Everyone should make their own vanilla. A nice bottle, 3 split beans topped off with a good quality plain Vodka. You simply top it off from time to time and it lasts forever. It takes about 6 months of sitting before you can use it. I bought my beans on EBay for about $2 each for top quality grade A bourbon vanilla beans. I make them as gifts for Christmas. Everyone loves this!

IF there is an uptick in covid cases due to civil unrest, or we can't even GET TO the store, or in case of natural disaster we ALL need an extended pantry. I feel so much better that I put a small one together for myself - I am a widow and I do have 2 sons but do not want to place undue burden on them or anyone nor do I want to depend on govt.

I live in California, so I've always had a rotated pantry in case of a disaster. My house pantrys are stocked and so is our trailer. Also my mom lived through the depression and taught me to cook with very little. We were poor so I guess it was an easy lesson to learn. Lessons that have come in really handy. I cooked a meal for 8 and only spent $15. I wish the best to you. Have a nice day.

Will eating rancid food make you sick... also... can you eat rice that has been contaminated by rodents if you rince it off...
@judyg9889
@judyg9889 4 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldstarkey4336 Eating rancid food might not make you sick. But the nutrients are altered by rancidity; some say it can cause cancer. I'm sure that eating something rancid once by accident wouldn't harm you, but I wouldn't do it on a regular basis.. That's why it's best to store white rice instead of brown, whole wheat berries instead of ground, etc. Anything with fat can go rancid if not properly preserved. Except coconut oil; it has a very long shelf life. As far as mice...I'm not sure, because you do boil it. But they carry so many diseases I personally wouldn't try it; I would be afraid that urine/germs would have permeated the kernels.

With regards to canned goods, I had 6 cans of minced clams that were 7 years past the use by date. I decided to open one and knew I would know whether it was "bad" with the first twist of the can opener. Not only did everything smell fine, the liquid was still clear, didn't get cloudy, and the clams were the regular color. So, I opened three of the cans and made a batch of clam chowder. 😊

Nichole Moody, thanks babe! I “have been taught” and understand the concept of rotating stock. It’s about being prepared. I don’t use bottled water, as one example, however I kept a case on hand in case of an emergency. I threw it out because it expired. It wasn’t necessary to discard it, I have now learned from Mary. Nothing to do with rotating stock. I like to keep canned chicken on hand, in case of emergency, however I usually cook fresh or frozen. It’s not always about rotating stock, FYI. :)

Wow! This was such an informative visit with you today. I often go back to some of your older videos just for refreshment on some subject I might be thinking about. I have friends here at my Adult Apt. Complex that have never done any gardening or canning and are constantly throwing out perfectly good foods. It breaks my heart to see the waste and I often tell them I'll take it and use it. Just a few days ago, I was able to make your quick sweet pickles with cucumbers that were going to be thrown away. What a great save. Last week it was fresh, dirty beets from the garden. Most didn't want to bother taking time to wash and use them so I canned Harvard Beet and shared them with friends here. I'm being called the Chef here now..lol But at one time before farming, I did own 2 restaurants.

Mary, Thanks so much for such an information packed video. I think making a log book of what we have on hand and practicing rotation is important to each of the four corner pantries. That way we know what we have and how old it is, and what we need to purchase. Also encourages us to use what we have. I am so thankful that I had a pretty good storage put back and do not have to go to the grocery store very often during this. pandimic time. Still, being 79 and having children and gkids near, I am adding to my storage food and other supplies using your suggestions. We do not know what the future will bring come Fall. Thanks for sharing. Daniel turned 12 recently. He got Angel food cake (It's the only cake he'll actually eat, with all of the others he just licks off the icing) and Rocky Road ice cream. Dad got him a chalk board and white board sided storage box. He already dented the whiteboard side. It had markers, crayons, chalk, some paint, a chalk board eraser, two magnets, and a few sheets of paper inside of it. When I get around to it I will unlock two games on his tablet - Endless ABC (he loves that franchise which has friendly and cute monsters and is educational) and Piggy Bank which is a money counting/sorting one. First need to add the money to my prepaid card. Went to Dad's and Lee fixed where his roof was leaking and mowed his hill. They visited their friends Mary and Charlie yesterday. Lee plans to drop Daniel off at their house while he cuts our grass. Hopefully our yard has dried up enough. It was saturated with water for the past few weeks.

Hi Sweet Mary! I haven't visited in awhile, doesn't mean I don't think about you. I hope you and yours are safe and well. I am! I've been steadily working on building my extended pantry. Being 72 now, and living alone, my pantry can easily extend to feeding my family if it came to that. Given the current situation I'm seeing on grocery shelves, it looks like i'll be making bread again. I joined your newsletter today. Thanks for the free e-book!! Love from WNC, Elizabeth

This is Robert's better half Debbie. I was born in North Eastern Minnesota. Because of heavy snow there we always kept an extended pantry. Eventually my dad was transferred to Southern California. Again we kept an extended pantry because of earthquakes. I have never not had an extended pantry. It certainly has been a bit of a challenge to replace some items because of the virus. I am certainly glad that this has been a life long process.

Hi Jerin, my mom is just like your grandmother and she is in her mid 90s now! She never drank but she always had a bottle of whiskey on hand for medicinal purposes. Something she would do when she would get back from the dentist was to rinse her mouth out with whiskey. She claimed it killed all the germs that she may have picked up at the dentist. I always found this fascinating. But I’m amazed at how my mother has never had a major illness and has never been hospitalized other than for when she gave birth to me. Thank you for this, but, canned tomatoes including tomato sauce, do not last much longer than their used by dates. I don't know if it's the acid, but the cans will bulge or spray liquid when opening if they are kept much longer than the use by date. Also plastic water bottles do not last long either. You will notice that the bottles will start to collapse in on themselves after a while and they can eventually leak out. Better to use bottled water in glass jars. Popcorn may last forever, but after a few years it will NOT pop very well. You can grind it and use it that way. I know this from my own experience over the years.

Store bought canned tomatoes (and pineapple) should be used up regularly because their acid content messes with the metals they are stored in. A work around is to can your own (I used plastic Tatler or Harvest Guard lids) or recan into bottles the #10 restaurant size cans. It’s not the food that’s the problem, it’s the storage vessel.

Thank you for the kind words of support!! And I am so with you - I was so happy - being over 60 - that I had an extended pantry to fall back on and did not need to leave the house and go to the grocery store. Love, Mary

melis silem Oh smart! I was so unprepared for this pandemic - my biggest surprise? The toilet paper shortage. I’m still not sure what THAT was all about! I learned my lesson tho! I’m going to start my “hard times” pantry. Just don’t really know where to begin...toilet paper!! I think that’s a good starting point!

Hi Mary. Fellow VRA Fam! We live on a sailboat in Canada and I have had boxes of pasta go moldy in a cupboard which is under the kitchen seating. It isn't wet, but simply colder. There was enough moisture in the cardboard itself that the alphabet pasta went slightly moldy after 3 months. Still hard, but slightly green and fuzzy. My 5 year old was very sad! I love your channel and have shared it with others!! Thanks! Melanie Schooner Kiva

Living in Canada’s north we get all set for winter every fall. We used to use up our winter store in spring and summer thus not having to buy much, but with all the uncertainty around now we’ve kept up our supplies. I dehydrate my own veggies to use for soups in winter. Stored in my basement cool room that is about the same temp year round. At my age I don’t need to have stuff stay good for 30 years. I’ve used baking powder past it’s date and it worked fine. Thanks for the info on instant coffee. I will buy some because hubby has to have his coffee!

Stopped by again to say that I am so happy to tune in to your channel to see what awesome things you are sharing. I believe that we truly are in the last days just as the bible predicts. I was so worldly and crazy etc. and would have never guessed that I would take the sorrows of my life and be so grateful for them. For had I not experienced them, like sand in an oyster, ( my pearl is the revelation of Jesus Christ who I often call Yahusha Hamashiach), I would have been lost in the fast lane. The church of Rome has been a dark force in the world and all preaching has the first rider of revelation 6 as the antichrist but its not, its the Lamb of God/Yah riding out with an invitation to the wedding supper of the Lamb. Torah to the tribes has teaching video on revelation chapter 6. This is best thing I can share with you. A little food for the soul. I would so love to have dinner at your house. My my how blessed would that be. Yummy yummy yum yum. Ha ha ha. May our heavenly Father bless you and keep you. ❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤

Indeed 🙏💜🙏 Thank you for your response. Today is Yom Kippur and I am so grateful for what our high priest has done for us. Everyone moves in and out of growth and experiences. I have been studying a hidden history and I now believe that we are living in the timeline after the millennial reign of Christ. If you are interested, the KZbin channel Exploring Tartaria has a few videos on living in the last part of the bible where satan is released for a short time. Regardless of what you believe, it's not a salvation issue but for those of us who have looked into a hidden history, many think the puzzle pieces have come together. God bless you. 🙏💜🙏 Our redeemer lives!!! Hallelujah 🙏💚🙏

We keep all of our different types flour in a deep freezer. It enables us to keep a good stock on hand because we bake all of our own breads and treats as well as make homemade pasta. As of yet we haven't had a bag go bad. We rotate it out as we stock it and it's still as good as the day we stored it. The main thing is to either transfer it into a gallon ziplock (per 5 pounds) or place the unopened paper bag(s) into 2 gallon ziplocks (you can fit 2 bags per side by side) so condensation doesn't damage the bag and ruin the flour. The flours that come in plastic bags can go directly in the freezer without worry. This also works for yeast. We've kept instant yeast for several years in the freezer and it's never failed to work. We still vividly remember when Covid hit and there wasn't flour or yeast available anywhere so we are very diligent to buy an extra bag or two of these items when we grocery shop.

I have 72-hr emergency food crammed into one of those large pretzel containers from Costco. There's something for breakfast, lunch & tea, drinks & snacks/comfort food. It's portable so easy to pack in the car in the event I have to leave home. I'm aware it's not got the most perfect nutrition, so I have a small can of Nestle Sustagen Nutrition Top-up powder & a small shaker to mix it up in with water. This is a kit I put together last bushfire season. It's easy to check over the ingredients a couple of times a year when the clocks change, and use up things that are getting a bit old, if I really feel they should be replaced. But there's a great peace of mind that comes with being prepared even in this small way.

The botulism cases in the US is extremely low. Most well canned foods will be good 50 years after you are dead! There was a river boat study on canned goods that involved three laboratory to test them and not one of them I had any problem whatsoever. Things may dark in a bit or not look quite the same but there is nothing that will kill you. Dr. Elizabeth MD Ph.D Ph.D
