Layering for warmth is braindead, how tf do you layer for cold weather when you always run hot? If I wear a merino baselayer, fleece and jacket, I'm sweaty after the first run in -10°C

I'm going to break my new year's resolution and offer a youtube commentary - no hype. I'm very familiar with RAB's offerings, among other well-known premium brands - just ask the wife! Also, Will, your review doesn't include "ALL RAB's down jackets" - far from it. Honestly, Will, your Electron pro review here is (negatively) biased because you don't have the correct size for your build. There's no chance that you are a medium in this jacket, or possibly any of those tried here; go large or go home. Also, Fjallraven doesn't fit like RAB; same goes for Arcteryx. Correct sizing matters as much as anything in a down jacket. The Electron Pro easily won for me against the Positron and Neutrino last year when I was making my selection. I'm 5'10"/185 -190lbs, broad shouldered at 45" chest. The Electron pro in XL fits me perfectly, and it keeps me unquestionably warm at 0 degrees F and lower in light/moderate activity, wearing a light base+light mid layer underneath; It's almost too much at times. It's also very wind and moisture resistant with its Pertex Quantum pro exterior, etc. If they made it in 30D or 40D exterior - for added durability vs. lower weight - it would category-kill most of the overpriced and other styleized crap on the down market for the everyday user. Sorry Arceteryx. I don't want for the "expedition" weight/fill of the Positron/Neutrino. Frankly, those jackets are more than you want/need in most situations, whereas the Electron works in a wide range of temperatures. And those jackets' wrist cuffs are nothing special. The Electron's streamlined cuffs serve and work perfectly in daily use, and IMO should be available on more RAB jackets; they keep the cold out, stay put, and allow proper (ski) gloves to be cinched over the cuff - the way it should be. They also just stay out of your way with less bulk. In short, the cuffs provide a unique and valuable feature of this jacket that sets it apart from all other RAB down jackets. The Electron Pro also includes a terrific hood, with simple/effective adjustability. Size L in RAB's jackets is too tight on my chest, but mostly fits otherwise. As denoted on reputable retail sites: The Electron has a more athletic/trim fit, and XL is recommended if you are on the fence between L and XL. So, yeah, I can't say enough good about the Electron Pro; it's the "mummy bear" of the RAB down lineup. I wear it anytime it's below freezing vs. my Montane Duality Lite - another brand with superior fit gradations. Great RAB color-ways to boot. The Elec Pro can be had on sale for around $200 USD or less - you just have to be patient and shop around.

Maybe in China when they pluck birds alive to extract down. The Chinese eat dogs while they are alive. They aren't remotely interested in the welfare of the animals that produce the down- or the workers who make the jacket.

Hey dude. I bought this bag the other day. There doesn't seem to be any way of securing the strap cover when it's stowed away? There's a hole that it goes into when I roll it up but no velcro or straps or anyway of securing it so it falls out when I'm walking with straps on. Any ideas? Its it something stupid I'm missing? I just ordered a OSC Outdoor Survival Canada, the specs blow CG out of the water totally. It has a waterproof membrane with taped seams, water wicking and heat reflecting lining, goose down rather than duck, and many more features. Plus it is only $825CAD, can’t wait to use it here in Alberta. Love my CG wyndham but I have been cold in it in -30, the OSC is rated to -40

Have you ever tried Mackage? I just purchased a Mackage Sullivan parka. Truth be told, I have never tried on a Canada Goose jacket, but the Mackage was unreal. I would put my money on Mackage any day over CG. I can also say that the Mackage could be paired with business attire without the overly typical Canada Goose logo.

The older version was in three sizes and the LT and new regular Atmos are just in two, which seems like a cost savings for Osprey. Size is based on your torso size. Go into an outdoor store that sells packs and get ur torso measured for the right size.

That jacket is shit, bought it in Denmark for about 2 months ago, when it's about only 6 celcius degree I get very cold and there is a very cold spot in the pocket corners, there's not even any soft warm insulatioen in the pockets (that you get in many other jackets). It's the same with the sleeves. The fabric is also very thin. I paid 3.646,00 DKK for this jacket, its a robbery. My old winther jacket (Solid) I payed 350 DKK and that is just as warm as this Fjellraven. The only good part of the jacket is the hood , that one is pretty warm. So never ever waste any money on their products, you only pay for a name that might was good long time ago.

Another great video Will. You are a class act. I have 3 of these, the Langford, + Moose Knuckles, North Face Expedition Grade & Fjallraven, bought based on your review of it. Totally warranted and accurate. Durning the pandemic, with way to much time and money on my hands bought dozens of winter coats. Nothing else to do but buy em and test em! I think that the Expedition is cozy. And warm. But not as warm as it's weight would suggest. And ridiculously overpriced, for what you get and for the quality. I find that they wear out, specifically at the cuffs. And for all it's apparent ruggedness, anywhere where abrasion happens on occasion. And a real deal breaker is the absence of a hem draw cord. Recent Mooseknuckles seems to be as warm. I have some older ones that used real goose down to 90% fill which are much warmer than current ones. Yes, quality from where I sit has gone done everywhere. And by large degree. These old Mooseknuckles are my personal favorites, for it's combination of warmth, style and comfort. MK may or may not be as warm or better the CG, but they are more comfortable and easier to move around in. The CG Langford sucks. Here on the beach in SM, CA, even a moderate Marine breeze with a bit of fog and wind in 40+/- 2 F cuts right through the coat, freezing my, well you know. The Fjallravens are great, albeit a bit weird. The Expedition light may be as warm as the CG Expedition. And seems to be more durable. And crisp. The Full Expedition is absolutely warmer than the CG Expeditions I have. But a bit bulky, just like the CG expedition. But they seem to repel humidity better the CG. But they feel cold and weird to my skin when first putting on. Perhaps because of the material. But it goes away after a few minutes. And pound for pound these should be warmer by far as use Goose rather than Duck Down. Don't like duck down comparatively. Apples to Apples, I find Goose down is twice as warm and 40% lighter for similar effect. And feels better. Elfen and airy with better breathability compared to duck down. No brainer given a choice. Finanly, favorite. The North Face Retro McMurdo?. Not sure which. But all the expedition grade parkas are as good. This is not your standard NF product, which in my opinion is generally trash. They do still make mountain grade stuff on occasion and in limited runs. This is one of them. At $700 USD list and $500 USD street, they are cheap. This retro is half the weight ( or less) of GG Expedition and MK Sterling, warmer than both and has a true waterproof shell. Dryvent. Dryvent can be problematic. Though I find it outperforms say a Gortex Pro Arcteryx Alpha SV in repelling rain, it does so at a cost. I does not breath as well. Could be a problem for some. But i have not noticed it. And given parka's lighter weight and much better maneuverability I wouldn't care. And don't. And this parka is absolutely bomb proof!

I have a severe case of OCD for jackets and i look at every detail in a design. The design of this jacket is about as good as it gets for realistic city use in very cold conditions. No zippers in handwarmers (90% of companies get this wrong and therefore the sleeve ends always tear before anything else from having a sharp, often metal zipper rubbing against the sleeves every time your hands go in and out), the hood is indeed FAR superior to the hood of any other jacket, the ykk 10, the double baffles to eliminate cold spots, the higher denier material while still feeling like one of those lightweight puffers, the snaps instead of velcro, the cords instead of elastics... i could go on and on. Just an amazing jacket!

There's a couple of other RAB down jackets worth a mention, I'm not sure if either of these are available outside of the UK and Europe though. The Batura has a 450g fill weight and is fully waterproof, that one is more of a technical parka. There's also the Expedition 8000, which as the name suggests is the most extreme jacket in the RAB range. I actually have one for the coldest depths of winter and with a 526g fill weight (850 fill power) and box wall baffles you'd certainly notice a difference when comparing it to the Fjallraven Expedition Lite, It's so thick and puffy that it honestly makes the Canada Goose Expedition look and feel like a rain coat! Being bright yellow with a reflective 'EXPEDITION 8000' logo on the arm it's a bit of a conversation starter too. I also have the Mythic Ultra in that same orange. It feels premium, it's reasonably stylish and is amazingly warm for how light it is, but if it wasn't on sale I would have probably chosen either the Valandre Troll or Feathered Friends Volant instead.

We are going to Breck, CO for Christmas. We are from south TX so not too familiar with snow & the cold. My 25 year old son will be snowmobiling for the first time & I know when I did it a few weeks back in Winter Park I was miserably cold with my Bogner. What jacket, layers do you recommend to keep him warm for 2 hours? He will not be skiing, only snowmobiling. I have been looking online at jackets and layering but it is so confusing for me! I’m afraid to order the wrong jacket or set of layers.
@WillFaulkner
@WillFaulkner 27 күн бұрын
Depending on the temperatures and examples, he will probably need a base layer (Uniqlo heat tech), fleece sweater, and then a down parka. Sweat pants and snow pants over top. Then hat, mitts, and scarf. If his hands and feet get cold, you can also get warmers to go in his socks and mitts.

The Mythic Ultra has the TILT reflective technology which significantly increases heat retention. The face and lining fabric is very soft which makes for great experience. The hydrophobic down and DWR coating on these jackets makes them more resistant to the elements.
