Good work brother! I just got my apex engineered front and rear the other day!

I know I've got pinholes on the tail light panel on my 240, so I'm horrified at how much you found under that panel. The hammer forming of that rounded lip was probably the best take away from this for me. At least this time around.

A smoothed rear end on these cars always looks great. For body filler as long as you knocked down the high spots it should probably be fine, though I am not nearly as good at body work as some. It was a humbling experience on my car
@BLOKgarage2 күн бұрын
I've definitely got some learning to do on the upcoming bodywork.

Coming together nicely, Just epoxy prime before bog to avoid future rust
@corty19802 күн бұрын
If you don't lay epoxy primer over the bare metal and just bog over the metal you will have the bog absorb moisture which will cause it to rust. Last thing you want is to put that much work into rust repairs and ruin it.

Whole car is getting epoxied.

Black paint was only offered on the 78z. About 1500 s30 bodies were black and called the Black Pearl. They had special dealer decal and pinstripe packages. You can google all the info. No way to tell if it was an original Black Pearl except by paint code decal on radiator support. Think code is 938? Not sure if it would make your Z more valuable as only the paint color is unique if still black.
@BLOKgarage2 күн бұрын
I don't think that label was on the radiator support when I blew the car apart unfortunately.
@PieterKuijk2 күн бұрын
I really love this project! I like the way you do things. Maybe you want to fill the welded areas with tin (lead) in stead of body filler. It will be much better as body filler has a different expansion coefficient.
@BLOKgarage2 күн бұрын
I gotta look into that anyway for the roof panel. It had lead on the front and rear pillars and I'll need to do something to replace it.

Is the factory tag with the color code missing?
@BLOKgarage2 күн бұрын
Would that be on the aluminum tag under the hood? I haven't looked at that in a year+ at this point so I don't remember.
@sloqlap2 күн бұрын
@@BLOKgarage I guess I remembered wrong myself. There's a sticker near the factory tag that should tell you assuming its still there. One is on the driver door jamb and the other is in the engine bay on the strut tower or near it. i.pinimg.com/474x/53/e1/95/53e195e834d4fa9535ec3702b48c2540--paint-colours-vin.jpg

I’m doing the same thing, but mine is a bit rougher. Rust holes, and very thin. I’m going to look for a replacement panel to just cut the old stuff out. I doubt I have the fabrication skills to make one.

Kfvintagejdm.com and resurrectedclassics.com make a bunch of panels. You'd be surprised what you can learn to do though, I had barely done anything with sheet metal before this.

Coming along nicely! Regarding the colour, I'm no expert but I believe you're correct. My 240z was factory gold (920 gold to be exact). They spray the entire car, interior and exterior in the factory colour, including over the sound deadening and underseal. Mine had been repainted 3 times, twice in two shades of blue and a dark green. Yours being a 280z I believe the factory colour would be 638 black metallic.

Body saw is the way to go. Less cut off dust and smoke in the garage. The professionals use them more than cut off discs, but KZbinrs know that sparks attract eyeballs.
@AW_DIY_garage9 күн бұрын
I have used both, I think it was more for me that I didn't like the body saw. Getting blades for mine sucked and it generally wasn't great (I had a cheap one.)

Excellent video. Did you consider the use of a two part epoxy panel bond for the edges of the roof where the underlying structure connects with the roof skin? I have used a product from 3M (Panel Bonding Adhesive, 08115 or 08116). Additionally you can still weld through the epoxy for additional strength where needed -- the heat will also speed-up the cross linking cure time. The nature of the two part epoxy will also prevent moisture and oxygen transfer and reduce the opportunity for rust.
@BLOKgarage12 күн бұрын
Thanks! I don't have any experience using panel bond but I know they use it a lot on Corvettes. I hadn't heard about being able to weld through it.

I hate how easily you got the window frames out. The 4 bolts on the front all broke despite 48 hour soaks in penetrating fluid.

In-depth presentations are much more effective. When you provide narration over the visuals, you have more time to showcase the detailed work being done. After all, that's the main reason people enjoy watching these restoration videos. The best KZbin channel I've seen for this type of video is (Yorkshire Car Restoration) you should check them out they are excellent. Keep up the great work you're doing on the Nissan.

The undercoating I always used was Rusfre gallon jugs, Its Rubberized , Or I found something that really works well as a undercoating, I buy it in 5 gallons, RUBR-Coat #57 Made buy Black jack its a rubberized roof coating. You cant tell the difference from undercoating

Anyone that does Body work Knows you have to seam seal everything, Undercoating I strongly agree with, Especially if you live on the East coast are you Putting the Original 6 cylinder back in the car Or small block, They are a Fun car to Drive, I have driven all of them 240z and 74 260 z rare car and the 280z like yours, Hope it runs well.
