🟢The Chick-a-dee Call / Song
Where Chickadees got their name. Males and females use it, which can be heard all throughout the year, especially in fall and winter. There are 4 main uses, to alert to the presence of predators, to keep in contact or locate one another, to communicate about a food source, and for coordinating group movement.
🟢Tseet Call
If you want to locate these darling birds, this is the one important call to take note of. Made Year-round by both sexes, this sound is used almost constantly. Used mainly as a way to signal the caller’s location to other members of a flock who are very nearby, also used in encounters with individuals they don’t know.
🟢High zee Alarm
Used when they see a Raptor quickly flying by in high pursuit or is in attack mode. A really high-pitched call that can vary depending on the type of predator detected, and how dangerous the threat could be. When this call is given which is mostly by males all the other chickadees immediately stop everything they are doing and remain motionless until they hear a chickadee call letting them know all is clear. Even other species of birds understand this cal.
🟢Fee Bee Song
It is mainly produced by males and can be heard throughout the year but more so in late winter and especially during Spring. Often the Fee bee song is referred to as the “hey sweetie” which fits perfectly since one of the reasons males sing it is to charm a female, also described as sounding like cheeseeee-burger. Used to signal aggression to other males, defend a territory, and attract and arouse females.
🟢The Gargle Song / Call
This call is an aggressive, vocalization that lasts just half a second in total. it is complex and varies a lot. They are given by males and are associated with dominance establishment and territory defense.
The gargle vocalization is easily heard from the middle of winter into Spring and again in Fall. Gargles can also be given in a sexual context, sometimes during a male's dawn chorus performance; these Gargles are not associated with aggression but are often associated with copulation.
🟢Broken dee Call
The broken dee can only be heard during the breeding season. It sounds similar to a baby chickadee, however, it is much different and if you hear it then you know you have yourself a female since it is only females who make it. They begin using it once the nest cavity has been completed and through early incubation.
If the male is nearby, the calls are often accompanied by Wing Quivering and usually elicit feeding by the male.
🟢Faint Feebee Call
This call is very much like the Feebee song but is always much lower in amplitude. This call is given by both males and females during the breeding season, and usually near the nest. Often when the male arrives at the nest with food he uses this faint feebee to let his mate know he is there. The female also uses it when inside the nest to alert her nestlings to feeding time. As babies near fledging, it is used again by the male, as a way to encourage the young to leave the nest.
🟢Hiss Alarm
This call is only heard inside the nest or other enclosed small spaces and is used typically by an incubating female when she is startled especially by an intruder trying to get inside. This is widespread among the Paridaefamily and has been given the name, Snake display. Chickadees do this in order to hopefully scare any intruders away.
🟢Squawk Call
Another call only heard in the nest is associated with parental Provisioning by either sex. The purpose is to stimulate the nestings to open their mouths for feeding.
🟢Begging Dee Call
Only heard during late spring and throughout summer this call is made by the adorable fledglings to obtain food from their parents as well as to let their parents know where they are. Honestly, unless they are napping there is rarely a moment when they aren't making this begging call.

What an assortment of vocals they have, I just love them. I don’t get many visits to feeder at this time of year but I certainly hear them in the woods every morning. I left the caterpillars on my trees for them and they must be feasting as the number of caterpillars is decreasing. I was told my trees will be defoliated if I don’t treat but I refused as birds need them to feed their young. So I lose a few leaves it’s acceptable to me.

You’re the best! I hope more people will continue to do as you have. Caterpillars and insects generally are critically important to bird populations. Bird feeders alone won’t sustain future generations. If that subject interests you I would recommend looking into native plants to your area (if you haven’t already) that you can add to your garden. Also please consider checking out Doug Tallamy here on KZbin. He gives great perspective and also points out, as you just said, that caterpillars won’t defoliate your plants. Additionally Home Grown National Park, and NWF Plant Finder are great resources. Sorry if you already knew all that. I just wanna make sure the helpful people know the possibilities!

@@BrettVano thank you for info, have to check out home grown national park and NFW plant finder. Have watched a few Doug Tallamy videos, wealth of knowledge. Been trying to plant more natives too, so enjoyed seeing the birds eating the seeds from plants last winter.

I love this. I used to live where I kept 50 lb bags of sunflower seed in a metal garbage can, and I fed everything.....and I mean, everything. One day, a chickadee landed on a gloved hand....I said "How you doing today baby?".....and it hopped up on my shoulder...looked me in the eye, yipped at me and flew off. That'll make for an awesome day!

Sadly, I don't get chickadees where I am now. I know they live close by, just not in my neighborhood, and I miss having them around. I have goldfinches that discovered my yard, that come by several times a day, and I have a resident pair of cardinals that have been bringing 3 babies with them the last few days. They often perch on top of the fence at the back of the property and wait for food from mum and dad, which is awesome to watch. But I miss those little chickadees, always the sweetest little feathered friends!

I miss these calls & songs soooo much! Here in CT, the Chickadees are abundant at my feeders during the Fall/Winter, but seem to transition away from a seed diet during the Spring/Summer. Same with the Tufted Titmice. Still get a few, but not a ton. I guess the cool trade-off is the awesome warm weather breeding birds I get to see. I have 2 pairs (male & female) of Rose Breasted Grosbeaks who park themselves on my feeders daily, chomping away on peanuts & sunflower seeds, totally oblivious to the Finches & Cardinals that keep trying to barge in on them. It's so cute and hilarious! Great video, Leslie!

I have watched all your chickadee videos a few times over and have always wondered why I've never been able to hear the fee-bee call and was actually surprised to hear they even made this sound. Chickadees are a favoured regular visitor so I couldn't have missed it. It bugged me enough that I eventually looked it up. Turns out Chestnut-backed chickadees (in BC) don't make that sound. So I wasn't missing it. Or rather I am now because it sounds so cute in the videos. :)

Just realized they are actually 2-3 times faster than humans wrt reaction times. If thats so, then it makes sense why their vocal communications are so fast. We learned to pack information into a single, often multisyllabic word. Birds, even the highly communicative and intelligent chicadees have to make do with much smaller brains, so they put less information into each sound but repeat them for different meanings. Plus, it helps to stick to the basics in communications when predators are a constant threat. P.s. Slow to .25 speed for a glimpse into how dinosaurs talked back in the day!
