Fisher 30 Ep 23 - My other boat - the Rhea 900 - and more.

I bought a 1976 Fisher 30 Northeaster motorsailer in great need of "some" TLC.
Last year I did a lot on the exterior. Now it is mostly the interior. In this video I angle-grind a lot inside the boat (but no long and boring scenes), due to cold weather, trying to get a heat source to warm up the boat and balancing boatwork with other duties. Also introducing the Rhea 900 (my other boat).

Thanks. I do try to protect myself well. Some dust will find its way in, but not in any harmful amounts. It is not like asbestos...

Hi Helge, enjoyed the video, appreciate your humor and the “slice of life” beyond the Fisher renovation… this suggestion may be more trouble than it is worth, perhaps use rock wool or fiberglass insulation stuffed in trash bags or sling some painting tarps to ceiling and stuff it with insulation… basically retain as much heat as possible by “walling” off the area of work rather than trying to heat the entire boat … here in the states they sell a thick hard foam board that may work as a movable bulkhead to help isolate areas of the boat

Hi Ric. Thanks for watching (and enjoying) the video, and for supplying ideas. Your suggestion is smart, at least for insulating the roof/ceiling and having an electrical oven underneath. I might then change the rotten plywood. It is of lesser value insulating the lower hull from the outside. It will then need something to rest upon, while being held up to the hull. The foam will probably do the same job as the 22mm plywood I have already bought. :-)

Hi Helge, I find very interesting the dry room, very useful and understand perfectly the use. I Would locate it close to a heat producer, either the proper heat bomb or the engine room. Very nice work!!

Hi Helge!!! You've been holding out on us ... that Rhea is really a nice boat! As for the heating dilemma ... I think that the supplementing the diesel heater with an electrical heater at night would be the best solution -- especially if you are going to use polyester resin. I have a similar propane heater for my shop (slightly larger in output), and I can only run it for short periods to heat up the shop before the fumes get noticeable, not to mention the moisture that it introduces to the environment -- terrible for the tools. With all of that grinding, I hope that you have covered the engine thoroughly -- that dust can work its way into small areas and cause major problems down the road. You are doing the right thing with all of the grinding -- you will get a solid bond when tabbing in the new structures and bulkheads. Keep up the great work!!!

Hi Robert! Yes, I must get the diesel heater to run. I can run electric at night, but not use too much of electricity. I am sharing with all others in the yard. I have not really done anything to protect the engine. Not smart of me....

I would definitely stop to address the dust issue with the engine before going any further ... if i might make a suggestion ... once you have it vacuumed clean, get some shrink wrap that is used to wrap up pallets for shipping. Wrap the engine up with a heavy quilted moving style blanket, and then use the shrink wrap to completely enclose the engine in a cocoon of plastic to seal it from ingress of the dust.@@hsobstad

Hi Helge! another great video. Thank you for sharing with us. All of your hard work will be worth it when you re-launch your Fisher. The satisfaction of knowing everything is done right is very comforting when sailing offshore. I think your idea of a heated shower room that can be used to dry clothes is excellent. One thing you could do is use an accordion door as the divider which would really open it up inside. Especially if I ever came to visit and needed to use the head on your boat. The problem is that at 1,93m and 121 kg, only 1/2 my ass would fit into the toilet side based on your current layout. 🤣

Doing a grand job, may I suggest under Floor heating for drying room uses very little power, can keep on even in doc as no gas or flame 🔥

H. Your explanation is very clear and sensible. Not, as you said, immediately understood here in California. A Midships head and shower is unusual, and because of the airflow, I wonder if putting the wet room in the stern compartment, along with 1 quarter berth might not make sense ? This keeps all the wet clothes/ people from moving into the main part of the boat, and lets the damp air exhaust out the back.. so warm air moves through the boat from front to rear, and then out. The head can then be anywhere you like, always dry and cozy. Another question.. do you have the same 9.5 foot (3 meter) beam as my 30 did, or the wider 11 Foot beam ?

There is unfortunately not enough standing height (and space) in the aft cabin to have a shower/wet room. The Northeaster have the wider beam hull.

How about webasto for heating the Fisher? I mean not just now, but for perspective like one of sistems of the boat. I think this system solve the problem with wet clothes.

Why don't you use a lot burning stove to heat the boat!! You could use the inside of the boat rotten timbers to feed the fire, or you could do as the genius's in the UK do and use solar and wind this works very well in the dark with no wind

We use 5/8 copper pipe for water supplies in USA.

5/8 pipe? That is quite small. At least for this house. I had a 1 inch copper pipe. Changed to 40mm (1.6 inch) plastic pipe. Also at the same time put down a 63mm (2.5 inch) plastic pipe for possible future connection for a sprinkler system (this house is quite old and therefore a cultural building).

I think you are getting into your stride very well with the videos Helge. A great balance of content - varied and interesting. Loved the summer/boat house, the fuel hungry boat and the works at the house too. I do not envy the grinding sessions - I will be pleased for you when you have completed that task.😀👍⛵️
