What makes this ship so compelling is how impossible it is. Not because of any surrounding opposition to their union, but because of who they are. They deeply love and respect and admire each other, but their philosophies and convictions are incompatible. To be together would mean one or both of them must change who they fundamentally are at their core. So for the sake of self-preservation, they must keep each other at arm’s length. But the feelings are always there.
