Finally a grinder with pre-seasoned burrs... that really is quite amazing.

It should be standard but almost nobody does it. Makes a huge difference having reliable burrs from day one!

There is no such thing as failure. You have experienced and learned so much ❤ For what it’s worth , I would have loved your coffee shop. I recently stayed in a village in East Riding and my only coffee options locally were Costa machines.

Id argue its more of an alternative to the decent for ppl who are not prepared to spend that kind of money just yet rather than a competitor to the sage at 3 times the price no?

It's nothing like the Decent really. Doesn't have any of the fine controls that the Decent has.

Hey Charlie. I noticed that you used BooKoo themis mini scale throughout this video; I was wondering how it's been working out for you. I'm interested in getting one but there doesn't seem to be many reviews or information about it beyond their website as far as I have searched around. Thank you!

Sorry it went bad. I am not an expert but here in Italy people do not care at all about quality until it is a strong black short espresso. Then it's up to the barista and his mastery of daily conversations about football, politics and trivial chit chats.

Great grinder and great review. For a 64mm grinder I’d still choose the Zerno or the Bentwood.

i wound up ordering a Zerno due December '24. I did consider the Mazzer carefully, but the Zerno seemed more idiot proof and also has blind burr set options that can easily be changed. i got ssp hu.

Great review. I have this grinder on my shortlist. I'm a filter first, espresso second person. One day I'd like two electric grinders; one for espresso and one for filter. Since this will be my very first electric grinder and I mainly drink pour-over I want a pour-over burr first, which seems to be the 200d. I see that reviewed a 1Zpresso handgrinder in the past. Do you think there's a big difference between the 200d and 1zpresso for espresso? I'm asking because I currently own a 1zpresso and I'm very happy with my espresso results. If the 200d would come close to that I'd already be happy.

Thank very much for the detailed review. I only drink straight espresso. I don't have the experience of different roasts and how they compere for my taste but i want to taste them in the future. Do you think that I189D burrs are better for me? I know it may be difficult for to answer this for me but i would really appreciate your help.

Hard to know but I think the average person would likely prefer the 189D burrs for espresso

@Persason

No they can't according to Mazzer. This is due to thickness differences. However you can fit SSP burrs in the philos.
@nikdeb4481
@nikdeb4481 Күн бұрын
@@Persason i think they never denied that these burrs fits in other grinders. They just said that the do not recommend because are better optimized only for philos. They are indeed different thickness from other 64mm burrs but i think aramse said that they fit in other grinders but need also other o-rings. I hope Charlie can clarify this.

People are focusing on the coffee but what confused me was the mention of “third places”, but not having anywhere to sit in the cafe? It’s hard to foster community unless there’s a place for community to be

I think that must be on a reseller. From Mazzer directly it's just over £700 plus you'll need to pay local taxes etc.

Coffee shops they have very slim profits on daily coffee , the only way for that to work in that you have enough foot traffic. You mostly make money from food items. But when you put the initial cost of renovating buying coffee machines which in this market is $10,000 , your initial investment is very high, add the labor , taxes, rent and utilities its a constant pit you dig yourself into.

I feel like the niche zero is still the gold standard , so how does it compare to the niche ????
@donjon1st

Niche is conical burrs, these are flat burrs - not quite apples and oranges but you get the idea
@homecafecharlie
@homecafecharlie 2 күн бұрын
Very different grinder styles. For me the Niche is capable but doesn't make outstanding espresso. The Philos very much does, especially with those I189D burrs which are some of my favourites ever!

Nothing destroys hard earned savings more than the coffee shop fantasy. Most people who do it might have experience as an employee in “business” but no actual experience of being an owner in of a successful business. If this is you save yourself some heartache and stay away, it will destroy you.

It's really hard to make a living in a business - like selling coffee people can make much cheaper at home - which is typically the first thing people cut out of their budget when they need to save money. Marketing is ALWAYS the biggest expense in service businesses, you need to plan to spend TONS of money on outreach to create a reliable income. You worked hard and created a great product, you just picked one of the business models that more often fail because they are, by definition, a "vanity" or " treat myself" purchase. Bottom line: no service business can make a go of it unless they can afford to break even or lose money for a year or more and spend a lot of time and effort on advertising. FYI, I'm a long-time professional marketing specialist, journalist and writer. It's sad how many businesses like this I've seen fail because they ran out of money just as they were on the verge of turning a profit. It's ALWAYS a lot more work than expected to start a business from scratch IRL rather than digitally. Maybe you should have considered crowdfunding your coffee shop :-)

Do you have plan / can you prepare some comparison video of meraki vs nouva Simonelli Oscar 2? It would be nice to see how this new idea espresso machine compare in espresso/ milk coffees vs famous machine with is long time on the market.
@homecafecharlie
@homecafecharlie 2 күн бұрын
I'm not gonna do a video about it cos it's too niche, but overall the Meraki wins in every category other than maybe price. But even then, what the Meraki offers for the price is 2 leagues ahead. I don't think there's any reason to buy the Oscar 2 in 2024 if the Meraki final build is even better than this. I'll be getting the next prototype next week, but if it's as good as I think it will be then the Oscar 2 is over 😅

Not hating, but hoestly from the look of the cafe, and the lcoation and the low budget at open, as well as "over-focus" on sepciality, not suprised this did not go far. Glad to hear you learenedfrom it and gave others advise. From my experince openning and selling a bar, I'd say best way to start is to not cheap out on the setup (euqipment etc), but keep it minimalist, espcially the menu. It becomes much easier to deliver on your promise when your offering is relatevly limited.

The very first thing you should do is to gain info about past 10-15 years of businesses of that location. That really shows how many other people tried, how it lasted, what was their budget, how much they owed and with which debt they left. With this data you can easily read months of profit and months of bad revenue. You should the same way evaluate past house market and population growth - especially local population statistics. It is very easy to understand, if the village/county is booming or dying. This cost you almost nothing and it can aid you so much. And the best startup is to copy/evaluate the best successing buisness and products and start with that knowladge. Never try your own idea first - try working idea first. You can shift and modify years after, but you cannot sell Your product before being known and earning at least to business itself. That is how to start any business ... (Open bakery, if bakery is sucessfull in this area - sell coffee aside and shift focus on coffee once you can afford it. Sell Your products as benefits at first, target Your product once you can afford that equipment etc.) It would cost you like 5000 USD to get professional agency to aid you with all I said. It is really easy and cheap to start any business - you just need to understand the market, revenue, future costs, ... And never ever run business on Your last money - your money should always be only the last break - if shop is not taking care even of itself, you should never let your money to budget it ...

I had always wanted to run a business and my first idea was a cafe, but when looking at the business model its just not a good one. The profit margins are tiny because the expenses are so high including the time cost , if you need to be there all day may as well have a job. Rent sucks the profit . Iso i knew it would never work to run a business that needed a premises. I run a service business where i have recurring revenue ( king in business learned after too many mistakes ! ) my expenses are 200 per month and 100 of that is for the accountancy fees , its so light expenses wise the profit margins are high and this is the key to business success. I knew never to hsve a premises but i made other business mistakes before realising that reoccuring revenue models were the best even if not glamorous.

NOT backing shit on kickstarter ANYMORE> got burned 3 times. over 1000 dollars already. they dont have to deliver shit to you. go and beg them after you waited 2 years :) it should come out, after people have tested it, i pay full price if its really good ..
@earthalign2965
@earthalign2965 3 күн бұрын
Can you tell on what things you get cheated? Because this one looks really promising: 1. Almost ready product 2. So many people get their prototype to test 3. Really good feedback on products 4. Cooperation with timemore (timemore is good on kickstarter). 5. They are not shipping it in every place so its so much better than many hurrai campaigns. It looks promising but it looks like they used kickstarter as a shop for almost ready product. I think and hope they will release this product but the risky part is quality and durability of this product over the years and also if company will last (i hope they will reach big success, we will see).
