Thank you for the great New Year's ride, even if it must have been bitterly cold for you. Just watching it made me cold. And I was lying on a sofa under a blanket. 🥶

This infrastructure would be heaven for many of us USA dwellers. I ride bike for utility and economic reasons in town where the roads lead to a stroad with no shoulder. The only bicycle infrastructure we get is a sign telling us to take the official bike route going out of town. Be grateful for what you have

You also use the metric system. Or did Bosch not give any other options?

6:51 judging by the flow of traffic, why would you need 2 lane in each direction ? (A single lane can really handle a lot of traffic, the Dutch know that).

Carmel looks lovely on this bike tour! I especially like the ornamental iron lampposts. Even if they are aluminum replicas I appreciate not going with galvanized led cobra heads. Not the point of the video. I have a obsession with old time street lights.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sorry it ended abruptly by a battery that stopped functioning in the cold.
@pedalingpast6012 күн бұрын
@AmericanFietser that battery held up for a good long time in the cold. I also liked that your rig could turn 180 so smoothly. Will admit I am big sucker for that style of outdoor winter market. You did a nice job navigating that cargo bike on the multi use path with all the foot traffic. Great video!!

I just got back from Italy and was fascinated by the death defying feats of cyclist and motorbike riders. But I also noticed how patient automobiles were with each other and the vespas that seemingly have no rules of the road other than a strong desire to move. Also no horn honking or yelling at cyclist like I experience here in Omaha.

The sheer scale of this solar plant is horrific. Why not solar on top of every building? A multi layer underground parking garage with a garden or solar on top? So many more, less intrusive, possibilities. This has become another urban desert. Spätzle is pronounced with the ä as ey/ay in hey or hay. Reíbekuchen (potato pancakes) are very easy to make yourself. Just rasp some potatoes, add salt, let it leak out, add some pepper and an egg, mix well, and bake in oil. You can add small cut onions to the mix and nutmeg to taste. Some flour or oatmeal if you are in a hurry and do not have time to let the shredded potatoes leak.

A lovely tour around Carmel. And to address the question from the introduction: Yes, I also think it’s mostly greenwashing. But honestly, it doesn’t matter, as long as it works. I know several companies that started with greenwashing, discovered the real benefits for themselves, and are now fierce advocates of sustainable energy policies.
@SledgeOfHouseHammer12 күн бұрын
One parking lot could be greenwashing. But if every typical US mega parking lot did this (I'm looking at you Houston, TX) then I would say no it isn't. In general though, take every win you can, even it is small.

A slightly different live stream than usual, but no less entertaining. Lots of input on cycling in winter, from someone who knows what winter really means. I'm looking forward to the next stream.👍

One of these days you have to do a toolbox tour. Is that general purpose or just for your bike?
@AmericanFietserАй бұрын
Lol, that's just general tools. I'm not a bike mechanic by any means.

I missed the last two live streams because I didn't know they were happening. How can I get advanced notification 2 or 3 days ahead of time?
@AmericanFietserАй бұрын
Well, I tend to plan these streams no more than a day in advance and sometimes, such as yesterday, just a few hours in advance. If you want to attempt to catch a live stream, you can hit the notification bell on the channel to get notified when I go live. Unfortunately, that's the best I can do. Trying to do these streams amongst regular day to day life, weather, etc is a bit hard to plan...for me anyway. 🙃

It’s a different setup as the bike I have a winter cover for uses a frame-integrated battery, but it loses roughly 25% range when it’s around or slightly below freezing. With the foamed neoprene sleeve wrapped around the frame and battery, it loses about 10%. I stop riding when it’s -15C so I don’t know how it works then.

22:10 Why aren't you running studded tires on the Urban Arrow this year?
@AmericanFietserАй бұрын
The simple answer is that I don't have easy access to a shop that can swap them for me. I'd have to rent a U-Haul, haul it to a bike shop, and bring it home again. That's pretty much the whole of it.
@DizzyDiddyАй бұрын
@AmericanFietser that makes sense. I thought you did the swaps on your own. I'm in the same boat needing to rent a U-Haul whenever we need to service our Urban Arrow, with our dealer being about an hour away by car. You're absolutely right about the difficulties with riding in winter weather being an infrastructure or maintenance problem. They do okay here, but there is still way too much lag between when the plows have cleared the roadways before they get to clearing the pathways.
@AmericanFietserАй бұрын
@DizzyDiddy an hour away?! Man, that's bad. Mine is about 10 minutes away, but their location is just such that riding there could easily turn deadly. The stroad their shop is on claimed the life of one of their mechanics a few years ago from a motorist.
@JaydenLitolffАй бұрын
@@AmericanFietser are tire swaps significantly harder on a cargo bike? I've done my own tires on my commuter and I didn't find it very mechanically complex
@AmericanFietserАй бұрын
Messing with a rear tire is a pain and like many people, I'm not mechanically inclined on a bike.

@@AmericanFietser Oh yeh man, we just got back today. We hit the Christkindlmarkt for a couple hrs both days...pretty damn cold, but I fortified myself with booze. Also drove down to Indy, walked around the canal, went to the historical and ate at Shapiro's Deli (Oh. My. God!!..delicious!). Man, I really like your area there, we're actually thinking semi-retirement in Carmel or northern Indy in like 10, 15 yrs.

Couldn't watch live as I'm in Europe and different time zone. We've had below freezing here but still cycle. I'm always amazed at how flat your town is and how ideal for cycling it would be.

You'll have the same idiots that removed trees to make roads 'safer', thereby leading to increased speeds, claiming that if the tree hadn't been there, the crash wouldn't have happened.
