Maintenance is pretty minimal, mostly just washing with freshwater, checking the bolts and charging the battery. The main issue is keeping the sand out of the battery to unit connection.

I wish they had put a bend in the strut like the ultra and made it more ergonomic, I really could not care less about the shift lock system, Duotone have shown you don't need something like this to provide interchangeable handles/booms. I'd much prefer the ergonomics over the straight strut that the shift lock seems to require. I simply cannot use a straight strut wing, it creates tendonitis within a few sessions as the ergonomics are so poor. North's adherence to this design just puts me right off, every year I look at them and every year I dismiss them due to that straight strut and poor ergonomics, they literally have one wing I will consider which is the ultra, which is a shame as I otherwise like what they are doing.
@hydrofoilacademy

I actually agree with you on the strut. The good news is that the 2025 Nova Pro has a boom and an ergo strut. I've used it a few times and I absolutely love it.

Thanks mate. I’ve not used it with any of those. I use the 1180 with the speed 180 and with a 60cm fuse, that’s perfect. I’d say the 220 would be the best out of that bunch. I feel the others would be too slow. Hope that helps.

@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy Ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! The skate and the eagle are definitely faster than the SF and are more efficient with better glide but the North SF turn better, pump better and have a lower stall speed. I use the SF 830 as my go too prone and foil drive foil.
@chrispewkreme
@chrispewkreme Ай бұрын
I surfed a 925 and 1125 pretty much every day. Occasionally the 725. 725 was amazing to turn but was nearly impossible for me to pump in smaller waves. It shreds turns and it’s ridiculously fast. 925 was fairly easy to pump but it will stall outta nowhere on you. You gotta be sensitive. It turns well and has decent speed. 1125 is basically impossible to stall but it will drop out on you when you go slow enough. It doesn’t like to turn. It harnesses any little bump which is good if you want ti but can be frustrating when it harnesses bumps you weren’t even trying to get. Now I run an 880 and it shreds turns, it’s pretty fast, and it pumps all day. It just doesn’t wanna stall until you’re at a dead stop. If you like the 1125, you can run a 880 with some learning. If you ran a 925, you can easily handle a 880. 780 might be better. If you ran the 725, you can probably get a 580 or 680.

How does this compare to the Foil Drive for downwinding?
@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy Ай бұрын
Good question! Look, I'm not a fan of using the Foil Drive for downwinding. I find going upwind in anything more than 15kts a really horrible experience. It chews up battery and its so hard to get the pod in the water in waves upwind. This is where the parawing comes into it's own. Goes up wind like a dream (its fun to do) and you can position yourself in the best possible place. So, in my view, there is no comparison. The parawing beats FD and wing packdowns everyday of the week for self positioning DW runs. The only area of DW it doesn’t dominate is traditional offshore big sends. This should be left for SUP DW in my view.

FWIW, there is no difference in the density of water depending on the depth as water is basically incompressible. (I've looked up an example, and 4km deep in de ocean water would be 1.8% denser than on the surface. That's basically nothing, and given that we're talking about a 1/2m difference here...) The reduced drag can only come from less mast under the water.

Great video. Tip for us duffers!……yes that is me! There is a balance point on the board, where you can stand semi “ski style”. Both feet forward (ish) Practice it for 10 minutes “like wot the video suggests…” Shuffle your feet around until you feel it. You will know Basically both feet near to each other. Pointing in a generally forward direction. Surprisingly stable. Deep breath! Shuffle them around, the last few degrees! Job done You have done the foot switch. And have not fallen off ( it encourages the hips to open up, just like what the video says) Then shuffle the feet into normal position Any dry foot switch is a good foot switch😀

Superb tips, thanks Gav. Couldn’t agree more about riding high on the mast. I’m only using one foil these days (HA680) and it wants to be ridden high in the water. Especially as you said, once you start riding fast moving ocean swell. It comes alive. Like finding another gear. But it takes a lot of concentration. I also constantly remind myself to do. Together with keeping my back foot over the mast.

Think the key to flying high is having a foil that can handle tip breaches without crashing. Axis ART fall if tip was breached. Axis ART V2 can be sailed up wind with the tips out of the water. ( yes you can blame the gear sometimes) This provides confidence to ride higher and higher. Best feeling is sailing high and feeling the chop effect the foil and playing with how much foil can come out of the water.

Drag control is key, obviously, but water density does not change by depth. Water and liquids cannot be compressed like air (air density changes by heigth) but, although water preasure increases by depth, liquid density is constant even in the deep sea.
@hydrofoilacademy

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn’t know that but it seems obvious now that you’ve mentioned it. Very interesting.
@derekbuchanan5839
@derekbuchanan5839 Ай бұрын
Not entirely correct. The density (specific gravity) of water does differ with depth especially where there’s been rain or you are near freshwater river mouths. This difference can occur for a few meters from the surface down.
@dcmackintosh
@dcmackintosh Ай бұрын
Absolutely true about water being an incompressible fluid, any engineer or scientist will catch this. I've seen this misconception elsewhere, I'm not sure where it comes from. As far as fresh and salt water, I suspect that anywhere there is wave action, they would be mixed pretty quickly. Salt water is only about 2.5% more dense anyway, not much difference in lift, drag, or buoyancy of the submerged components.
@Giroux68
@Giroux68 Ай бұрын
The depth only matters because the wing induced drag is decreased when close to the surface of the water just like an airplanes induced drag decreases close to the ground. It’s called ground effect. With a foil it could be called surface effect.
@watercrazylion
@watercrazylion Ай бұрын
@@Giroux68 Ground effect of an airplane is caused primarily by the ground or water obstructing the creation of wingtip vortices and interrupting downwash behind the wing, also called "cushion effect." With an hydrofoil the air above the water is of very low density compared to the water, so the air will not obstruct the waterflow, the wing will push the water up to a small wave. And while an airplane feels ground effect underneath a wing, the air is above a hydrofoil, not underneath. I read on the net that the resistance of a hydrofoil with a small angle of attack as is the case with our hydrofoils, the resistance can be a bit bigger close to the water surface but I think it is unnoticable. I also read that density of water in choppy seas can be a bit less due to mixing with air and this effect is the greates close to the surface. So a little less resistance (but also less lift) in (breaking) waves.

Perfect (5.1 m 15 kts) able to ride UpWind, almost nailing Gybes, No Harness. I would also recommend First attempts 1. Go downwind, not in big waves (side shore wind best). High Aspect Foil, Board 50 L > Kg Weight and wide, 75 cm mast therefore easy to balance on and concentrate on ParaWing. I noticed you had a Kiteleash On.
