Had the op on Dec 23rd 2024, was limping to the klinik in severe pain on the day of surgery. My surgeon preferres to use full anasthesia. Woke up after the op without pain, obviously still under the effect of narcotics. About 3hrs after op the physio came into the room and I took the first steeps - and what a relieve. The only pain I had was a tingling and stabbing sensation around the incision. There are no same day hip replacements done here where I live (Switzerland), so I was discharged from the clinik on Thursday 26. Without real pain, certainly compared to before the op. Have to use cruches for four weeks and do simple exercises to activate the musculature around the hip and to walk. So far improving steadily. I was bone on bone. In a few month the other side (right) will have to be done. Not on the same level of pain there yet, but basically no cartillage left. So same place, same surgeon, same procedure. Oh, didn't need to shave and got ceramic on poly.

Thanks for watching and for sharing. It's always interesting to hear how things differ in other countries. Curious, are the crutches the traditional armpit crutches, or forearm crutches? Hope all continues to progress well and good luck with your second THR in a few months. I'll be curious if that experience is different as I often hear.

Just like us hippies, medical professionals are unique individuals, so you're right, we need to be our own best advocates. Sometimes you get lucky and get a surgeon whose philosophy matches your unique situation and sometimes it requires persistence, second opinions, etc. My surgeon wasn't convinced by the xrays, but when he saw the MRI he agreed with me that I needed a THR. Glad things are progressing nicely in your recovery.

I had my anterior thr last week, spent 3 nights in hospital, told to use crutches for 4 weeks, then one crutch for 2 weeks, not drive for 6 weeks until follow up with surgeon. The joint feels great, but of course, the groin and muscles are aching. I'm still using ice and pain meds and just walking around the house for now. I am 70, so that may be why my journey sounds longer than most I've watched on youtube. I'm also in Australia, and they don't do one day surgery and then send you home. It's also under general anaesthetic, which takes longer to recover from.
@Life4118 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Our journeys are all going to be different and I'm sure the things you mention are factors. Re: the groin pain, if that remains for more than 10 days, you might want to talk to your surgeon about a prescription NSAID like Meloxicam because sometimes that's referred pain from an inflamed nerve. That was what my groin pain was and I resumed Meloxicam for two weeks post-op and then it went away for good. Best wishes in your recovery and look forward to further updates.

@Life4119 күн бұрын
Sorry you're having trouble sleeping. I don't know if this will help, but these are some sleeping tips I used both pre- and post-op my THR. SLEEPING TIPS AND STRATEGIES (PRE- or POST-OP) 1) Avoid or minimize pain meds during the day so they are more effective at night 2) Plan activities that may cause pain for the early part of the day. Start preparing for a good night’s sleep in the late afternoon by discontinuing activities that might make it worse. And begin taking pain meds to reduce pain before bedtime. 3) Take an Over-the-counter (OTC) sleep aid (with ingredients like Diphenhydramine or Doxylamine Succinate). Magnesium, Melatonin and similar things did not help me sleep. 4)Have a second dose of pain killers and sleep aids and water at your bedside. 5) This video talks through how I managed pain in order to get enough sleep to function pre-op, but I did essentially the same post-op. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmizfneYpdV9fqc

@@Rex_Racer interesting. Hard to know. These cars are hand built despite all the marketing. I had some body fit panel issues when I took delivery. I checked four other cars on the lot and it was a complete mishmash. Some had the same problem, some the opposite problem, some no problem at all. So I guess it's possible One car may experience tram lining while another doesn't. Or perhaps it's partially the difference between sport and Turing suspension.... Mine is sport and absolutely no tram lining that I can detect.

Hi, I am amazed that you could do so much before your replacement! I was in constant pain and was having difficulty just walking around. After I woke from surgery the surgeon came to see me and I asked what shape my old hip was in. "Not good" was all he said. I think that was bone on bone. I am amazed at how quickly I am recovering. Three weeks on Monday. I then get to see a physio. The dressing is off and the wound is healing well. Apparently, no doctors in our area do anterior incisions so I took what was available. I have a huge scar, about the size of my outstretched hand, on the top of the outside of my left hip. It hurt really bad for a few days but the medication got on top of it and now all is great. Have a great New Year. Regards, Doug
@Life41111 күн бұрын
Hi Doug, Thanks for the update...glad you are doing well. I think my incision is of similar length...about 5 inches or more if I remember correctly. I think we all handle pain differently and bad hips can cause all sorts of different pain. Hard to compare, but I think I can tolerate a lot of pain and discomfort during the day so long as I can manage it well enough to get enough sleep at night to function the next day. So once I knew I was getting a replacement, that's how I managed it. Hope you have a great New Year too! Pete

That's when the block has worn off and you're at highest pain level. My SO recently had her knee replaced and she only needed Tylenol same surgeon. He's changed a few things on med's that resulted in less pain. I have another knee replacement ordered just been avoiding since I can't kneel on the artificial one...just to uncomfortable but I recently discovered a set of knee pads that transfers all pressure off knee and to the shins and thigh. I was able to move comfortably on my knees across the room so now I'm not so worried able getting second knee done. I'm sure i'll end up with hip replacements at some point since both parents had both done. My knee surgeon does jiffy hips as well.

You mentioned the infamous tram-lining of the Alfa 4C. This is a characteristic often criticized by reviewers. I have found that it can be much reduced by strictly adhering to the recommended tire pressures as posted inside the driver's door jamb, 26 psi front and 29 rear. My habit in the past has been to always run tire pressures a few psi over recommendations. Usually, this has helped to tighten up steering response and overall handling feel. However, I have found that the Alfa 4C becomes nervous, and darts all over the road when you increase tire pressure.

Example of micro motion? I’m getting a THR January 17th!!!
@Life41125 күн бұрын
They didn't really define it in the study I found, but another viewer dug this up...not sure if it will all paste, but FYI: ------------ copy/pasted from the great Google from here on ------------ In orthopedics, micromovement is the small, temporary, relative movement between bone and an implant or fracture site: Implant fixation Micromotion is the movement between the bone and an implant surface when the implant is loaded. Micromotion can be caused by a number of factors, including the implant material, bone density, and surgical technique. Too much micromotion can prevent the implant from integrating with the bone, resulting in a fibrous capsule around the implant. Cementless fixation techniques and challenges in joint replacement* M.J. Cross, ... J. Spycher, in Joint Replacement Technology (Second Edition), 2014 7.3.1 Implant stability, micromotion and interface gaps Excessive micromotion of an implant in bone renders bone ingrowth impossible. The amount of permitted minimal movement at the interface has been reported to be 28-150 μm. Repetitive higher displacements allow only ingrowth of fibrous tissue [27, 28]. Micromotion is a function not just of primary implant stability but also of the differences in the elastic modulus of bone and in the implant material. In tibial trays this mismatch can produce motions of up to 150 μm. Retrieved implants have shown best bone ingrowth near fixation pegs and inconsistent ingrowth patterns at the periphery [29]. Even for the most talented surgeons, it remains impossible to produce an absolute conforming host site that shows no gaps over the entire surface area. Those areas that lack direct contact have an inhibitory effect on osseointegration and this effect is proportional to the size of the gap. Numerous models with analysis of controlled gaps in stable implants reveal that bone ingrowth is reduced up to six-fold in the presence of a 2 mm gap as compared to direct bone contact. These results demonstrate the supreme importance of meticulous surgical technique to keep the incidence and dimensions of gaps to a bare minimum [20, 30]. In our study of hydroxyapatite-coated total knee replacements, we showed that gaps up to 2 mm filled in after 2 years, but only if the implant was absolutely stable [31].
