My great grandfather told the story of his grandfather being involved in this massacre. He was the local blacksmith and Hamilton came for him that morning. They lived on the hill north of the ravine and he talks about them hiding behind the stone wall that is still there in a shootout between Hamilton, his men, and my grandfather’grandfather. He mentioned a horse was killed in the shootout.

I'm a Jewish man and I have a lot of respect for the Latter-Day Saints. My rabbi in Dallas who taught me a lot about Jewish traditions, his cantor was like the rabbi both of whom one thing that was interesting about the 3 of us, our closest friends were/are Latter-Day Saints. My rabbi was surprised when Joseph Smith sent out the 12 to evangelise around the world, one of the 12 went to Israel. By Smith when that member of the 12 asked Smith how best to communicate with Jews to convert them. Joseph Smith told him, you're not converting them into anything. He was instructed that the Gentiles were being grafted into Israel. But Jews have never been excised from the root. How could they convert into themselves? When my rabbi asked the Latter-Day Saints bishop who was his best friend and next door neighbor of his, the bishop explained the LDS lay-person who was baptizing for the dead Jews they were misguided and didn't understand Joseph Smiths teaching. Once it was explained the rabbi understood and smiled about it. I'm not sure if my rabbi is still teaching, God knows he must have been 150 when I knew him after being his student for 10 years 2003 to 2013ish.

There were three bands of Osage: Pahatsi aka Big (Grand) Osage, Udseta aka Little Osage, and Santsukhdi aka Arkansas Osage (Osage of the Oaks). Village sites were periodically relocated as the ground and immediate area became worn and depleted which is probably the case of the Brown site (1779) being vacated. The move could be just a couple of few miles. In the case to fhe Arkansas Osage, a poltical schism led to some Big Osage to move to the Verdigris-Neosho rivers in NE Oklahoma. The treaty of 1808 resulted in the Osage losing their land between the Mississippi River and line drawn straight south from Fort Osage to the Arkansas River. That line passed very close to their villages on the Osage River. They were not happy when they realized that.

They're boxelder bugs, and they're harmless. They are probably there because it is warmer there than anywhere around. The wasp nests can be easily done away with. I love the history of the Gower house. If I had the money to restore it, it would make a wonderful riverfront home.

There is also the rather wild theory that Mary was Emperor Franz Joseph's illegitimate daughter. Her father had risen from commoner to baron at lightspeed, a thing that almost never happened. You did not go from no title at all to Baron von Vetsera in a fraction of a lifetime, like Mary's father did. This usually took a minimum of 2 generations and usually involved great achievements or a hefty donation to the emperial coffers. The theory therefore claims that this elevation to barony was granted by the Emperor as a compensation for keeping FJ's fathership of Mary secret. It is further assumed that Rudolf at some time found out and that this shocked him profoundly, thereby triggering the murder/suicide pact. Or that there was some kind of blackmail involved. As I said, a wild theory.

Its been a while since I was at this place. but a lot has changed in over 40 years. Looks like that tea shop used to be a restaurant called a streetcar named desire. that waterfall was my favorite spot in crown center, and we used to do some zippy ice skating at that tent rink.

Hi, interesteing content, very nicely done.I was wondering though , since you have an interest in the Osage people, have you ever been out side of Verona Missouri, as what we know as "the Spanish Fort"? I been there years before The University bought it, and closed it off. At least the fort area. However I know from word of mouth from older farmers, who are past on by now, that there are more to this area than the University might have known, for instance the fort set's up on a hill, which is now a cemetary, but any case the fort sets on a hill, it was for protection, whils the rest of the tribe was down in the valley, off to the left, I couldn't say if the University knew, or if they ever discovered it, I have seem some area's that looked to me that peoplw could have stayed there maybe for a winter, but The Osage were a nomadic tribe, constantly on the move.

Note that the Osage left that hilltop village shortly after meeting French traders there, so their reason for leaving was probably illness related. Europeans were more immune to smallpox, for instance, than the Indians were, so the French could have brought the disease with them as some point, devastating the village population. After so many deaths, they probably burned their longhouses and vacated the area. Did the archeology done there note any evidence of significant burning at that time? Another possibility is that a wildfire swept through.

My Great Grandmother was Osage from Kansas and married a White man who was my Great Grandfather. When I met her when I was young,I remember her. She was about 5 feet and had hair down to her rear end and was it was mixed with white streaks . She would sit in her chair and talk to us about the days when she was young girl. Never forgot her. We called her Ninny.

Spain has always evangelized while Britain was usually motivated by resources and money while Spain integrated into the societies they gained.

The incident at Haun's Mill took the life of the young son of John D Lee. The same John D Lee that was the ringleader at Mountain Meadows Massacre, Utah almost 20 years later. The killing committed there was certainly an act of personal vengeance.
