For those of you new to wave sailing the guy riding down the line, which is to the right at Kanaha, has right of way over a guy riding the wave upwind. We all seek the DTL experience and the "rules" are set up to protect that. Windsurfer could have gone below the kiter like he did earlier but kiter may change his path and you still get a collision.

Were you a little underpowered on that 4.6? Looks fun other than the lulls! I used to sail there and Spreckles if I am remembering correctly!
@SvetlinTotevАй бұрын
I broke my mast in a very similar way. I found it much easier to drag my surf a few meters in so I'm safe from the waves and unrigged it. The mast doesn't slide off when you put it through the straps along the length of the board. I left the extension attached to the board so that it keeps the boom from sliding off. When everything is packed on top of the board it is easy to hold onto all of the parts together. And once I got to the shallow reefs I could easily lift everything out of the water and carry it out safe from the waves and the rocks.

Thank you for the upwind outside right of way etiquette, and the get out with the surge point really helps build the confidence to give it a try some day at Ho`okipa cheers

Man I miss sailing that place! Perfect spot for kooks like me.
@pablola1001Ай бұрын
Hi. It looks like there is little wind and you are short of sail. How many knots were there? How much do you weigh and what is the volume of your board? Thank you.
@michaelvine7698Ай бұрын
Is that sail worth the cash, the S batten is interesting ?
@koavАй бұрын
Absolutely worth every penny. It is so insanely light, maneuverable and likely one of the most durable sails available. It does things that will blow your mind.

Wow, that near miss with that kiter at ~4 minutes in is a perfect illustration of how dangerous they are to windsurfers and themselves. That guy would have been very badly hurt, maybe killed if the windsurfer didn't react the exact way he did. Thankfully, most kiters seem to be transitioning to wing foiling.

nice helitacks! the 90l quatro and 5.0 seems like a nice combo. never sailed a multifin. that is a ton of fin area. use'd to sail at sprecks 20 yrs ago. If you ever need a sailing buddy I could easily be talked into getting out that way.
@koavАй бұрын
Right on I was also a regular at Sprecks in the early 2000’s. It’s sad that there aren’t too many people that sail there anymore.

Thanks for the video! Is Lower Kanaha suitable for wave beginners during Nov-Dec? How consistent is the wind during these months?
@koavАй бұрын
Yes, Lower Kanaha can be a great place to learn to wave sail when it’s not too big. Between November and December you will definitely get good waves and plenty of windy days. Typically this he deeper we are into the winter season the wind tends to drop off and the wave consistency increases.

I don't surf or wind surf but love watching your videos. When me and my wife go to Maui we spend time at Ho'okipa watching you guys. Will be there in November 2024 and was there last year. Been to Maui 8 times in 10yrs and will spend good part of the day there watching. Best of luck my friend.

Awesome, maybe I’ll see you at the beach in November. Come say hi if you see a tall guy with a white helmet and a camera stuck to the front of it… that will be me.

that spot looks absolutely phenomenal. Way better then the brownish north sea in the Netherlands😂 still has it's own charm of course but mostly it looks and feels brutal especially with the cold and hard winds. wish we had the conditions like you lol your skills are off the charts by the way love your riding,🤘

what is the advantage in the new shorter boards with no rocker really trying to figure it out
@koavАй бұрын
The boards that I am riding are pretty average in length for a modern board. My newest board has Marcilio Browne’s rocker which is flatter than my usual rocker which provides more down the line speed and makes it easier to catch waves. It’s always a very fine balance between speed and turn ability. The modern boards look flatter than they really are due to the additional volume the shaper hides in the front half of the board.
@michaelvine7698Ай бұрын
@@koav Thank you Sir very interesting, I have a very old Goya one with tons of rocker. looking to upgrade. But not sure which way to go Simmer Fly wave or goya one are my first thoughts. Thanks again

How is Maui typically for a two week windsurfing trip in mid March, coming from Vancouver? Your videos make it so enticing. Wind would be #1 priority for me and wave sail lessons if the conditions were right.
@johnmartinsen9632 ай бұрын
March has huge variability...you might get wind every day and you might get skunked for the whole month (unless you're capable of float-n-ride). March (or October) offers a good chance of some significant wind + waves (there is room to avoid the surf even during a swell). Biggest swells (for north shore) are typically Nov-Feb and most consistent wind is May-Aug.
@koav2 ай бұрын
@shmish Great to hear from a fellow Vancouverite:) For the past couple of years March has been very windy on Maui. @johnmartinsen963 nailed his response!

This video came up in my feed again recently - so glad it did as I found myself in the exact same situation (and with a brand new sail and borrowed mast!). Mindful of what happened to you I frantically swam the mast around and got just enough of the tip to the wave to avoid catastrophe. Thanks for posting these videos, great to have something to learn from!
