Thanks so much for this informative video! Did you hike the old MST from near Devil's Garden down to campsite D? I'm curious to know if that route is doable since it looks like the state park discourages people from going that way. (I don't mind a little bushwhacking, so long as it doesn't end up in a rhododendron thicket.)

Genuine question how do you get campsites along trails like this? Do you have to reserve them? Is it first come first serve? Do you just pay when you’re at the site, or when you’re at the state parks?

You got 8 hours of sleep that second night, do you take Advil on or something? I usually only get about 5-6 I wonder how people get such good sleep. I’m heading out there soon.

Camped at Wise Shelter area before the shelter was there and did a lot of backpacking in this area over the last 30 years. At one point they stopped people from doing overnighters there when the temp dropped down low. But we knew other ways in so we just used those ways in. Camped there in many snow storms some when we probably should not have. But we always were equipped with all the right stuff. This is probably my favorite place to come up too.

Any advice for hiking in snow? It looks beautiful, but I would be concerned about losing the trail. I suppose if it's a trail with which I am familiar, it might not be as much of an issue. Thanks for posting this; I love snow!
@KeeFrHikes8 ай бұрын
Sure. Head to toe… I usually carry a thick wool or down toboggan. When I’m smart and remember I take sunglasses. Usually I do a Smart wool base layer (shirt and pants), hoodie midlayer, a down coat, and raincoat in backpack. I go with the warmest gloves I can find. A buff is important to keep your face covered especially with wind. Thick wool socks, GTX trailrunners or hiking books, and traction for your shoes just in case you need to navigate ice. Great question!

was there a water source at that campsite? if not was there one close by? if yes how close?
@KeeFrHikes10 ай бұрын
There is a water source (Watauga River) before the climb to the campsite begins. On the way to the ridgeline there is a water source called Shanty Spring. That’s the last opportunity for water. To the best of my recollection that’s 0.4 mile from the ridgeline.

What did I do wrong on the trail? I got to the part where there is an arrow high on a tree pointing up and over a boulder. There was a narrow trail carved into the side of the rock, but it looked like it fell away to nothing on the other side and it didn't seem safe to traverse. I gave up so close to the top! Was there another approach that I missed?

@moonpup667 ай бұрын
Once you get to the area of the video where he announces rock scrambling, there are essentially three sections of scramble. The first one had all the multiple blue markings on the right side of the rocks. When you get to the top of that you turn right and you see a lone tree with a blue triangle Beyond the tree you want to stay left all the way to the boulder wall to complete the second scramble. When you get to the top of that second scramble you turn left for the third and final scramble to the top and the view.

Nice hike. I’ve noticed since COVID that even remote areas aren’t immune to careless hikers. Leaving food remnants in bear country really irritates me because of the risk to hikers who come after. The last time I passed through Bryson Place I extinguished an unattended campfire. It was burning pretty good, and there was no sign someone had even tried to put it out. Congrats again of finishing the mountain section of the MST.
