I saw a number of 10,000 Maniacs concerts in 1987, including this one. 😊 I remember being in the front row and I am trying to catch myself in the audience shots. I met the band afterwards and Natalie told me the fact I knew the words to every song made her feel she had an ally. Such amazing memories. ❤

Going through most of my life with depression since college. When I heard "Like the Weather" it hit me so hard, Natalie captured the state of depression perfectly in this song. Helped me understand my condition better and that she knew how I felt.

I saw this tour in Raleigh, NC. They completely won me over, and now I remember why. Rob Buck's playing is even better than on the albums. He manages both lead and rhythm with complete control. I remember thinking that Natalie''s antics were distracting at first, but by the end of the show I was in love. The magic of those two together - her voice and his guitar sensibilites - was something truly special.

The renditions of Scorpio rising and gunshy at the end of this show are so pristine and powerful, the band is really achieving brilliance at the end of an actualized, locked-in set. Jerry so solid, I’ve enjoyed this footage for the cameraman’s sense of his focus and drive on the material. Buck always so controlled onstage, makes me smile.

I met Natalie & the band after a show in Seattle for this tour. What I remember most about it was just is how incredibly stunning she was up close, how shy yet personable she was and how some guy asked her for a hug and she politely declined and offered to shake his hand. I wasn't that guy, but I'm thinking were he not declined, I would have been next in line. Ahh, what I wouldn't give to be 17 again & crushing on Natalie.

It’s really amazing that Ms.Merchant can write so eloquently about such difficult topics as spousal abuse, poverty, pollution, child abuse, unwanted pregnancy and depression, and, yet, we all can sit at home or drive in our cars, listening to her and her band mates and experience such joy. It really is a tribute to this incredibly-talented group of musical performers.

The first concert 10,000 maniacs i went to was during the In My Tribe tour, 87 or 88. They did the full set, a lot of the songs at the beginning of this video and from that album. The band came back for 2 encore songs. Then Natalie came out by herself, sat at the piano, played and sang Verdi Cries. No accompaniment other than the piano she was playing. Unbelievably beautiful.
@kensellers40822 жыл бұрын
I saw the 10,000 Maniacs in concert at around the same time. They were superb in concert. Unfortunately, there was a large group of teenaged girls at the concert, wearing those same long dresses that Natalie Merchant often wore on stage, and they kept shouting, “Natalie! Natalie!” throughout the show. Finally, with Ms. Merchant performing “Verdi Cries,” at the end of the concert, these young girls would not shut-up and Ms Merchant just got up from her piano, saying, “This place is a zoo,” and walked off the stage in disgust. The young girls just kept on shouting, seemingly oblivious to Ms. Merchant’s understandable anger.
@sydneycarton99732 жыл бұрын
@@kensellers4082 Sorry that happened. There were always a lot of people yelling ''WE LOVE YOU NATALIE!', but not disturbing the performance. I had great seats for the first concert I was at, a friend was in advertising sales for Time Warner in Houston, and we had seats 5 or 6 rows from the stage, in the center. When she started Verdi Cries the audience told each other to shut up. I remember that performance like it happened yesterday.
@kensellers40822 жыл бұрын
@@sydneycarton9973 Sydney, Wow, that’s great that you had such terrific seats to see the band up close. It’s funny, but when I saw them here in NJ in 1988, Natalie Merchant obviously was the sole singer and she was the only member of the band to address the audience; the other guys in the band essentially remained silent during the entire concert. I saw the 10,000 Maniacs last week at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ and they were, once again, superb in concert. And, we got to hear new guitarist Jeff Erickson sing lead on a song and bass guitarist Steven Gustafson had everyone laughing with his great wit. Mary Ramsey, the new singer and violinist, was outstanding as was Jeff Erickson, the late, great Robert Buck’s guitar successor. After the show, several members of the band came out into the lobby to meet their fans. Steven Gustafson was gracious enough to autograph the live cd I purchased after the show. I held his drink for him while he autographed the cd! Steven thanked me for being a fan of theirs for forty years now. And, Dennis Drew remembered performing at the old Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ way back in 1988, when I first saw them with my fiancee. The members of this great band are as friendly and outgoing as they are superb musical performers. I hope they keep performing and recording new albums for many years to come. PS The 10,000 Maniacs rightfully belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I don’t know what’s taking so long forJan Wenner to admit this great American group into the R&R HOF?

For sure it was . Nathalie had her good reasons to go solo , but despite high recognition of her talent , she never had the public success in solo than what they had with the band . And considering that the band seriously faded away without her , we will never how big they could have been if they had not separated .

This is from that Electra package tour with X and The Call. This was in support of the brilliant In My Tribe album, so the songs were fresh & so was Natalie's haircut, which previously had been waist- length. Also the loss of John Lombardo changed the dynamics of the band for the positive, with Natalie front & center as lead singer leader. They never reached the kind of success that they should have. They didn't get much radio airplay because radio thought they were too "alternative" which was unfair. Natalie used to refer to herself as a folk singer. But you heard groups like Blondie and REM who had a similar sound on radio all the time. The name "10,000 Maniacs " didn't help. They were always a favorite of mine.

The wishing chair is very good too. ps did you see Lombardo with Mary Ramsey when they were "John and Mary" ? A lot of charisma Natalie Merchant had.. Still has I guess.. The music was pop but muscular. The attitude of the band was very anti-punk but the music still had some of that energy. And Natalie was woke before woke. So for me, it's nice to hear a song or two but then snap back to the current day. The MTV unplugged show is a good contrast to this one. It's a great show and Natalie was in great form, professional to a tee but so clearly looking forward to life after 10k maniacs.
