I can't wait for the new video about the state of Nvidia + Hyprland + NixOS, especially in terms of daily usage and your workflow!
@minecraftpufferfish9066Ай бұрын
I've been using this exact setup for around 8 months now, and I can confidently say that it's kinda bad. For context: - GTX 1070 - i5 9400F - 16 GB of DDR4 - Using NixOS unstable branch (rolling-release branch) in my flake (have tried running stable as well) - Proprietary Nvidia drivers (tried both the latest release and the stable release) Here are some issues I've encountered: 1. Shit breaks, and it breaks all the time. Well, sometimes it doesn't work in the first place. Every update is a gamble. Will it break? What will be the issue this time? Is it a NixOS issue? A Hyprland issue? A Wayland issue? An Nvidia issue? Some combination of the above? The worst part is that you're just left there waiting until the next commit which, hopefully, will fix your issue, which is different every time. Sure, you could roll back to the stable commit if you're using overlays, but it doesn't always work and it's a pain the in the ass. 2. The gaming performance is atrocious. Awful input delay and constant flickering issues. 3. Random miscellaneous issues, e.g. flickering, stuttering, input delay, crashes, etc. I installed XFCE alongside Hyprland a few weeks ago for gaming purposes, but over the last few days I've been using XFCE exclusively, and I've had no issues doing anything. NONE. You could give Hyprland a try, sure. But I have, and I'm a bit underwhelmed to say the least.

The answer to video title - yes, objectively. As someone who prefers VSync, it caused me a lot of trouble on windows. Because for some reason whenever there's an artificial limit to framerate such as VSync, the GPU's frequency stays low. Seemingly because AMD driver on windows tries to "guess" whenever you're gaming or not. So when it sees low GPU utilization (such as with a framerate limiter) it doesn't let card accelerate which brought me stutter on windows. Uncapping FPS in the game fixes this issue. But it's just nonsense in my opinion. Linux has no issues with VSync and utilizes GPU properly.

Question is: do you want the impossible with a standardized and main stream like Windows or do you want to gradually tinkering, step by step and starting from (in this case) openSUSE Tumbleweed? The best choice never comes for newbies. Even the sequences on what do you need to install first is crucial. That's why I will always discourage people to chose these distro instead of the main independent ones. Wanna have the chameleon side? Go pure, go openSUSE. Wanna stay Debian? Go Debian 12 and above even if also Mint is a smart solution and more time saver, there is no shame in that. And so on. Tendentiously having the fully independent distro is something that build in your mind the IT education. The order and logic for any configuration system. Reading, learning and giving yourself the right time for your personal learning curve is a must. Linux isn't for newbies that "never have time to learn".

As system76 devs are around here, here is an idea: i think some people (me included) would like to test the alpha/beta and report some bugs if found, but are more everyday users than pros. Maybe a section on GitHub, or a Video on how to: install and use latest version (as stated in the pinned comment) and how and where to report bugs would be beneficial. On the other hand: maybe thats exactly what you don't want as it could potentially create more overhead than actual benefit? Either way: happy bughunt!

This is really early alpha. I'm not sure if it is even cooked enough to compare their design of the desktop metaphor to other DEs yet. I'm sure they will get the technicalities perfect down the line but I'm more excited to see how they approach making a new desktop distinction from Gnome and KDE. Hoping for the best of both worlds. The pretty polished intuitive design of Gnome with the pragmatism of KDE. Make video of your opinions on their design and approach once it is more cooked.

Flickering with NVIDIA and Wayland will, within the next few months or so, very likely cease to be a problem. NVIDIA's 555 proprietary drivers have finally exposed a new API, allowing for explicit sync directly with the hardware, and when implemented into the desktops as it is with Xwayland currently, should help to remove the vast majority of visual bugs experienced without it. It's already merged into KDE and Gnome, and are idle in the code until their next releases.

It's less about what it brings to the table and more about System76 not having to deal with the Gnome team's BS. They have a reputation for being a PITA to work with. As far as Wayland goes it's newer and more secure than x11 since x11 has been pretty much dead in the water for years at this point.
