Christ gave his apostles the authority to forgive sins in his name ;"Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven. Whose sins you do not forgive, they are not forgiven" This Sacrament from Christ has been handed down through the centuries and is continued by the Priests in the Church. If you confess all your sins and obtain absolution you will have a brand new friendship with God. Protestants object to this sacrament, saying God can only forgive sins, not a man. When the Priest forgives your sins it is actually God forgiving them through the Priest.
