The book does not have the satirical tone of the movie. Paul Verhoeven agreed to direct the movie before he read the book. When he did read the book, Verhoeven, who was very liberal, was shocked by its militaristic elements. He decided he could only make the movie if he could mock the ideology of the book.
@OfficialDNJmoviehouseАй бұрын
Which is better in your opinion? I usually hear the book being better but i'm curious for this case since he didn't read it before directing. These days you hear in movie news producers and directors getting blasted for not knowing the source material before making a tv show/movie lol.

Agreed; the book is way better. Which is saying something cuz this was pretty good. The books took a much more serious, subtle approach requiring the reader to understand irony for one, Nihilism, and 19th-20th century geopolitics. Needless to say, like "The Incredibles", there's several layers to unpack in every Heinlein book. He was pretty epic like that.

I mean, would society actually be worse off if the franchise was limited to people who were willing to sacrifice their lives to defend it? Rico's family shows that the sort of people who control our real world society today (selfish super rich plutocrats) were allowed to keep their wealth in that world, but excluded from control over government. Again, would that be so bad? The original book was modeled after Switzerland, not Nazi Germany (mandatory military service for every man as a condition of citizenship, and direct democracy), not fascism.
@OfficialDNJmoviehouseАй бұрын
If you have a society dominated by the military elite, it will have a need to always be in some kind of war IMO. I enjoy this movie a lot dont get me wrong, but the civilization presented here > when you hear the things that the characters say it makes me a little uneasy. Would society be worse off? That would depend on who you ask, im sure its great for military but what about everyone else?

@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse as a vet and student of humanity, I really appreciated the depths Heinlein dove into the philosophy behind all the action. Like humanity having finally united in peace with the trader class with all the profit and the citizen class with all the power, and the producers with all the food and material. It's basically a commentary on Plato's Tripartite division of the soul and government. Society was gaining unrest because there was no one to fight and humans are far to aggressive to leave the military in charge of peace, so the Klendathu war was basically started by the MIC to pressure the government to start a war for profit and for "peace" for the humans. Brilliant book and a lot of frickin fun. "On the Bounce!"
