Is it customary to not build out a town/port/nondungeon with miniatures? I think the answer is yes mostly due to townsfolk population, but wanted to get a sense from more experienced players. How do you deal with shapeshifting (like polymorph or wildshape) where the GM does not have a 1-to-1 miniature for that? Do you just use the same token and pretend? Swap in whatever would be closest? A piece of paper possibly with a doodle? Something else? Amazing DM screen. Reminds me that I must start writing down more notes in the moment as my memory is less than immaculate half an hour later. Thank you for the tour!

@angelojohnson9441 Good Question. Would you like us to do an episode on this? Or, Answer it here? We will be happy to answer that for you Thanks about eh screen. I know about the memory. I used to know all the books inside and out and exactly were to find stuff, and all the rules. Now, I cannot. Age? Life? My RL job I feel like a neuro Surgeon that every day the job and what I have to do and remember changes, so it is impossible to keep up with it. So what I remember is what is most important. Job, or Fun? I do as much as I can for fun, but the job is what allows me to have fun.

I’ve had the core book for awhile, but no one wants to run it, so I ‘reckon I’ve got to do it myself. 🤠 Got the Shootist’s guide and once I’ve got the rules down pat I’ll try a module to gauge our interest. Rolling up a character is hilarious with the sibling tables - I had seven brothers and sisters, but only one actually lived. 😄

@rascally_ryan Thanks for the comment. The sibling table is actually quite realistic when you get to it. Many families lost children in those days. Infant mortality was high. It's a run game. When I ran it, it was all my own stuff, but in the town of Lazerus which is a map in the book. Hope you get to play it

luv it, i always get players to describe in details what they are doing, check for trap on a door...ok so describe how you are donig that and what parts of the door you are inspecting... and then i roll 1d6 and if i get a 1 there is a trap and i give them hints like... ok you notice the door was tampered with.... if i dont roll a 1 or 6 then i just say ok you dont find anything. same goes for searching a room or any item or corpse or dungeon walls and floors etc. give a better atmosphere to let the imagination blossom. cheers gang another good vid. On the topic of AI music: You already have intro music, what would you want AI music for? Are talking about while you are talking? If so: -I guess. I mean it is your channel. Just remember to keep it lower volume and/or simplistic; more ambience than “live jazz band playing a dance number in the board room” -Since low volume and simplistic is the lean for these things, dabbling in free music software might be the way to go, creating it yourself. -Legally, you might also want to steer clear of AI for now, because technically no one owns it. So if word gets out (as of now) that your song is AI, someone else could use it in their videos about TTRPGs, or something odd like “grading canned soups by sticking my feet in a warm bowl of them”. On the legal flipside of this, there a bunch of AI music artists already on KZbin that do have “if you use this, please just credit me”. As well as loads of public domain music. Onto the Pixel Dice: -I kind of hope the sayings are only customizable to a point, because the last thing I would want is a power gamer having their dice say “Nat 20” when rolling a 20,1,3, and 5. This however could be controlled a little better if the dice is synced to the GM’s device, because then the GM can eradicate people lying about the dice rolls since the phone can track the rolls of multiple dice. -Another thing is that this does really open up the in-person experience for blind people. I’m sure there are braille dice, but I would assume they would have to be bigger, and also I have no immediate idea how big a braille D4 would need to be, but I would assume well beyond the size of a D100. As far as with digital, I have known my playgroup as friend for well over a decade, and while we meet via Teams, we roll at our own perspective tables with our own dice. We do this for two reasons: half the group is tech avoidant so learning a game client is unlikely homework for them and there is a sort of “handing your [character’s] fate to the computer” mentality that we’ll avoid as long as we can. I loved the Pyrate short! Remember: home made art is typically made with care. It does not take skill or much knowledge to copy+paste a bunch of stuff online. I mean, I’ve seen some AI videos, 5+ minutes run time and you gain nothing. Your mood doesn’t change, you learned nothing, you have no connection with the creator. On the flip side, sure a 30+ minute on the history of goblins in a card game will probably not do much for me in the real world, but the creator was passionate about it and talked about how the different goblins from different realms all fell into that “goblin” designation even when the physical differences were like comparing a lounge chair to bar stool, people still understand “I can sit on either [of these pieces of furniture]” I know enough about claymation to know it takes a long time but it will make you stand out in this day and age, if you have the time to do it, especially in this age of AI and photoshop. Gen Z is going for more retro things anyway, so it might help get some of that demographic, since BabyBoomers, Gen X, and early Millennials will have already encountered claymation, but Gen Z and later Millennials could see it as a retro aspect to which they’ve had little exposure, and that avenue is an open door to lead them to your channel. At least that’s my opinion. That is what the brunt of this comment is. In the end it is your choice for your channel, not mine. And it is your opinion that should be the final arbiter for your channel. See you next video!

@angelojohnson9441 Thank you for that very in-depth post and analysis. AI-music - Just something we are toying with. Tom asked if it could be done, and I was like yeah, no issue. It was coming up with exactly what he wanted that is harder. AI is not the beat all end all and it is limited, but fun to play with. AI Movie... I've toyed with it, but I am not a fan of it. So what do we do? I have ideas for a live action intro filmed at a real castle made all by one man not to far from where we live. But this requires help, help, I am not sure I will get to do it. but maybe. What ever we do, it cannot be long. The Pyrate Round Intro was a bit long, but we loved it, and stayed with it. We had a tone of fun doing that over a day of filming. I'd love to do another, but the Claymation we did, was about as detailed as we wanted to get, and we had ships. Although, we had planned on re-shooting it with other ships, and never did. I had spent a day making the white whale and looking at Sperm Whales, and then squid, and making all the different arms needed. We ended up cutting out some, and redoing some. Glad you liked that segment that we added (Bonus reels). The Dice... Yes, someone could program it to say Nat 20 even on a one. But I think if every one at a table started to hear it roll Nat 20 on every roll, people would get suspicious. On our game sessions last night, Tom had his phone pointed to were others could see it. I know some are also using it in I think Roll 20, but not sure. Yes, it could help with people who are blind, or have a hard time seeing their dice. We had a player that could never read her dice, on a phone it could be big so she could see those. I've thought about brail dice. I have 2 sister-in-laws and 1 brother-in-law who are blind and read brail. Tom is even familiar in some regards to it as his sisters and brother are all blind. The dice will get more features added. I found they are working on having different voices for the dive to use Thank you again for the post.

Final Fantasy actually hits on this well in 7&8s original release. In 8, Ward loses his voice, but through gestures and other NPCs narrating smaller actions (since graphics weren’t capable of that so early on without a cutscene) he had a clear personality and his motives and methods were clear. Barret Wallace of Final Fantasy 7 has a gun on his arm instead of a hand. The game tells you how it occurs, but most people playing the game would not classify him as “handicapped” because he is that capable. He is strong enough to climb with one hand and his grip with said hand means the average antagonist could not overpower something from his grasp. As far as GMing, one of my players is a merfolk. She can shift between legs and fin, but has a “fishbowl buggy” built by the artificer in the group that travels at her move speed. Only once so far in over 10 sessions did the buggy become an issue: they ventured into a cave to save a girl from the denizens and the girl had a way to crawl out, which would make the opening tight for the full grown adventurers, but really impossible for the buggy to get out that way without first enlarging the hole (because otherwise they would have seen an entrance that wide as they cased the cave exterior). What happened next was a frantic series of dice rolls to see if they could open the passage wide enough to get the buggy through before said denizens realized what they were doing and tried to go through the passage AND THEN to see if they could CLOSE that passage before the denizens came through it after them. The idea was to make them go back later to deal with the denizens for good if the buggy had to be temporarily abandoned, but never to penalize them for extra gear that gave no in game bonus. Also, I’m not a monster, I wouldn’t kill off the sea turtle pet that also lived in the buggy bowl. Later in the campaign, I have a monastery where a blind monk is being held captive by a vengeful air elemental. Having been raised at the monastery, the monk knows the layout and due to having to rely on other senses, can sense air discrepancies and thus sense the elemental better than most, as well as hearing would-be assailants. I guess you can just assume he is the monk version of Daredevil, who is also a good example of someone differently abled in sci-fantasy.

Hi. I'm autistic so it can be very hard for me to roleplay characters who aren't. NPCs are easier than PCs because they're often one dimensional plot points with a predetermined personality. Though I've never made autism a specific beat of any of my characters it's hard to stop my personal thought processes from influencing how a character behaves. So it comes down to basically all my characters being autistic too because i don't really know how an authentic allistic character would behave. This usually has very little effect on any gaming though. It's more background character fluff. It does effect my GMing though. I have to be careful about how I leave hints or hooks, how i do puzzles or red herrings. Autistic and allistic minds often pick up or see importance in different things. TTRPGs have always been a place where outsiders can go to roleplay being superheros. Where people who are pushed out of society can escape and become something else. Or be themselves in an environment that doesn't punish them for it. And it's that sentence that i think is a key one in any of these discussions. It's why i think having disabilities in TTRPGs is fine. Whatever the disability is once the player and GM together iron out how it will work in game then it's no more of an issue than classes. Sometimes players want their characters to reflect themselves, sometimes they have little choice like I said about myself earlier. Sometimes players want their characters to be something they could never be. Is there really that much difference in game between those two? I don't think so.

I think the issue of the handicapped character should rest squarely on the shoulders of the player, the one that wants to play said character. 🥳🫂👍🏿 There is an interesting tendency when talking about people who cannot walk or hear or have any other physical disability from a non-disabled perspective - they hypothesize what those people would want to fantasize about without any personal insight into those communities and as tho they are homogenous - some people want to imagine themselves without and some with, and that preference can change from game to game - the right way to approach it is what you closed with: ask

dnd is a hero based wargame. we understood that in the 80's and 90's. i have seen people playing 5e that have never run combat. they literally playing real life as commoners in dnd. they all use those consent forms and can not separate real life vs make believe violence, war or other bad things. somehow fantasy make believe hurts them the same as real world trauma. 9:40 blood issues - my dad was one of those people that in real life fainted at blood but in game he knew it was make believe in his imagination and could play a barbarian warrior that ripped monsters apart and bathed in blood for his war god. it allowed him the freedom to do things he could never do in real life. separation of real and imagination is a very important thing to have.

Having DMed both euphemisms and having characters roll for grapple checks as well as literally just saying “and fade to black” I think everyone at the table preferred “fade to black. I feel like it is difficult to not have some semblance of fantasy-racism if the “big conflict” is war or an invading kingdom, as it sort of falls under propaganda, like how Tolkien has a default of “all Orcs are evil” or even how the player’s handbook pointing out how certain fantasy-races/species react with one another. If you are talking about bringing real-world style racism in, I feel like it would be forced if you have the other fantasy-races coexisting in the same space, especially if it is not rooted in nationalism between two [priorly] warring nations. A human having the sentiment of “I trust this hundreds of years old elf, this dragonborn, this goblin, and this hill giant with whom I’ve had no interaction solely due to the color of your skin. It isn’t that I think you are a changeling or possessed either” to me would be a leap that breaks immersion.

Before I get too far in the video, I added a system to my table called the defense matrix. It goes Armor Class -> Glancing Hit -> Armor Reduction -> Immunities/Resistances/vulnerabilities. AC is still the standard hit or miss, Glancing blows is a range above your AC determined by your armor where damage is halved, Armor Reduction is the amount that incoming damage is reduced by, and I,R,V is as it usually is; lastly crits bypass everything except I,R,V. All this together gives a mechanical play experience where you need to hit someone wearing full plate really hard or in the right spot to deal damage through the armor, or you can get lucky with a crit and deal max damage as if you found a gap like the eye slit with your dagger. Armor categories determine your AC formula and the armors themselves give your Armor Score which determines your Glancing Blow Range and Armor Reduction. Full plate would have an AS of 5 and heavy armor would have an AC formula of 11 + Prof Bon + Dex Mod (Max 0). So a lvl 4 fighter with a shield and full plate would have an AC of 15, GR of 20, and AR of 5. Assuming a monster had a +5 to hit, they’d miss on 1-9, need to deal 12 damage on a 10-14, need to deal 6 damage on a 15-19, and crit on a 20. This would overall make fights less of a yo-yo but still allow there to be big moments that can turn a fight

@fartymcbutterpants7063 Thank you for the comment. If as person wants to pay, that is there choice. But lets be honest, that adds up. It's like having to pay for more DLC for a PC game and you get a few more hours of fun. People will do it. As for finding groups to play with? I disagree. I know people who do pay to play and yet, they could have a local game but choose not to. The convenience of staying home, avoiding people, not making solid connections with people. I also know plenty of DM's who do not charge 1 penny for games. It is the pay to play I do not get. It's the paying $20+ a session to play, every week in a game that will last years. That adds up. That's money I would rather spend on other things. But that is myself. To each their own and how they spend their money, as long as they are not hurting anyone one stealing from someone to do it.

Interesting talk - A few comments - I often play online, with a regular game having people from Australia, the UK and Canada. It's great and much easier for me to work into my schedule than face to face. Charging for games - haven't done that (yet?), but if you are saying 'don't charge for something that is fun', then I am out of a job. I have fun at work... I wouldn't have an issue with a GM charging. I spend two to three hours prepping for a three hour session. It's something players value. I also pay for Zoom, foundry... I don't charge but can understand why people do. Not at DnD in a castle level, mind you. As for trolling or diminishing players , I have not experienced it, but would definitely not tolerate it either, f2f or online, even in random con games.

@raldanash_rpg Thank you for the post Yes, the great thing about online gaming is you get to play world wide. I have done that in a 7th Sea online game which was fun. Nope, not saying don't charge, I just would not do it, and prefer not to have to pay to play. Only did that in my 5E games I played, and it got pricy using free apps even for the DM. I can understand if you have to keep buying software. But I think if I had to buy software to DM, I'd find a different game to play (Well at least not pass it down to my players, once again, that is just me). Yeah, D&D in a castle, sounds like fun. But I'd rather take that money and tour castles for the same price or less. But to each their own. Glad to hear, you have not ran into diminishing players. That is never a good thing

We would love to all be in person but some players live up to an hour or more away from me. i also run ethernet cable for 2 of the computers so we dont have issues with wifi crapping out. @RIVERSRPGChannel Thanks for the comment. WAY Back in the day, we had 12 players (I have DM'd for as many as 15 in further back in the day), most all at one time. It was a crowded table, but fun. Now we are lucky to have the 4 we have. Even the online games, we are lucky to have 4, 5 if we are lucky. Yes, the commute home is great online LOL

I don’t think I would particularly care about someone’s backstory and whether or not they have one in a module and definitely not in a one shot. I think if you’re running a homebrew, that isn’t a one shot, however it will most likely matter. At the same time, I dislike when, just like when people pick one alignment and then act another, they say something in their backstory, which does not follow how they perceive themselves in game. For example: “My sister stabbed me in the back and pushed me off a cliff almost killing me, so I dragged myself out of the chasm and brought her to justice thus why I don’t trust people easily” and then when an NPC says they lost 30 sheep all at once to a monster in a cave that is in a far and secluded area, but that NPC will lead the party there, they do not question the NPC’s motives.

@angelojohnson9441 thank you for the comment. I agree. A one shot or simple module, nope, not needed. And yes, your example is spot on

21:24 He means Actions here when he says Rounds... Some spells exist over multiple rounds but you have to sustain it for 1 action. So you can sustain a conjuration (Fire elemental) for 1 Action (Fire elemental then gets 2 actions for you to use with it) then Cast a Fireball for 2 Actions = 3 actions

16:38 More than you think, If you Critical Succeed or Critically Failure what acually happens on a nat 1 or nat 20 is the your result shifts up or down a Degree of Success. Now "usually" this does result in what you expect, a Critical Success IS a Critical Success and a Critical Failure IS a Critical Failure. *But what happens if you have a high weapon or skill (Level 11) and you nat 1 a Goblin?* AC:11 You roll a nat 1 + Strike (+21) = 22 Hit Now, a 22 hit against a AC:11 would be a Critical Hit! (10+ over AC) but, you rolled a Nat 1 so the result has to "shift" down to a success. You still managed to hit it because your skill is so high. *The opposite is also true.* AC:33 You roll a nat 20 + Strike (+2) = 22 Hit This is a Critical Miss! (10 under AC) BUT! its a nat 20 so that Critical Miss Becomes only a failure (shifts up one), you didnt hit, but you still have all your limbs at least.... *OR* AC:33 You roll a nat 20 + Strike (+5) = 25 Hit This is a Miss! You rolled a Nat 20 so... its a HIT! (not a critical But a hit) Thing to remember Nat 1s and Nat 20s move the degree of success up or down depending, they dont CHANGE it to a Crit Failure or Crit Success This doesnt happen often but it does happen. If it is happening a lot, your GM is gonna have to have a good hard look at his game. (DCs (a AC IS considered a DC) are either all too high or Too Low) See 2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=2286&Redirected=1

10:28 A Lot of GMs now play with the optional rule "Free Archetype". An Class Archetype (There are Organizational Archetypes too (guilds/groups)) is a how PF2e does Multiclass (for most people, there is Dual classing but no one does that). Its gives you a taste of another class. You can be a Fighter with a Sorcerer Archetype and can now cast shield. But 85% of your character is still fighter. Usually you have to give up you Class Feat you gain every 2nd level if you want to develop your Archetype. The FREE rule doesnt have this stipulation. GMs be careful, CLASS Archetypes can allow for much more powerful characters but MY GOD the options!

The New Edition of Pathfinder is known in the community as "Remaster", So if people see others refering to "The Remaster", they are talking about the latest version. A lot of the changes in the latest edition is stripping out any WOTC stuff. Pazio (for reasons...) wanted to pull away from WOTC D&D all together and remove or changed a lot of stuff that also occured in D&D. Good you have the latest edition as well because it also has the erratas in it. So if something doesnt make sense see what it says in the latest edition

Calling the Remaster Core "Third Edition" is incredibly misleading. PF2 and PF2r are the exact same game. PF2r incorporates the errata accumulated since the 2019 release of the game, cuts off the vestigial OGL content and removes unnecessary details from the characters sheet. I certainly wouldn't say that building a character in PF2 is more complicated than building a PF1 character. Yes there are a lot options to select from, but there is far less calculation required. It's a depth of options, not a depth of complexity.

@matthewblanchard9805 So we only did that because I have seen some like Ronald the Rules Lawyer even point out that it any update and release of new books is eventually a new version. And yes, it is "The Same" It is "Not the same" If your DM does not have revised, and you do, it really is different.

A good way to help new players know their dice is to have a different color for each die type. So they roll the red die to attack, and the yellow die for their sword damage, etc.

They did have adventure paths in dungeon magazine and the guys that did the adventure paths didnt have their contract to do the magazine extended and they formed paizo, named their game pathfinder and kept on publishing adventure paths. I prefer running modules as it cuts down on a lot of work. There is a lot of great campaigns out there i want to run as i just recently got back into the hobby Age of worms, WHFRP Enemy within, Call of Chthulhu Masks of nyalorthotep, two headed serpent and orient express, delta green impossible landscapes and a lot of the pathfinder ones.
