Fisher 30 Ep 24 - It is raining fibreglass dust - angle grinding in freezing temperatures.

I bought a 1976 Fisher 30 Northeaster motorsailer in great need of "some" TLC.
In this video I angle-grind massively inside the boat as it is necessary to complete the grinding task in a few weeks, to be able to clean the boat for dust.

If you close the air intake manifold and exhaust and the fuel line to the fuelpump there can't get anything wrong with you're engine. It's a diesel and not a petrol engine. You can even run a diesel engine under water with the air intake above the water so don't worry if it is getting dirty, I have seen diesel engines so full of mud and dirt that I could not see if it was an engine so don't worry. Love your channel and always looking forward for the next episode. Greetings from the Netherlands.

I wouldn't worry about the engine much. Everything will be cleaned within an inch of it's life at some point, anyway. A plastic sheet over it, with a rope around the bottom is all it ever needed. When you think about how engines work.. all the seals that keep the fluids in, keep the dust and dirt out. So if the air intake,exhaust and fuel lines are sealed up... you can take a hose to the rest.

Thanks Helge for another film. You must love your boat so much for the dedication you are showing. Highly commendable. I lived on a steel boat on the River Thames for 9 years and my neighbour, also on a steel hull fitted out his boat and had insulation sprayed on. It's so important not to have gaps between hull and insulation, because of condensation. Oh and don't go pondering life etc, you'll never crack it! All the best.

Helge, Another great video. I've come to look forward to seeing each new one. Your humour and humility are always appreciated. You're bringing new meaning to the old expression "back to the daily grind". I've never used Divincell myself but do know it is widely used to replace wood for coring hulls and decks on boats using vacuum bagging. It is also my understanding that there are several versions depending on the application (i.e deck, hull, bulkhead etc). As for the car repair, I say stick with Duct tape but maybe in a matching colour for your car. 😄

I think you are doing great! I know nothing about that insulation you are going to use. Bulkheads add a tremendous amount of strength to the hull. Build them STRONG and you will be glad you did. Now is a good time to plan the handholds you will use moving through the boat when you are underway.
@hsobstad

Great video as always. As to the blue insulation, while it isn’t Divincel (sic), it certainly looks to be decent enough insulation to prevent condensation on exposed surfaces of the fisher. Only the horizontal areas (the decks) have any insulation right now, and every bit helps. I used a half inch closed cell foam on mine and it made a big difference. Just stick it on well.

If you want to insulate the inside...use armaflex. It sticks well and does not deteriorate. I used the 13 mm version. Between the armaflex and the inside panelling, I used sheep wool. That makes a boat smell really well, and it keeps the boat dry by absorbing the moisture and still insulate.

Hello, Helge! I've been thinking about something. you've removed all the bulkheads and rotted hull layers, maybe you should think about strengthening the base of the mast? before continuing further. you may need an additional vertical support for the installation of the mast on the roof
@hsobstad
@hsobstad 8 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Previously the wall I tore down in this video was that base for the mast. I will move the wall a bit further towards the stern and might make a separate support for the mast. The base underneath is dead solid as it is one piece of solid iron ballast.

@@hsobstad We have two stainless steel posts under the mast. My understanding is that the original Fisher construction didn't really support the mast enough. One of the other channels that I follow, Travels with Geordie www.youtube.com/@TravelsWithGeordie Peter is fixing up an old wooden boat, well 3 wooden boats right now. At the end of every episode he does a Beer of the Week. After all of your hard work maybe you should think of doing something like that to celebrate what you accomplished during the week. Hi there! I have spent untill 3am o' clock to watch all your videos in a row! You're doing a hell (litterally!) of a job! It will become the best Fisher 30' floating, even better than out of the yard! I was wondering, since you have moved the engine backward some 20 centimeters, what about the shaft? Aro you going to cut it? Since you cannot move back the propeller so far back... Also: in a big yacht (in 1990) we have used sprayed poliuretanic foam on the hull to insulate it and it worked very well. Maybe nowadays it is an oldfashion way to insulate hulls...but it worked well and it was easy and quick to spray. I'm seeking a Fisher 25 or 30 to go around the globe...but after I saw your videos, I'm scared of what I can find under the ceilings even if it has been well mantained... I might invite you and your family in Italy to survey the boat I'm looking these days...it's a 30' one owner since 1972 (he is 90 now!) but the engine is 51 years old (volvo penta 3 cylinders) and even if the boat seems very well mantained, after your videos I'm not sure "well maintaining it" is enogh. Anyway I will follow you in your effort and I'm very interested in your new interior plans, even if in Mediterranean we might have less weather issues than in Norway... Congratulations! You've surely a Viking Blood heritage! Blessings!max:-)
@hsobstad
@hsobstad 7 ай бұрын
Hi Max. Thanks for your kind feedback. Re. the engine, I decided on not to move it backwards. Sorry if I was unclear on that issue. I surely will insulate the boat. Some of the older foams had a tendency to soak with any water that found its way to the foam. I will use Armaflex or similar, with closed cells. Buying a boat (any boat) will produce trouble. That is (I guess) what boating is all about; maintaining it. Even a new boat can make issues. Buying a middel-old (10-20 years) might seems okay but might also be that issues are imminent but you pay a price indicating they (the issues) are not on its way. The good thing about Fishers and some other brands is they are built solid. But it does not make them maintenance free. The Fisher 30 you are to survey might be in good shape, but not free of issues (of course). You are not paying anything for the old engine I guess. The old Volvos are great engines (I have heard), but it is the heart of the boat so I do recommend to change it to a new one. Best would be a naturally aspirated 3 or 4 sylinder, about 50 hp. (the old Volvo is a bit underpowered with 35 hp). I would love to come to Italy but that is unfortunately not possible for me as I have responsibilities on a daily basis. But there are lots of good surveiers out there. Let me know if you buy the Fisher, please. BTW. There are a Fisher owners association that has a lot of technical answers and members that provide lots of tips on any questions regarding Fisher-boats. Best of luck! Helge :-)
@MrClownPower
@MrClownPower 7 ай бұрын
@@hsobstad Sure I know about the Association...my invitation was to spend some time in ITaly (we have better weather than Norway🙂) and the survey was an excuse...sorry you cannot accept...who knows, perhaps in the future, you and your family will be always welcome! Yes...english describe a boat as a "hole in the water in which you strip and throw thousands of pounds" and yes, I've been sailing since I was a kid (and I'm not a kid now!) and I know how demanding and challenging is to own and keep a yacht (especially sailing!) and when someone decides to face issues as you do, it's a kind of nightmare! 🙂 I'll follow you through the deserved conclusion and I look forward to see you and you dears happily sailing in your marvellous seas! BTW two things: 1) althoug Armaflex looks a great modern material for insulation, it seems a little thin to insulate your temperatures and I have to admit that poliuretanic foam did not absorbed any moisture and kept the interiore REALLY fresh in the 5 years I have managed the boat wich hull was painted dark blue and in the Mediterranean coud reach 80° C! (some days untouchable!) 2) I have finished my interiors with thin (1 mm) marine plywood sheets, rather than that white glued material for interiors and I found it easyer to apply, mantain, varnish and take away for cabling survey... I'm sure you know what you want to do with your interiors...only a feedback, not a suggestion. Hugs&blessings!max🙂

@@MrClownPower Thanks again, for inviting me (and my family) and sorry we cannot act on your kind invitation. We have actually visited Italy (quite a few years ago) and spent a wonderful week in Tuscany. We rented a car at the airport outside Rome (Fiumicino), spent a day in Rome and the headed to a small town (which I do not remember the name of) and with a friend who is German with an Italian father, we rented a house on a hill. So I did´nt get the fact that you are a WAY more experienced sailer than I am. Then I have nothing to teach you I guess 🙂 Re. Armaflex: The biggest problem during winter is not really to keep the heat but rather to keep the boat dry. The moisture in the air inside will condense on all the surfaces that are cold. But a bit of armaflex or something similar makes a difference. I guess it is easier to keep the boat warm (and dry) in cold weather (engine heater/diesel heater) than to keep the boat cold in hot weather (airconditioning draws quite a lot of electrical power while heating does not). I like your input on the interior plywood sheets. I have not decided on that stuff yet as it is still a way to go. I am thinking about making a design that is easy to make and just works, sort of like a work-boat. I dont need a boat with lots of interior details that has no purpose other than to look expensive. It should be solid and nautical. I am glad you made contact. Helge

Couldn't some of that dust you are accumulating could be used to mix into new batches of resin and repurposed ?
@hsobstad

Yes it could. However it does consist of different materials; epoxy, gelcoat, polyester, polyurethan, unspecified glue and probably some single component paint. I am a bit sceptical to mix that into a fresh mix of epoxy. All hell could break loose (maybe not that bad)...

Ah Helge ! We know you too well. You will strip your car back to the chassis, repair the car and the duck tape will be gone. Who needs sleep when a boat and a car need repairing?

Haha.. The insurance company will pay for the fix. Delivered the car to the workshop this morning. :-)

Just depends. If you're OK driving a car that looks like junk, stay with the duct tape.

I actually could do that. But it is better for safety if it is repaired. Delivered it to the workshop this morning :-)
