IF there is an uptick in covid cases due to civil unrest, or we can't even GET TO the store, or in case of natural disaster we ALL need an extended pantry. I feel so much better that I put a small one together for myself - I am a widow and I do have 2 sons but do not want to place undue burden on them or anyone nor do I want to depend on govt.

I live in California, so I've always had a rotated pantry in case of a disaster. My house pantrys are stocked and so is our trailer. Also my mom lived through the depression and taught me to cook with very little. We were poor so I guess it was an easy lesson to learn. Lessons that have come in really handy. I cooked a meal for 8 and only spent $15. I wish the best to you. Have a nice day.

Will eating rancid food make you sick... also... can you eat rice that has been contaminated by rodents if you rince it off...
@judyg98894 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldstarkey4336 Eating rancid food might not make you sick. But the nutrients are altered by rancidity; some say it can cause cancer. I'm sure that eating something rancid once by accident wouldn't harm you, but I wouldn't do it on a regular basis.. That's why it's best to store white rice instead of brown, whole wheat berries instead of ground, etc. Anything with fat can go rancid if not properly preserved. Except coconut oil; it has a very long shelf life. As far as mice...I'm not sure, because you do boil it. But they carry so many diseases I personally wouldn't try it; I would be afraid that urine/germs would have permeated the kernels.

Everyone should make their own vanilla. A nice bottle, 3 split beans topped off with a good quality plain Vodka. You simply top it off from time to time and it lasts forever. It takes about 6 months of sitting before you can use it. I bought my beans on EBay for about $2 each for top quality grade A bourbon vanilla beans. I make them as gifts for Christmas. With regards to canned goods, I had 6 cans of minced clams that were 7 years past the use by date. I decided to open one and knew I would know whether it was "bad" with the first twist of the can opener. Not only did everything smell fine, the liquid was still clear, didn't get cloudy, and the clams were the regular color. So, I opened three of the cans and made a batch of clam chowder. 😊

@DonnaBMacK4 жыл бұрын
Nichole Moody, thanks babe! I “have been taught” and understand the concept of rotating stock. It’s about being prepared. I don’t use bottled water, as one example, however I kept a case on hand in case of an emergency. I threw it out because it expired. It wasn’t necessary to discard it, I have now learned from Mary. Nothing to do with rotating stock. I like to keep canned chicken on hand, in case of emergency, however I usually cook fresh or frozen. It’s not always about rotating stock, FYI. :)

I have friends here at my Adult Apt. Complex that have never done any gardening or canning and are constantly throwing out perfectly good foods. It breaks my heart to see the waste and I often tell them I'll take it and use it. Just a few days ago, I was able to make your quick sweet pickles with cucumbers that were going to be thrown away. What a great save. Last week it was fresh, dirty beets from the garden. Most didn't want to bother taking time to wash and use them so I canned Harvard Beet and shared them with friends here. I'm being called the Chef here now..lol But at one time before farming, I did own 2 restaurants.

My Great Great Grandmother did not drink, but always had whiskey on hand for if someone got sick. 😊 She lived to 97 years old, so I will take that advice. I really enjoyed this video!

Hi Jerin, my mom is just like your grandmother and she is in her mid 90s now! She never drank but she always had a bottle of whiskey on hand for medicinal purposes. Something she would do when she would get back from the dentist was to rinse her mouth out with whiskey. She claimed it killed all the germs that she may have picked up at the dentist. I always found this fascinating. But I’m amazed at how my mother has never had a major illness and has never been hospitalized other than for when she gave birth to me. Be sure to head over to my KZbin channel’s home page where I share lots of playlists of videos that I think you will enjoy. I was wrongly told white basmati rice has a used by date. Now I don’t need to hurry to use 2 bags of rice as a present to me. 7 kg each. I live to cook and and be thrifty. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your videos!!! I just found them last night and have binge watched many so far! So much useful information! Thank you so much!!! I have a question about dehydrating (fruits) for example. Do you recommend it? Can fruits be rehydrated and eaten normally or do they taste better just eating them dry? Do they last long? Please excuse my ignorance i know nothing about this. Do you have a video about dehydrating? PS. My Mother might be your neighbor. She lives in that area.

Thank you, for the through explanation! I wondered what lasts and what goes bad and when! When I ran out of flour to feed my starter, I found an old clamp jar of possibly before bleached flour: so I fed it that- and interestingly, the flour smelled stale ( after maybe 15 years, in my back of my pantry), but it kept the starter alive until I could find better flour and the fact it was bleached before stopped being a problem for the starter when it smelled stale ( the jar had kept bugs out - but I had moved and not rotated it well... ) ( for quarantine / self isolation store shelf stocking problems here a bit ) ... I did eventually dry - out my starter anyway... : I had used your directions to have made it since about Feb., before we knew the shortages would come. (The starter still works, if I re-hydrate it ... but I had also 'cheated', and used a little honey to start it way back (as a chef showed) . )

I love your channel! The only thing: the bone broth (or meat dishes) contain dead animal parts .. And removing those from my diet ( including vitamins: except like if served such , which only happened once a year or so since May - 2018) really helped me, to advance frequency plane levels, and 'succeed' , empower myself! {People can see Quartz Crystal's details on leaving meat out : I had done that a half year before seeing her advice. There is even a way to reverse aging, for those with a 'soul', if one is willing to embrace the habits to raise frequency}. My leg cellulose (lumps) went away that season, and then keeping sugar low too - halted my 'pre-diabetes'. My point: the myth that meat is necessary for health is the opposite- meat keeps frequency low (and I can only guess that the hormones in it were causing my cellulose). The best way to survive, in this U.S. Civil War a foot : is keeping one's own (and one's family's) frequency plane as high as possible.

Thanks for sharing. Daniel turned 12 recently. He got Angel food cake (It's the only cake he'll actually eat, with all of the others he just licks off the icing) and Rocky Road ice cream. Dad got him a chalk board and white board sided storage box. He already dented the whiteboard side. It had markers, crayons, chalk, some paint, a chalk board eraser, two magnets, and a few sheets of paper inside of it. When I get around to it I will unlock two games on his tablet - Endless ABC (he loves that franchise which has friendly and cute monsters and is educational) and Piggy Bank which is a money counting/sorting one. First need to add the money to my prepaid card. Went to Dad's and Lee fixed where his roof was leaking and mowed his hill. They visited their friends Mary and Charlie yesterday. Lee plans to drop Daniel off at their house while he cuts our grass. Hopefully our yard has dried up enough. It was saturated with water for the past few weeks.

Living in Canada’s north we get all set for winter every fall. We used to use up our winter store in spring and summer thus not having to buy much, but with all the uncertainty around now we’ve kept up our supplies. I dehydrate my own veggies to use for soups in winter. Stored in my basement cool room that is about the same temp year round. At my age I don’t need to have stuff stay good for 30 years. I’ve used baking powder past it’s date and it worked fine. Thanks for the info on instant coffee. I will buy some because hubby has to have his coffee!

Mary, regarding canned goods, I had heard at one point that the newer cans with the flip tops were not as solid (long lasting) as the cans that require a can opener. Any thought on this? You are beyond awesome! 💗

Thank you for this very timely and helpful video. I certainly did not know about a lot of this! I really appreciate you doing all the research and presenting it in a clear and easy manner. One request I have: Could you perhaps do a future video on not wasting vege and fruit "scraps" and clever/new ways of using them that doesn't relegate them to stocks or compost? For example, I JUST learned 2 days ago that blanching and then stirfrying curly kale stems makes them delicious and edible. I feel like you would know many more similar things for other parts that people may throw away and really don't need to? In any case, thank you again for all you do!!!

Broccoli stems go well in soups. Cut the into circles - “medallions”. If they’re large, cut in haves or quarters. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

In 49 Years of marriage I have only had 2 cans from the grocery go bad in the pantry. One was tomato sauce and the other peaches. Both leaked years apart. Nothing home canned has ever gone bad, we eat it too fast because it taste so good!

That's what mine were too! Canned tomato and canned peaches

We keep all of our different types flour in a deep freezer. It enables us to keep a good stock on hand because we bake all of our own breads and treats as well as make homemade pasta. As of yet we haven't had a bag go bad. We rotate it out as we stock it and it's still as good as the day we stored it. The main thing is to either transfer it into a gallon ziplock (per 5 pounds) or place the unopened paper bag(s) into 2 gallon ziplocks (you can fit 2 bags per side by side) so condensation doesn't damage the bag and ruin the flour. The flours that come in plastic bags can go directly in the freezer without worry. This also works for yeast. We've kept instant yeast for several years in the freezer and it's never failed to work. We still vividly remember when Covid hit and there wasn't flour or yeast available anywhere so we are very diligent to buy an extra bag or two of these items when we grocery shop.

Store all whole grain flours in the freezer. Store flax seeds and ground flax meal in the freezer, whole seeds and nuts as well. If you have room store all herbs in the freezer. Slows down deterioration.
