The power will be on for a number of people- solar. Generators will be used until fuel runs out. Small solar systems and portable rechargeable power stations will last for a long time. Those without these items will die quickly. For long term use of a small generator you need to build a wood gasifier and have access to a wood source. May things will be different when the power grid goes out but it will take people that are prepared a fairly long time before they resort to living like the 1800’s

Congress was briefed on the likely effect of an EMP attack on the USA, and came to the conclusion that 90% of people would die in the first year. And they also concluded that the electric grid would probably NEVER be fully restored - only in certain "critical" areas.

Too bad the floating white dots didn't go away! Please explain. Does it just mean you are going to say resilient? In the 1870s, there were lots of old growth forests and trees to build with. Land to grow things on, not contaminated with chemicals. Springs and streams with clean water. Wild animals to hunt and rivers full of fish, clams and crawfish. Wood to burn. No gigantic authoritarian government controlling everything you do.

The horse and buggy industry would return. Streets would be lit by oil or gas. With a person lighting them by hand. Dairy and breads would come from local sources. Ice blocks and inground cellers would be prevalent. Lots of things.

It was sort of funny that as I was watching this, supper was cooking in cast iron pans on the wood stove. My pantry is full of home-canned and dehydrated foods. I have a composting toilet and a non-electric washing machine. I still have a landline phone, and I am not at all into cell phones. I don't carry one with me. I don't have any need or desire for people to be able to contact me 24 hours a day, no matter where I am or what I may be doing. I do wish they still had pay phones for the rare times when I might need one. I still mow my grass with a push lawnmower and I don't use a dishwasher. Once I lived with my 3 kids in a 16 x 32 cabin in Minnesota with no electricity, running water, or bathroom. We had an outhouse and a hand pump outside. Now I have solar-powered lights and things that either weren't available or that I didn't know about in the pre-internet days. When I was growing up it was a monumental thing when we got a TV and a landline phone that was on a party line. One modern thing that I am thrilled with is my new Fitbit. It is helping me get in shape. It has helped me to see that even a 65-year-old Grandma can do more than they think. I walked two miles to the grocery store today up and down the many hills we have here. When I left the store I had over 15 pounds of groceries in my backpack. I think most of the younger generations wouldn't make it in a scenario like this. Without technology, they would have no idea how to live and many of them wouldn't be physically fit enough to manage. I am glad that I was born long before all of this stuff was invented.

I agree with you on some of this and the Fitbit, I started out with a version 4 then upgraded to a version 5 when that one died. I live in the city now but plan on moving outside the city limits at least once I have the money saved up. I grew up in a family build 20x20 foot house behind my mother’s family home, only hydro we had came from my grandmothers place. No running water, mom carried buckets of water over from her mother’s place so we would have drinking water and washing water for dishes. Bathes were taken at my grandmothers place once a week, plus our laundry was done when my grandmother did hers. We had a wood burning stove for heat and to cook on, an outhouse for a bathroom. I miss that kind of lifestyle, but plan on having some modern conveniences in my future home in the country.

There is a lot of generalized exhortation here, but not much practical information. Being told to do things the old-fashioned way does little to teach us how it was done. Platitudes are a waste of breath. My advice: get some books that teach how they did stuff before electricity. Don't expect to google it.

Thanks 4 the video. People have no idea how hard it would be without all the modern conveniences. I’ve been hunting & fishing most of my life I’m 64. I’m not sure how long I would last. If everyone was looking for game & fishing that would run out fast, planting food takes months to grow. Having a plan is a good idea. Emergency food, seeds for planting & a way of cleaning water for drinking. Learning about what edible plants are in your area. A must watch the TV series Alone just to see how long professional survivalist last. It’s eye-opening.

Mother Earth (which I remember vividly in the early '70s), hell. We did what they wrote about.
