, 5!! Band EQ with 4 fully parametric bands, full inline functionality, all the options for the center section? Super practical! I know ADT „insiede out“ pretty well now having serviced these consoles as well, but the the SSL - not so much experience from my side yet. Would love to do a summing video on one, too! But 5mt and Magnum should use the same components so just the Magnum having more tools is what can make your mix more sophisticated. The Raw signal path should be very much comparable if not identical! Hope that helps. All the best, Tobi

Hallo Tobi, the power supply from the mixing desk has an output voltage of 5V and 25A., i.e. 125W. I assume other supplies would provide the typical 24V. I believe it a mixing desk it may not impossible that these power supplies are linear to avoid digital noise. The power supplies in the server are switched and as you can see one rail alone as 300W (5V 58A), so they are much more efficient (with the digital noise, but in a computer you don't care). I would not try to separate the PSU from the chassis - you will run in a lot of problems. One fix might be to use modern fans with regulated speed - or simply move the rack some place else. I really like your channel ! Viele Grüsse - Matthias

@@matthiasfouquet-lapar9669 Hi! Thank you very much for your input! Congrats on getting the configurations to work. Not sure why this project facinates me so much, I am not really into audio engineering at all - anyway a few thoughts came to mind from watching this: 1. You mention that some of the faders/clusters are not working, later when adjusting the sensitivity you pull them out and part of the print-boards are visible. I noticed that there are 2 chips (one labled 7.2 and one 4.2) which are both PALCE chips - these chips are "programmed" logic chips and I belive they are only guranteed to retain the configuration for 10 years, so chances are that some failing boards "simply" needs new programmed chips. Cloning these chips can be a bit tricky but I am fairly confident I can assist you with this if you need it at some point - might bring some of the units back to life. 2. Great that you get further into the configuration files (are the documentation available?), removing and modifying stuff is a good way to play around with it, but for maximum learning/understanding I personally have always found it better to start with a new blank configuration file - then build it up line by line - this way you make sure that you understand each and every line that is in there. 3. I am not sure I fully grasp the system, however the MC2 interface software seems fairly simple in first glance - as I see it it "only" a user-interface that takes your configuration as input and then sends commands to the management sofware on the server when you click interfaces/outputs... - If one could think of a way for the interface to work better, then I don't think it would be an insurmountable task to create a new interface software, which in turn could improve the usability of the system in general... something to keep in mind for down the road when you start actually using the system and think "ah it would be great if you could just click x".
@tobitweaks21 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you so much for following along closely! Actually the clusters dropping out have nothing to do with the faders but are DSP chips inside the Main Switch. Still so cool to know what these faders are made of! Also yes I‘d love to start some of these configs from scratch so this comment lives in my heart now thank you for encouraging me! Lastly well reprogramming any of this software seems like a huge task for me right now but we‘ll see what the future brings - would love to start programming arduinos to get the hang. As I really appreciate the hardware side of the MC2 82 System it could be a fantastic move to update some of the software! All the best, Tobi

If you want a console for mixing don’t if you want one for tracking then you will work faster with better results. But a console for mixing is insane. I have an ATI paragon 2 console in my studio it was API’s live version of an SLS 4000E with API mic preamps EQ and dynamics on every channel. But even though I have 56 channels I mix in the box. But everything goes through the desk for tracking.
@tobitweaksАй бұрын
Oh yes, ATI! I totally feel where you are coming from. Recall and flexibility sometimes just isn‘t quite there on analog boards to pull off a complete and satisfying mix! Let me offer you one great use case tho: Electronic music productions!! House music for example. The track count is sufficient, the punch is there and while compressors ain‘t too common anyways (roast me in the comments but you do have much less work to do compared to let’s say an acoustic drum kit) the EQ on every channel does all the sound shaping you need and the fader automation feels great! I might present that in a future video. Hope that helps :) All the best, Tobi
@SHUTUPANDRECORDАй бұрын
I say don’t listen to the people telling you analog mixing is obsolete because it’s not easy or repeatable… Those are specific reasons why you SHOULD try it. There is no comparison to the thrill of physically working a console in a performance of a mix vs. drawing automation and printing a mix off. None. Two different worlds. Neither right. Or wrong. But I just get so tired of being told mixing on a console is a compromise. No way. It’s the other way around!
@joesalyersАй бұрын
@@tobitweaks Oh yea I'm not saying don't get one but I came up in the mid 90s when all we had was analog, and I still have all of my analog gear, so I see the both analog's strengths and weaknesses. I still do some mixes in Analog but its mostly when its a small track count and the client wants it. I could see it being a benefit for dance style music to get an analog punch to very digital mixes. But I'm on the other side of that, where its mostly full bands coming in to track their album and we use the console as our inputs for the DAW, which gives me EQ & compression on the way in which does make mixing in the box easier. But I could see building a dance track in the box with soft synths and drum samples and bringing it back out to get the console flavor on it. So I do agree with that Tobi!! You have a great desk by the way!!
@joesalyersАй бұрын
@@SHUTUPANDRECORD I think the way I wrote that came off a bit different than it sounded in my head when I wrote it sorry if it came off snarky or mean. I have young engineers ask me all the time if they should get a console when they are mostly mixing and not tracking things. I normally tell them not to waste their money on a desk if you only want it for mixing. I've been doing this since the mid 90s when it was all analog.Both digital and analog have strengths and weaknesses. I've seen this happen so many times at my own studio an engineer who does really great in the box mixes tries to go and mix their song on my desk but doesn't have the hours clocked in on a console to really know how to make it sound great. Like any new piece of gear or plugin, you have to learn it. I enjoy working with a desk everyday, I have videos on my channel showing my old desk and its EQ and so on. But it take time to learn anything. I know guys who get great mixes on consoles still to this day, and I know guys who get great mixes in the box. But for me the best workflow has been using a console for tracking and then mixing in the box because time is money, so the console speeds up the tracking process but slows down the mix. So I have found a good balance for both.
@SHUTUPANDRECORDАй бұрын
@ dude. awesome. I appreciate your clarification. 1000% agree. I just (obviously) strongly believe you can’t really understand what makes digital valuable and useful if you don’t understand the same about analog… and all day everyday you find people preaching that plug ins and emulation has surpassed analog. Which is true, but only in convenience! And Price per channel! Thanks again for clarifying, and apologies if I made you feel personally attacked! -Marty
