I’m 120 pages into “The Ruins” by Adam Nevill. I’m not enjoying it, think the writing style is poor and disjointed and the characters are weak. Anyone have a similar experience? Should I put it down and spend October reading something better (I am a slow reader due to work, so likely, depending on the size of the book, will only squeeze one in).
@RGsDevilship

Do you mean the Ritual by Adam Nevill or The Ruins by Scott Smith? If it's the Ritual, it does take a little while longer to get invested in the characters, the three friends seem so similar in their mindset against Luke. But as things take off, it definitely gets more interesting. My knowledge on folk horror and black metal was probably the reason I was able to enjoy it so much, but a lot of people struggle through the second half of it. I'd say maybe watch the film adaptation and then see if it's something you'd want to finish or not.

Excuse me, *the ritual* getting mixed up… I’m a big horror fan but feel that it’s just too dark from the outset, no light at the end of the tunnel as such. Seen the movie, enjoyed it but I really don’t know… other options I have, at home, include: Tender is the flesh Ghost story Wizard in Glass (continue series) Dracula American psycho Something wicked this way comes I am not excited for any books atm, hitting abit of a slump. Think I need a break 😂

I have not read Julia Armfield before but you sold it. I’m on a haunted house kick - just did the original Haunting of Hill House and I’m now on Oyeyemi’s White is for Witching.

@@RGsDevilship Yep...I'm not alone lol...Off Season is a masterpiece. Very nice reviews as always! I totally understand reading slumps, I'm in a similar situation currently. Not really a slump, but a long, slow read. I'm a fan of biographies & I'm reading Grant by Ron Chernow, which is around 1,000 pages. It's excellent, but there's so much detail that I'm reading slow to soak it in better, it's like time traveling for me. I highly recommend it if you like that type of book. I am looking forward to eventually reading Lapvona, Cackle & Water Shall Refuse Them.
@RGsDevilship
@RGsDevilship 14 күн бұрын
I feel like with long books, whether fiction or non-fiction, you just need to take some extra time with them to soak up all the details. It usually takes me 3-4 weeks to read a 1000 page book, I could bash it out in a week but where's the fun in that?! 😊

Another great video on this topic. I totally agree that pre-ordering while on a ban is a bit like cheating. I've seen people do these "bans" and they make exceptions, which, in my opinion, defeats the purpose. I wish more people in the book community talked about this.
@RGsDevilship
@RGsDevilship 14 күн бұрын
I agree, I get that maybe one or two books that you're genuinely excited about and need to read asap. But it does come off as pointless if you have loads of preorders and then book subscription boxes as well. I've also recently seen content creators going on book buying bans but then encouraging their audience to buy them books off their wishlist, which is a whole other matter of problematic behavior and taking advantage of your audience.

Blackwood’s got some really spooky stuff. May I suggest Arthur Machen’s The White People (it is a short horror story but I found it delectable). Also. If you have not been exposed to it already, I highly recommend Lilith by George MacDonald. It gives me a devilish little thrill. Currently, I am trying to find something that hits me in the way that Dead Eleven did. So hard to find those creepy slow burns. Maybe something in analogue horror? Let me know if you have any suggestions. Halloween is just around the bend. 👻

I recently listened to the audiobook of "The House of Last Resorts". As an Italian myself, I found it engaging how the author portrayed the southern Italian life of Sicily, with some passages even written in Italian. The story itself was highly predictable, but overall, it was a nice read. Of course, this is just my personal taste.

That's understandable, I find that certain horror novels can lean into the cliche themes or tropes but just because they do so, it doesn't take away from ones overall enjoyment of it.

Welcome, glad you stumbled upon my little corner of the internet! No you weren't wrong in your opinion!! Not to be shady, but I feel like those who rated Maeve Fly highly solely did so just because it had an "unhinged female character" and that's trendy within the community at the moment. She wasn't a well written character in my opinion, the story itself was slow and cliche and the ending was just a bit cringy.
