It is actually a great exercise. Most guys esp newbies do this exercise wrongly. You need to place your hands wider apart compared to front press and lower the poundage at least about 30%. My shoulders are my best bodypart because of this exercise
@Trenacetate43
@Trenacetate43 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah look how wide levrone grip is and he has short arms, when I do this I use super wide grip, my hands are almost on the smith machine sled. And lower it to the back of my head not up to my neck or even traps. I see newbies doing this exercise with narrow grip and rest the bar on their traps thats a recipe for snap city

I agree with the stress on the FULL range of motion, in what you said with the bicep curls (Scott curls). The stretch is more important than the comtraction. That personally for me goes true with all my exercises.

In regards to the Larry Scott curl: full ROM will target more of the muscle, less ROM will target less of the muscle and therefore develop less of the muscle. This is necessarily targeting a specific area, it's just when using this full ROM you are hitting an area that is usually neglected when you limit the ROM in a preacher curl. So NO you aren't physically targeting an area, you're just doing the exercise "correctly".

I thoroughly enjoyed this video topic! I felt like I was talking story with a friend, lol. Some random thoughts: 1. I think Dorian Yates hidden secret weapon he paired with the Yates row was the nautilus machine lat pull over. 2. I believe the Scott curl differs from a preacher curl in that the elbows are pulled in closer with the hands wider than the shoulders. The preacher pad may also be spun around so the arms are on the flat side. 3. Didn't Arnold Schwarzenegger invent the tbar row? I swear I read that somewhere. 4. In a video jay Cutler said his trademark, go-to quad builder was the Smith machine front squat. 5. The dexter Jackson twisting single leg hack squat is almost always done at my university gym by females. 6. I read about that behind the back upright row in flex magazine back in like 2002? It's so cool you found out this piece of information. 7. I seen in a video that lee priest said his one and only go to forearm exercise was the single arm dumbbell wrist curl for the forearms where he placed his forearm on a bench. 8. And no offense, but every branch Warren exercise is unusual. Lol! I'm kidding! Branch always brings the intensity! Id love to see a part 2! I could think of some others.
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 5 жыл бұрын
Yes Nautilus pullover is another good one for Yates, one of the main reasons (aside from genetics) his front lat spread was so godly! Never heard that about Arnold inventing T-bar rows, although he would probably be the earliest one I'd seen doing it now that you mention it... 🤔

I prefer the underhanded grip on the barbell row if only because it enables the elbows to be tucked much closer to the rib-cage. It has the potential to strain the biceps, yes, but with focus, you can eliminate much of the biceps' influence in this movement.

@hungarianbeast

@@Tomn8er Yeah I agree that is one of the staple excersies of Kai, whenever he goes to do seminars he allways murders the big meat-head guys with that exercise. For example here in Hungary he asked the guy who holds the squat record here (and also a competative body builder so in theory he should know how to train for mass and has a good mind muscle connaection) to try the excersise his way. The hungarian guy who was well over 300+ pounds almost cried (actuall man tears) when he tried it, yet he only had the bar and maybe 2 5 kilogramm plates on each side. It was a joy to witness :D

I also have injured my lower back in the same way. Hurts like hell! In my case it was a partial rupture down where the erector attaches to the hip on the left side. The first doctor I saw totally misdiagnosed the injury also (told me it was an inflammation in some hip ligaments) so instead of trying to move and stretch a bit while it healed she told me to rest and not do anything until the pain went away. This of course made the muscle heal badly and now it gets inflammed as soon as I try to lift a bit heavier because that part of the muscle doesn't get the same bloodflow and nutrients and it doesn't grow in the same rate as the rest of the muscle, which sucks!

@davidkymdell452
@davidkymdell452 5 жыл бұрын
Bicep height (peak) is largely genetic. No matter what Arnie did, he would have had great, Peaky biceps. The peak of the bicep is created by the long head which is best activated with both a supinated motion and putting into an extended position behind the body i.e. incline curls with an outward twist....neither of which is done in the way Arnie performs his concentration curl. There are a ton of great exercises in his Encyclopedia but there is also a lot of bro science bullshit.
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 5 жыл бұрын
Correct, but those concentration curls will hit the peak too cuz the outer head is also engaged the more the arm/hand is brought towards the midline of the body.

@@davidkymdell452 Good kinesiologic observation, that seems to target the long head well. Thanks, PEAK is the word I was looking for. Arnold mentioned that very word while explaining his standing concentration curl. They worked/work for me, but I know for a fact that I didn't do these curls for peak, but once I did, they began to climb for sure. He (Arnold) also stressed lengthening the biceps belly to help fill in the lower part of the biceps as stated in this video.

Great channel. Barbell row Yates style does not predominantly develop the lower lat as he claimed, it actually develops the upper back and erector spinae. You can't selectively activate bicep motor units at either end, or create a bicep peak, medical impossibility.

Chain dips when done with a long chain actually act like a giant resistance band. More of the chain sits on the floor at the start of the rep, making the bottom half of the rep easier than the top portion.

Behind the neck presses if you can get away with them are about the best shoulder exercise you can do. emphasis on the IF as not everyone has that flexibility and comfort. back in the 90s these were a staple of any shoulder routine and everyone did them, heavy as well. I used to love them and grew big shoulders doing these, its a rare exercise that hits all three heads in one exercise. now at 42 i avoid them though as i no longer have that flexibility and it doesn't feel safe when doing them. but if you can do them and feel good doing such then i highly recommend you try them

@@debarghabiswas6858 possibly because a lot of those lifters did heavy compound lifts. Especially deadlifts and squats, which target the Spinae erectors tons and with a lot of weight. Then they also did good mornings and lots of heavy pull ups. Basically using isolation exercises for the smaller muscles in the middle of the back, and polishing off the cuts and depth/3d effects. The heavy compound lifts put tons of mass on specifically in the lower back (Spinae erectors), Lats (mostly middle-top of the lat but some at the bottom), and traps (Pretty much only in the middle/top portion).

Hi Tom, im one of your fan. You videos have always provided top quality content and i always appreciate your hard work put in each videos. I have one suggestion that you should cover “the most complete bodybuilders” count down from 10 (or how many as depending on your opinion). I have searched the youtube and it has already “the most aesthetic which mainly is about the overall shape” “the biggest - mainly about size” “the greatest - about their impact and achievements”. What i mean by the most complete is i think this will be a suitable sequel after the series of body parts to see who have the most complete physics which mean have all the strong body parts. For example big ron is great in every body part but for his mid section, calves and triceps or phil is not known for his mid section and narrow structure. What i mean is that a bodybuilder that have no or least weak body parts and it should come in size, shape, developments, aesthetics, should to waist ratio, .... i had this idea in mind for a quite long time but my resource, time and knowledge wont let me do this topic perfectly and i think you are the one who is best suit for this one. Hope my comment and idea catch your attention. Many thanks!!!

I pulled my Lower back as a noob gutting out dead lifts more than a decade ago. I couldn’t even sneeze or cough without pain. Your back is connected to everything you do. You may think it’s not until you fuck it up.

A little "correction " Larry Scott did not developed preacher or preacher curls but his friend. Larry just popularized. Arnold Press is basically modified Larry Scott Press. Larry just did wider and leaning foward on 80 DEG incline bench. There are a lot other cases. Someone come up with something and more famous person popularized and the name stuck.

I use seated preacher curls lets me use all my energy on my biceps
@jamesjacob9632
@jamesjacob9632 5 жыл бұрын
Preacher curls have too much resistance at the beginning and too little at the end. It's less effective and potentially dangerous. You don't want to put so much tension curling in an underhand grip with a straight arm. Think of a mixed grip deadlift. This is how people tear their biceps. Standing curls have a much more effective resistance curve and are less risky as well. The hardest part of the standing curls is when your forearm is perpendicular to the ground, not when your forearm is straight. The biceps have only one primary function- elbow flexion- so pick the best (most effective and safest) one to target them- I think that is standing dumbbell curls.
