Another viewer pointed me to a great tutorial from iJustine - it's $30 but I've heard rave reviews. Currently at 4.8 stars out of 5 on the Mac App Store. Audio has to be the area I know the least about. I can do some solid sound effects editing, but when it comes to mixing, repairing, etc. ... I’m at a loss. For paid client work I hire out sound mixing. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. 😓

I knew Final Cut Express from years ago, but hadn't touched anything til this year. I got up and running in just a couple hours with iJustine's course from Ripple Training. It was $30! And somehow it plays right inside of FCPX. Justine does not deep-dive into all the powers of FCPX, but she shows you how she uses it for her needs. From there I turned to KZbin for more specified tutorials, but iJustine's course was the perfect way to get started FAST. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you so much for this channel! Those tip and mistakes etc videos are the best of the sort out there.

Excellent advice, as always - thanks for sharing. One aspect I'm not sure you covered in enough depth for new users - the Preference: "copy files to Library." To save on HD space, I unchecked this when I began using FCPX and learned the hard way that, for this user, I preferred to leave it checked so that the library, though large, is comprehensive. This is esp. true for those of us using a laptop on location and with multiple external drives. Nothing's worse than realizing you may have the FCPX library on hand but not the video files that are associated - ouch! With the cost of storage space continuing to decline, the tradeoff should be an easy one to make: keep it all together in one complete library while working on a project. If you wish, you can reduce the size of the library once the project is completed and archived.

Yeah, that entire concept needs a dedicated video, and I've added that to my to-do list for the channel. In watching it back before I uploaded I felt the same way - "this may be a bit too much of an overview for new editors to grasp" - so I'll have to make a dedicated video about it to help the beginners or those struggling with file management/free space better understand what the options are with FCPX. I do agree that it can be a HUGE time saver to store all the media in the FCPX library, and there are a lot of users out there where this workflow is best for them. Hope to get a video out about all of that in January! Sooooo much content I want to get out on the channel, and I have all of you to thank for watching, commenting, liking, sharing...it's allowing me to really focus on the channel and increase the quality of the videos, topics, etc. Thank you!!!

Something else that I'm working on but unfortunately won't have ready soon is a video going more in-depth about FCPX's Event Browser and how to use it to organize your footage, make selects, markup interviews, etc. vs. what I used to do in FCP7 (and others probably do in Avid and Premiere) is to use timelines/sequences to organize my footage and then pancake them and copy paste. A lot of my content covers the technical side of editing - menus, features, keyboard shortcuts, etc., and I'd definitely like to add more content about the creative side of video editing. Absolutely. For me, the best channel out there right now that's helping teach the creative side of video editing is This Guy Edits. Sven does a great job breaking down movies and their editing as well as talking in-depth about visual storytelling. About the best that you can do as far as I know is to add the default lower thirds title using the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + T. That will just add it to your edit where your playhead is - not sure you can do too much beyond that.

Thanks for the links to the Ben Mercer videos! I was a pretty avid Final Cut user pre version X (hehe see what I did there) but moved into more live production (news, sports etc) right when X came out. Anyways getting back into editing I find all the training is very good at "here's the tool and what it does" but not enough how to actually use it in real live projects especially ones with hundreds of hours of footage. Also, in one of your previous videos you mentioned having a bunch of projects on the go on your "project board" I think a cool video would be about your workflow when working on multiple projects at once or with multiple editors etc.

FCPXTour also has other contributors from TV who talk about their process when handling mass amounts of footage for sporting event coverage. Love your channel, Matthew. Thanks for all the videos. I currently use DaVinci Resolve Studio (paid version) and know it pretty well, but I’m thinking of switching to FCPX. Biggest concern I have is the lack of audio editing for things like adjusting LUFS and the need for plugins for features that are built into Resolve like object tracking.

Your concerns are certainly founded, Mark! FCPX is really great for vide editing, but DaVinci Resolve is king when it comes to color. FCPX may never come close. Same may apply to audio - where ProTools and Audition may be top of the game in that department. Final Cut has some powerful tools, but I have to imagine real sound mixers feel it's missing quite a bit. But I do think Apple has made Final Cut Pro X to be a dedicated video editing app that *can* work in high end pro workflows (with help from plugins, 3rd party apps, etc.) it is most likely made for content creators who are doing really great work ... but just don't get into the intricate post-production workflows we see in TV and film. And for those creators who really are great at all areas of post-production, DaVinci is showing that they want to target those users by having a single app that can do it all - media management, editing, sound, vfx, and color. FCP7 Studio used to be that way (although the apps were separate), but I think Apple wanted to simplify it and knew that KZbin, social media, etc. was going to be their target user group (and if Hollywood embraced it here and there, great, but not a big deal if they didn't).

I have some concerns about switching to FCPX, but I think they're more of a "how will I do this" rather than a "can I do this" type situation. Once I learn the program, I think it'll all good. I like all the suggestions but found the FCPX Facebook group caustic. Lots of people with the attitude that they were born knowing this stuff. I asked a question and got told to sell my computer 😂. I’m an airline pilot by trade and we’d never think of answering a newb with such a vile attitude. I think it’s immaturity/insecurity giving people a little stiff hard on ridiculing new people, So I steer clear of Facebook groups except zcam E2 which is much more approachable. KZbin is great. This video is an example of the good resource it is! Thank you

I agree that the Facebook groups can get a little rough when the more experienced editors chime in on the questions from newer users. It's unfortunate, and it's always my hope that the group admins will keep that in check. Good to know that airline pilots don't turn to the dark side with the younger pilots. 👎🏻 Seems like the comments on my channel, so far, are a relatively safe space for everyone. I'm honestly shocked that I haven't gotten more trolls/negativity. I'm sure it'll happen eventually.... Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

I agree with all that you said, but the two most important things, in my opinion, were not mentioned. You started with how to save space when editing on your boot drive. Wait. You should NEVER EDIT on your boot drive if possible! Not only are you asking the same drive to do the heavy lifting to make edits, but also, at the same time, read and keep the operating system functioning. Not only that, but editing, even with rendering and proxy files turned off, will quickly max out the drive that keeps the computer functioning. A maxed-out drive slows dramatically. I think your first order of business is to emphasize the importance of a separate media drive. The second most important thing to talk about is the paradigm shift. The magnetic timeline. Apple bungled the introduction of FCPX when it introduced the new way of editing, while at the same time, cancelling what was then the most popular NLE in the world; Final Cut Pro. The original Final Cut used track-based editing while Final Cut Pro X uses the Magnetic Timeline. You talked about people who dive head-long into just clicking around without first learning about FCPX. That's what people do. So, when FCPX was introduced and the legacy FCP taken away on the same day, most users of legacy Final Cut just clicked around FCPX and found it wouldn't work well as a track-based editor and migrated to Premiere, which had the same track-based workflow as legacy Final Cut. Many called Final Cut Pro X 'iMovie Pro' as a slur. But, if you don't understand the Magnetic Timeline, you won't get the speed that the Magnetic Timeline gives you. So, in summary, my Number One mention is to connect a separate drive for media so as to not choke and fill up your boot drive, and my Number Two is to make it clear that if you can take a few minutes of understanding the Magnetic Timeline, a whole new world of editing speed will open up for you. My wife recently tried Adobe Rush. Guess what? IT USES A MAGNETIC TIMELINE! The idea is getting traction. I suspect that Adobe sees the benefits of the Magnetic Timeline and is dipping a toe into the Magnetic Timeline waters to establish it with an intention to migrate Premiere in that direction in the future. I mean, once you understand the Magnetic Timeline, you'll never slow down again to use track-based editing.

Great input, Don! And I appreciate the advice on how to tweak the vid. I think I'm, for the most part, in agreement with you about editing from your computer's internal drive. I do think there are configurations out there with notebook computers that do allow for editing from the internal - with Apple making MacBook Pros that have 2, 4, and 8TB configurations, I think it's safe - if not encourage - to edit video or photos, etc. from the internal drive. Perhaps partitioning it is a good idea? I intend to upgrade my 2013 MacBook Pro (256GB internal SSD) because I want to be able to edit my KZbin content anywhere in my house or out in the world and not have to have dongles and drives to fuss with. Especially if my media is backed up at the studio on multiple drives. Would I do this with paid client work? Probably not, but for many of us we're creating a ton of content for social media, KZbin, family videos etc. (I do a ton of work on all three of those types of videos as well as all of my client work). I think your recommendation to covert paradigm shift in greater detail is a good one - I do link to a video in the description specifically about that paradigm shift (the video's even titled "Understanding the FCPX Paradigm"). I might actually make a dedicated video about it - not only the Magnetic Timeline but about the Event Browser as well and how you no longer need to sort and organize your media/selects in timelines but in the Event Browser (this work around in traditional NLEs often carries over to FCPX because some new users aren't learning the power of the Event Browser). Love your knowledge of all of this, Don. I hope you've seen the documentary about Apple's bungled roll-out - "Off The Tracks" - I really enjoyed it. If you haven't seen it, check it out!
