Thanks David. I should do this more often as I must have quite a few engines that haven't been run in a few years. Cheers, Alan.
@flyer3849Күн бұрын
how did you get the length of the rod? I just got a similar engine with no piston
@RetroSteamTechКүн бұрын
You know the depth of the cylinder, the stroke and how long your piston is. The piston doesn't need to go all the way to the back of the cylinder, it should stop just before the steam inlet. With this information you can easily estimate how long the rod should be.

Both nice looking runners Alan. I was wondering what that lever did 😂😂. I thought it was some sort of speed control, but it turned out to be direction change. Interesting. Most wobblers are short stroke. Have you ever tried a long stroke one ? I'm in the process of making one, but not sure how well it will run. Hmmmm. Time will tell. Cheers Rob
@RetroSteamTech2 күн бұрын
Some of the Mamods have a 3/4" stroke but that's about the longest I think that I have seen on a wobbler. Be very interesting to see how yours turns out. Cheers, Alan.

Interesting Alan i will keep my eye out for them on the flea market i visit most thursdays Q1 are the boilers brass or copper Q2 what sort of pressure is the safety valve set at thanks for sharing👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🚂🚂 Kev
@RetroSteamTech2 күн бұрын
They are just a bit different from your Mamods or Bowmans Kev. The boilers are brass and the safety valves are set at around 15 PSI. The other models are various versions of the 53, single cylinder, larger boiler, the 54 which is a twin cylinder larger boiler and the mysterious 55 which has three cylinders according to Mersey adverts of the time. Although I've never seen a 55. Cheers, Alan.

There is a button on the front panel labelled "BOTH SIDES" I assume if you select this it will automatically play both sides.

You pronounced it correctly. They went out of business. I was heartbroken. Their steam loco is fantastic. It's live steam and has forward, reverse and neutral lever. (Runs better than enginediy.)

I have a brand new-in-box Crosman 761XL with the gold receiver, wood pump handle/stock and rifled barrel. It is in mint condition, with the original box and owner's manual. I bought it new when I was a young teenager back in the mid 70s....only shot it a few dozen times with pellets then put it away, because I bought a .20 Benjamin and it shot much better. I'm also going to sell my mint condition wood stock Crosman 622 pump action CO2 Rifle and my like-new Crosman wood stock 1400 Pump Rifle. (I always liked real wood stocks, not the crappy plastic stocks.) What might these Airguns be worth?
@RetroSteamTech6 күн бұрын
All nice airguns. The best place to gauge second-hand value is ebay in America. Over here in the UK previous sales on auction sites can be helpful. My guess would be, 761XL - £150 to £200. 622 - £200 to £300 and the 1400 £100 to £200.

The tape on the cheekpiece is used to raise the cheekpiece as there isn't an adjustable one. Usually you would tape targets to the stock to get the height you want. Great job saving a nice rifle!
@RetroSteamTech7 күн бұрын
The tape alone wouldn't be enough to raise the cheekpiece significantly. As you say, there may have been something else taped to it at one time.

I have the Castle Durham, Durham mk2, Durham 900. York mk2 and the Trent mk 1. The Durham 900 and York mk2 use a Vifa tweeter, but the others use Castle's own tweeter. This Castle tweeter uses the dreaded ferrofluid and it is known to "dry up". However, all three of my Castle speakers that use this tweeter are working perfectly!: The Durham mk1 is the oldest of my Castles - 1986-1989 - but its treble still sparkles. I know the Pembroke was manufactured in the early Eighties and from your snippet of Tchaikovsky, it sounds like your tweeters ate working perfectly! So much for ferrofluid drying up...
@RetroSteamTech8 күн бұрын
It's been 6 years since I restored the Pembrokes and they are still working superbly, tweeters and all.

Thanks Rob. Yes, the time and effort spent on the wood was well worth it. Yes again, where the diameter of the barrel increases towards the muzzle that's a weight. They don't tend to come up for sale very often, I think when people get hold of them they tend to keep them. Cheers, Alan.

My SE3 (1957) plus another one Ive worked on (c.1960) both had the wire boiler straps too, I always thought it was a better idea than the flat ones as you dont need to try and get a screw inside the firebox which Ive found very tricky, another great video!
@RetroSteamTech23 күн бұрын
I agree. Never really worked out why some had flat straps and others had wire ones. I guess a wire strap is more complicated to make as it's threaded. Certainly easier to put together.
