I've been toying with the same idea, but didn't know how I was going to secure the line in because I don't think you can glue that tank plastic. Interesting you can get enough thread to bite. Was thinking of trying to find a fitting that will fit the cap and use the tank vent already in place. Thanks

One quick question as I'm too lazy to watch through the entire video again. Does the water from the ac just drain out the back or is there some kind of a hole with a hose? I'm assuming one of the biggest issues with the vent being exposed to the elements is dust and dirt build-up and then the AC does not drain properly. I know a 05 210 I'm looking to purchase has water stains, more than likely from the air conditioner pan overflowing. I've been doing a lot of research the past couple of days before I lay down any cash. I can definitely see where these rvs are money pits. Once again, you certainly did a great job and were very thorough in your replacement.
@averagealice8877Ай бұрын
Yes ours has been a "money pit" - but still after all the work and time invested we like it. You have to carefully weigh all the alternatives and their costs. Even new vans have issues but not as many as we've had. We've never had water draining inside the RV from the AC pan after doing our own install, AND always parking it level or sloping it toward the rear. (Maybe the previous owner of the one you're considering forgot that). Our AC just drains out under the grill on the back. Once a year we take off the roof panel and hose off the AC, and additionally I made a magnetic dust cover that goes over the rear grille while driving on dusty roads (for us, 60% of all driving). Water damage: our RT had tons of water damage originating from the rear window and we had to completely replace the bed platform which was rotted-out; also, all our windows are no longer being made so any window issues can be a major problem, ...the operator cranks are failing. Look carefully for water damage in these RV's but lots of times it can be fixed or the seals improved.
@TroyD-vo1bzАй бұрын
Thank you for the reply. There is a tiny bit of water damage up front which is stemming either from the skylights or the roof markers. From what I understand, the roof markers cracking is pretty common. 20 year old plastic dries out and then you've got heat from the lamp on the inside combined with cold on the outside then no doubt that stress can make the lens crack and then you've got water intrusion. I think skylight seals can be another problem. Unfortunately, I'm several thousand miles away from this van and just had a mechanic check it out. I found to get the best deal you really need to buy out of season when nobody else wants to buy RV's. And the end of the year is usually pretty good as the dealers know or the individuals know that the vehicle's going to depreciate another $4000 after the first of the year and they want to move it. Still, even an 05 is $30,000, and that's a cheap one. I've certainly seen them upwards of 40K. And buying an 08 or even a 2012 over an 05 doesn't seem to make that much of a difference . It's more about how well the person maintained it . I saw a 2012 out of Texas that had horrible clear coat peeling, the generator would not start, etc. This particular 05 I'm looking at has a very nice looking finish, And the generator does work as well as the cool cat, fridge, mcrowave and water pump all work. I think it has forty one hours on the generator. Overall pretty clean but it's got some water damage and it appears the furnace is not working. Cabinets are showing age, etc. but again, If something is really immaculate you can bet the persons asking 50K for it. Doing my best right now to read everything I can on potential problems and then how to fix them so I can decide if it's something I want to get into or not. I'm 63, so no spring chicken. There's still plenty of things I can do, but plenty of things I don't want to do ;) I'm sure you know what I mean.

Great video. Can you speak to any water intrusion from normal rain? My SO and I are comparing a pop up vs aliner. I like how easy the aliner is but you are paying a premium for limited space. My concern is it’s more expensive and don’t want to get caught up with having to repair water damage. Thank you!
@averagealice88772 ай бұрын
@@CroakerOutdoors We no longer have the Aliner but I can say that rain leaks can affect any rv/trailer unless you stay on top of them. Our Aliner had the Azdel panel ceiling which can’t be damaged by water, but the lower walls maybe had lauan. We had occasional issues in the corners in heavy rain but gorilla tape diverters worked ok. Fabric pop ups can be an issue in bear country.

We don't have the Aliner, but we had so many memorable trips in ours that we still look back on. It just took too much energy for us at our stage of life and we didn't adapt well to minimalist camping. I'll comment that the Aliner could get into a few places that our current RV/van can't handle! It was better going up a really steep hill (towing with the 4runner). But the Roadtrek also has gotten into some tighter/shorter places than the Aliner+car could manage. And the way we had our aliner LXE set up, we didn't really have a decent dinette. It was a hassle setting up the table (for us)

Grey water regulations are becoming more and more stringent, in New Zealand, you have to have a breather tube installed on the tank that finishes higher than your lowest outlet (usually the shower). These type of tutorials are much better when they are short and to the point. Overall very well done.

Glad you folks took some time to research, as you learned there's a world of difference when it comes to s SL/P to LT. Not to mention load range and tread pattern/type. In simple form, city/highway is quiet, a AT will have more noise and MT being a mud tire will howl. Your case use defines your tire. Keep in mind that every vehicle is like a can. Companies limit how much of noise reduction and insulation in them. Am also amused by folks spending tens of thousands of dollars on a vehicle as the like the color but do not realize how bad the paint job is. i.e. "orange peel" Just noticed it was a TRD, can't believe it had P tires on it as it should've came with AT's right from the lot when purchased.

35:05 I think your replacement job is great. But as you ponted out the electric connection, I wanted to note an easier fix for others, next time. Instead of going through the process of removing the GFC, it would have been easier to remove the cable at the A/C connectors. Buy the same cord but only a couple of feet longer. Then do as you did but this time take the new wire and feed it through the hole you drilled and run it over then in the A/C reconnecting it to the A/C. The other cheaper way, is to do as you did! But when you got the plug to the back of the A/C *YOU CUT IT!* Leaving about a foot of cord with the GFC plug. Then drill your hole, buy a couple of feet of the same electric cord. Use heat shrink tubing to connect each wire, to the GFC plug side then a larger 'same color' tubing can slide over it all. Then you thread the wire through the hole and connect it to the other end the same way, and the shrink wrap is water tight. Still very nice job, just trying to be helpful to others.
@rikcab7 ай бұрын
Oh, just one other remark... If and when you have a plug like you do, take the wire connect on the side of the A/C and turn the wire over connecting it closer to the plug. This will raise the pplug higher, so if water runs down the wires, it will drip where the wire turns upward to the plugs. But to be honest you really shouldn't have any water dripping down there and if there is a little, you did a great job sealing those plugs up! Again, just info... 👍👍 For your job!

16:55 Good info video.... Just a note, *be very careful handlying any capacitor!* They not only can hold a full charge but they can even build a static charge. Which can be very painful or even deadly. Always use a wooden handled wire brush, making contact with the terminals tol discharge the unit. Depending on the amount of volts, you may see a spark and a pop.

Living in a rural area on a two lane road, I have noticed an uptick of pickup trucks and SUVs that pass my house having very aggressive tires on them. Some of these vehicles can be heard("droning") coming from almost two miles away at 55-60 mph. These vehicles are louder than full length semis and most service trucks. It's an unfortunate amount of noise pollution that seems to go hand-in-hand with nearly as loud exhausts. For comparison, you can barley hear the "whoosh" of cars passing. I would be nice if AT and offload tires could be manufactured with quieter performance.
@averagealice88778 ай бұрын
Funny - We experience this exact situation near us after we moved to a more rural area. Some trucks don't even have a muffler it sounds like. One sounded like a semi and it turned out to be a truck! I believe noise is one of the most under-appreciated health hazards of modern society.

We just downsized to an Aliner after taking a Mini-Mate motorcycle trailer to Baja for two months and living with a tiny tent trailer. The size and tow vehicle requirements of our 25 ft Microlite was an obstacle. Our tow truck is an 06 with 180k miles. Have you priced trucks lately? We towed our Mini-Mate with our Subaru for two months. Our LXE has many more creature comforts than the tiny tent trailer. One hint. Put a little dehumidifier in your trailer. Things will dry quicker.

A regular window unit will NOT work in the Roadtrek. A "Through-the-Wall A/C is required. This is why Average Alice has had 2 failures, 3rd coming up soon, no doubt. The cooling vents can Not be on the side of the a/c. in Roadtrek. A "Wall Unit" vents intake/outflow just like roadtrek is designed; to the back, not sides. Sadly, the "Wall" units are double the price of the cheap window units. Wall unit vs. Window unit, which do you want to have? in the desert?

4:00 in you compare burying grease to human bathroom waste. Just thought it important to share you CAN NOT bury human waste in desert or Alpine areas no matter what. They require a pack out. Other places have other rules but remember how many people go to those areas and how destroyed it will be if everyone leaves their week of black water there. Other than that thanks for the video was looking for a good temp grey solution
@averagealice88772 жыл бұрын
Look up "Sequoia National Forest Dispersed Camping Rules". ." Bury human waste at least six inches deep and 200 feet from any waterway or trail. DO NOT bury toilet paper-PACK IT OUT" (direct quote). I'm not suggesting people dump their RV black tanks anywhere other than an approved dump station. That's a whole different volume of waste than I'm talking about here. Some forests do require pack out like the trail to Mount Whitney but many do not, for dispersed camping outside of established campgrounds.

I know this is 4 years old. But I bet most of the hot air is going up to the ceiling and you need to somehow bring that down to your sleeping area. I use a camco wave3 inside my teardrop and we can keep it on mid 60s inside while it is 20 degrees outside. This is with the heater running on low. So I am sure on high we could go camping on even colder weather. However, my trailer is tiny. The cabin is 5x8 and the ceiling is right there. You can't stand on it. So I am sure that helps a lot. I've been camping for a long time including backpacking where heaters are just not a possibility. I have learned that small tents (short) and trailers are way more practical unless you have a powerful source of electricity.
@Dumbass_mechanic2 жыл бұрын
The original tires are HT, that stands for highway tread. You buy a car that says off road on the side of it, then take it off road, and wonder why the tires get cut? They shouldn't have put ht tires on to begin with. The inflation pressure depends on the weight of the vehicle, and with an E tire can be correct as low as 25 psi depending on your truck. The lower the inflation the smoother the ride, but the worse its going to handle, plus it isn't going to roll as easily which kills your fuel mileage. The higher the inflation the worse the ride gets, and if you go too high your truck will bounce around like a basketball.

Before and after video is the tell tale! Coming from Bridgestone Duelers on my Lexus LC570 (basically a land cruiser) and going to Toyo Open Country AT3's. Duelers weren't super quiet as they were worn out. I was expecting fairly quiet ride from the Toyo AT3's. Surprising to me, over 40mph, they have a light roar. The reason this surprised me was that my wife's 4runner was only slightly noisier with the previous version AT2's over all season tire. I'm getting the option of switching tires (Toyo satisfaction guarantee) and this makes me want to try the Ridge Grapplers or possibly the Recon Grappler. Your video - it's almost like the Ridge Grapplers are even quieter than the Bridgestones. How is your satisfaction to date? Edit: I see this is 4 years old now. Did your opinion chance? Did you rebuy the same tire next time? Thank you for the video!
@averagealice88772 жыл бұрын
We did re-buy these tires on our heavier RV (belts separated around 30k miles) because we thought we might have overloaded the RV and caused the separation. We also have them on our 4Runner. They did get noisier as we added more miles but not enough to be an issue. I have no experience with ko2s or other all terrain tires - just full disclosure.

@@averagealice8877 really appreciate your follow up! I have the KO2's on my 3500 (have a truck camper we run on this) and that ties have been great. My tire store, local guys I grew up with have explained to me that the quality since 2019 had slipped on the KO2's specifically and have dissuaded me from ordering them. Otherwise I would've gotten KO2's again for the quiet ride. I like the Toyo/Nitto brands just fine so just trying to drill down options.
