What I want to know is how did you make that transition from head deep in woo to one of the most skeptical vegans on the internet?
@UnnaturalVegan7 жыл бұрын
Two things, perhaps. First, raw food never quite became part of my identity, although it was a big part of my life and I did make money promoting it. I always considered myself primarily a skeptic/rational person and eventually I learned raw didn't fit with that. It was either stay raw and essentially follow a religion, or give it up (same thing happened with objectivism/libertarianism). Second, I never idolized Graham or any of the other cult leaders. This made it not only easier to them for what they were, but more importantly, to accept it.

Amen to the always feeling cold thing!!! I was eating Raw Til 4 with probably less than 5% fat (no overt fats such as nuts, seeds, etc. even oatmeal had too much fat for me. 🙄) during the summer last year and was stick thin, so I didn't think the heat not bothering me was anything serious. Then, as soon as it hit 60 degrees, I was shivering 24/7 and no amount of blankets could keep me warm. My hands were always chapped, cracked, and bleeding. I had two jobs during the fall and winter, and would eat my "lunch" (two large carrots) in my car between jobs, shivering so bad I thought I was going to pass out. I finally started eating more starches and fats earlier this year, and a hell of a lot more protein. I hardly even eat fruit anymore and I feel so much better. Eat your fats!!!!!!!!!

A raw vegan diet is much too expensive because one would have to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables to be full also one has to go to the supermarket quite often and carry a lot and heavy stuff. We are a family of four (soon 5) and getting everyone full just with fruit and vegetables would be far too expensive, we make a green smoothie everyday and eat also a lot of fruit and vegetables but it's easier and cheaper to have a satisfying meal with starches (potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, pasta) and for example legumes once a day

Thanks for your answer @Rachel P ! Whoah, I could never stomach such a huge smoothie in the morning. Thoughts as I'm watching this: I don't think the layerd hair is bad, but I do like your hair better now. Love your cat. Can you eat spinach or snow peas? The granola bars still look yummy. I probably couldn't eat more than 1 banana. Maybe in a smoothie I could eat more. Low fat doesn't really mean much if you're doing high sugar. My problem with knowing I'm full (i.e. not hungry anymore) is that I eat too fast. If I slow down my eating I recognize that point much easier. But, it's not easy for me to eat slowly. I still have to watch the clock to slow down my eating. Iodized salt ftw! Why is seaweed discouraged? I don't think I could live without tea. I'm a tea drinker, not a coffee drinker. Thank you so much for doing this! You can tell you were not your authentic self in the 2010 video... I love that you have evolved and are not afraid to admit that you were wrong!

I like how when you brought up the 2lb of vegetables, I naturally said, “well, when you cook it, it shrinks,” and then I got it. Wow, you were on something cray lol

Dude you're so right about FRK running out of material. I think a good portion of her videos are repeats including raw vegan cheesecake and tips on staying warm in the Bitter Texas cold.

I watched you back in the day when I was beginning to wander down that 80/10/10 path. Thankfully I never got too into it. Keep up these reaction vids, they are gold!!

I like that you are just as hard on yourself (maybe even harder) as on other people selling nonsense on youtube. Unlike Freelee for instance, you can admit you were wrong. Just don't feel too bad. It is natural to make mistakes and those people are incredibly persuasive. Keep up the good work!

"You don't have to worry about that anyway, oh my god, who worries about taking one extra sandwich and going like 'oh my god, i'm gonna gain weight, that's going to be horrible...-" Mhh, well i do. "You have an eating disorder." Case in point. Loved the video! You're such a lovely, genuine, positive person, love ya!

Those bananas looked perfect for a smoothie! (for me xD) My bf and I have both lived around the world and my bf prefers the concept of raw veganism, however, we both agree that that is only sustainable in countries like Thailand or Australia. The abundance of fresh fruit and veggies everywhere just invite you in so that you don't even crave anything else.

Haha, funny reaction. I ate fully raw myself for 8 months, semi low fat, before I went back to cooked food again. However, my digestion was really poor for as long as I then ate cooked food again. Now I eat raw again because that's what keeps my digestion awesome. I do eat probiotics. Did you have the same problem and how did you solve it?

I’m no vegan but I’ve been eating Kale since the late 90’s and I JUST started to sauté it. Fresh garlic , EVOO, herbs etc, sauté and then drop in the kale, turn off the heat and let it soften a little before you toss. Also can toss with a little hummus dressing. BTW, why can’t raw people eat garlic? That’s a sin!

I remember trying RT4 for about a month, a few years ago. I didn't have time or an adequate blender to make "datorade" so I would buy a container of dates and literally eat the whole damn thing for breakfast (along with a lot of water) to make sure that I was getting "enough carbs from readily available simple sugars". Just ignore the diarrhea from all the concentrated fruit fiber, right? I couldn't stand the sight of bananas after awhile, but would force myself to consume as many as I could in one sitting, again to ensure I was getting enough calories. The more calories the better! I would crave savory foods, and from the time I woke up in the morning, would think about what vegetable heavy dinner I was going to eat that evening. I would often eat an entire pound of pasta for dinner with some veggies, because I had seen Freelee doing it and recommending it. Or yeah, the famous potato and romaine lettuce feast (*eyeroll*). No legumes, few if any nuts or seeds (because if we just eat enough whole fruits and vegetables, we'll get plenty of EFA's in the perfect ratio!). I even felt guilty about the tiny bit of olive oil in my organic marinara sauce, or the miniscule sprinkle of sea salt I'd add to a finished meal. I considered giving up garlic and onion because of the dreaded sulfur compounds or whatever, but that was too much of a sacrifice for me. I'm not implying that we shouldn't be responsible, as any healthful, nutritionally sound diet is more than likely going to require some thought and adjustment of eating habits. But this was a fucking crazy, orthorexic mental prison, from which I'm still trying to escape. I was actually convinced for a while that this was the healthiest diet humans could eat. I was devasted when I had to give it up for monetary reasons (thank goodness!). I do want to be clear that there is a great deal of subjectivity and my own personal experience involved here. If someone wants to stick to a perfectly healthy, evidence-based diet, and not deviate at all, that doesn't make them orthorexic, as long as the eating plan is not overly restrictive to the detriment of their health. However, for me, any significant micromanagement of my diet is anxiety-provoking to the point that it severely affects my functioning, and I don't want to do it anymore. I've suffered from disordered eating which has manifested itself in different ways over the course of my life, and one of them is unnecessarily restrictive diets. I'm just starting to admit that they've given me a sense of control when much of my life has felt entirely beyond my control. Diets gave me "definitive" answers about what I should and shouldn't be eating, thereby lifting the burden off of me in running my own life. This is not a healthy, autonomous adult mindset. I don't want a perfect diet. There is no such thing. I want to strive for a nutritionally excellent diet, will accept days when it's just nutritionally adequate, and understand that I'm not going to die of some deficiency if my diet is sometimes suboptimal. It also has to be delicious and not leave me feeling unsatisfied or make me lose my mind. That's the best I can hope for. Sorry for the verbose comment. I feel very passionate about these issues, and wish the best for everyone on their journeys. I completely understand what it's like to be a slave to food, even under the guise of a well-meaning desire to be healthy.

By reacting to your old videos, you show your audience the maturity and wisdom you have gained from life experience (which also gives you credibility). A lot of people may reflect on their errors in life. But rarely would they admit them in a public forum to educate and benefit others, while allowing the comments to remain enabled subjecting themselves to potential ridicule. This takes humility and courage, and I hope people appreciate these videos and can learn from them. Thank you.

Ooooo also if you like the starchiness of a banana you should try baby bananas! They are the super short ones that are in some grocery stories and Mexican markets, different from plantains. I like them better, slightly less sweet and denser with a really yummy starchiness. Of course you’ve probably already had them having eaten exclusively fruit for years lol

Thank you for sharing your life so candidly. I'm not vegan, but I try to limit animal products and make ethical choices. Your videos have shown me some great vegan substitutes like mock meats etc. I'm totally in love with vegan mayonnaise! I really love that you can critique your own past behaviour and correct if needed, it shows that you are an authentic and honest person. Plus you have a great presentation style and screen presence. Thank you for sharing your life with us!

I really like these reaction videos. I have a very similar 80/10/10 background. I guess I'm kind of a failed 80/10/10-er. I even did coaching with Dr. Graham. I made it three weeks on the diet. Of course you start off on "Banana Island", where you only eat bananas for a week. I think at week two you add celery, if I recall. lol I think if you were an athlete, you might feel differently about the wastefulness of it. To me it just seems like one of many things people do that could be considered wasteful (a trip to the Grand Canyon, for instance), but could also just be considered enjoying and living a full life.

Thank you so much for this. One of my close friends started to follow this trend (many tried to tell her not to) and ended up in the hospital with a potassium overdose. The doctors actually told her that she should be dead right now and they didn't even know a person's potassium levels could get that high without killing them.
@2012salsahot7 жыл бұрын
thomas b yeah, trying to follow trends is so dangerous nowadays, I live in a country that barely has fruits, and only veggies are available are potatoes, cabbage, onions and carrots. And fast food chains are not allowed in the country, so, i guess trends never reach my country. Lol
