He never knew he was gifted the golden voice. He sat back while levon sang. You can't blame him.

Until I heard and saw this version, I had always thought that Ray Charles's performance was definitive. Richard Manuel's, however, is so soulful and heartfelt, and all the more authentic when you learn about his tragic end.

I'm so glad that I got to see Rick in a really intimate setting, a solo performance in a really small coffeeshop called the Rose Tattoo Cafe in Philadelphia in the early 1990s. I even got to talk to him after the show and get his autograph. I don't remember what he played, but it was probably a lot of the songs he played on here because it was right around the same time. RIP.

Met him twice. Sundowner Club in Norman. Then at the Onyx Club in OKC. We made recordings thanks Beas, still listen to them. This group later the Band was much better as the Hawks. The soul of the entire group is unmatched. Rich nailed Ray and put that Canadian spin on it.

This is what Robertson said about this song: “There was this guy, “Cowboy” Dan Johnson, who had worked for Scorsese for about five years and he’d worked for me at one time too. He was a strange combination of characters. He was from Kentucky, he’d been on the front line at ‘Nam, he was an excellent chef - you’d never guess it, ’cause he was a big brute. Anyway, I was in New York, working with Marty, and when I was leaving, this guy, Dan, asked if he could catch a ride up town with me. So he came and we decided to go into this bar and have a couple of beers. We talked for a few minutes. Then I drove him back to his place, I went to my hotel. The next day, I got a call and was told that Dan had died. He died of acute meningitis of the brain. There was no scandal. Here was a guy who just went home and died. It was so devastating to me and Marty. It just blew us apart. We talked about it and thought it would be a nice thing to write a song in memory of Dan. So I ended up doing that, instead of another one I’d originally done. So ‘Between Trains’ was about Dan and for him.

Yeah. Very compelling vocalist and musician. People don't realize that when you're on the road all the time, you do not have much of a life outside of playing the gig. If you don't have other outside interests or motivations, it is easy to fall into drugs because they are usually always available. Also the music business is as nasty as any other business with the added caveat that it is easy to let or affect your ego.
