I had a 1989 Ford F 250 4.9 straight six. Truck lasted 600,000 miles. It also had a three speed overdrive manual transmission. Another great truck was the Ford ranger early 1990s with a 3. 0 V6. Trucks were bulletproof and lasted 4 to 500,000 miles.

The company I work for has a fleet of Honda Fits from 2011-2013. Most of those have 250,000-300,000 + miles on them. One has 376,000 miles on it. They all have the original engine and transmission. They've basically only had oil and filter, tires and brakes. No flushes, or fluid change outs. They are always seriously abused and idle alot. While not my style, I'm seriously impressed with how they've held up.

Back in 1995, I was stationed at Adak, Ak. with a car that made everyone laugh every time we see it on the road. It was an old Honda Civic (I don’t recall what year or model) but I’m guessing an early 80’s model. Rounder angled and stodgy looking civic!! Anyhow the reason it was so comedic was that it was such a rust bucket with a missing hood, thereby exposing the engine in plain view. The car would be seen once or twice a week by us being driven around the base. What was so amusing was with no hood , when it snowed which was a very frequent thing in Adak island, the engine and the engine bay would be covered with snow and ice with icicles everywhere. But this ordinary-looking ugly brown civic was an un-killable machine due to it being continuously being driven through the cold and snow in one the most hostile environment that I can think of.

BMW and Mercedes are 'overengineered' and too complex. I've always driven french cars here in Europe and their engines are mainly bullet proof. That's why even BMW and Mercedes put Renault and Peugeot diesel engines in their cars. Tastes differ. We consider japanese cars ugly for most of the time and that's why only Toyota sells reasonably well here.

My mom grew up in the country, second gen. American , her dad, my grandfather, after serving in WWII started his civilian life as a pyrotech. He carved roads in mountainsides, and saved his money and started a logging co. He picked me up a couple times and took me along for the ride. He drove that diesel pusher up and down windy skinny dirt switchbacks that would would make your hair stand on end. He told me that anyone can drive a fast car, but not everyone can drive a car fast. It wasn't until my mom taught me how to drive that I understood what he meant. We've all heard the saying, "women drivers no survivors" and as a rule that's not too far off the mark, but for every rule there is an exception. And my mom is one of those exceptions, and subsequently so is my sister, I was riding with her a week or so ago, and I made note of her skill and said to thank mom for showing us both the secrets of the wheel. I drive a POS econo box gerbil on a wheel powered car. Last time I got pulled over the officer asked me, "do you know how fast you were going?" I looked him right in the eye, and asked him, "Did I get to 100, I was trying to wind this thing upto a 100 but I can't take my eyes off the road anywhere near 80 cause it shakes a bit" He started laughing his ass off, cause he knew as well as I did, the only way that car would do 100mph is if I drove it off a cliff. Still prior to pulling me over I was leaving traffic behind me at a furious pace. I should also mention that making the cop laugh and being honest at the same time, remember I said around 80 she get shaky, I was doing 79 mph. He let me go with, "have a nice day" not even a warning. Cops are human too, try treating them that way, whatcha got to lose?

Once she was done with it and moved on to an RX350, I refused to get rid of the car because it runs so good. both my son's learned to drive on that car. finally, earlier this year my father in law needed a car so with 230,000 miles I sold it to him for $1. then he proceeds to find .68 of change left in the car so he brags that he got a Lexus for $.32. Among these cars, my personal choice would be Honda, both Civic and Accord, although a bit older version with the naturally aspirated engine and manual transmission (just a personal preference). It's strange that most car buyers just do not care anymore about long term reliability. In the 80s reliability was talked about by almost everyone. In fact reliability seemed to be a bigger issue than looks performance, style or even rust to most people.

I agree, but also the reliability in cars isn't there anymore either. Like they once were in the 80s & 90s. I used to own a 2010 Chevy Impala that was a good car over the years. After that I purchased a 2014 Toyota Camry, which had issues. I got rid of it now I have a 2018 Camry with the newest body style and it is giving me some weird issues and this one was made in Japan. At this point I don't know what to think anymore. I still want something nice and stylish but reliable as well. The hype of the Honda,Toyota & Nissan back in the 80s&90s are gone. You still have a good crowd of fans but others have moved on.

I don't know about you and the OP of the video, late model cars aren't going to last as long as cars made in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. They are a lot more complex, have a lot of electronic gizmos and plastic crap on them these days that are becoming more cheaply made. Now they have plastic water pumps, plastic radiators, plastic inside the engine that fits in between the head gasket, plastic crap every where. Theres a reason why Mechanics tend to drive older cars. Scotty Kilmer owns all older generation Toyotas. Oldest one is a 94 Celica. More simpler cars back then that were better made with less plastic crap and gizmos. I don't think a late model Camry with GDI engine would compete with an early 2000s Camry in terms of reliability and longevity. A big jump to GDI is a big risk.

I am looking forward to driving this for the next decade. I do have a 2016 ram 1500 big horn. I'm lucky to say it just hit 110. With only work done was fluid changes and brakes. I'm a care nut, so I tend to coat most engine area electric with linseed oil to take care of the new England electrical corrosion issues. The truck still drives like new still. I use it as an actual truck. I'm sure shocks will be next. Great video and very informative. Wanted to trade it in for the new Trundra, but I have over a dozen friends constantly bring them into the shop. Im not convinced on the turbo 6 yet

I drive a 01' GS300 which is turning 200k miles this week. The battery light just came on. I should trash the car. Won't last another 10 miles. If I drove a dodge I might be actually thinking that! It's been years of trouble free driving. Love this car. Thank you for your vids. God's Love

Sean E. I had GS300 did out to my son it has 255,000 miles, just changed the water pump and timing belt but the shop foreman at it local Toyota dealer told me the 2JZ inline 6cyl engines are good but the oil pumps have 2 brass n rubber seels that go bad and leak oil which is what mine did, it cost a small fortune to repair, drop the transmission pull the oil pan then oil pump n change those 2 seals, beside that they are very reliable vehicles, that same engine came in the Supras so they do get up and go, good luck with your GS, I currently drive an 07 Tacoma with 172,000 miles with a timing chain, your GS has a belt, a Toyota mechanic told me those timing belts can last quite a while he said he saw some with 200,000 MI, so changing them every 70,000 like they recommend not really needed, but to each their own.

@@rickiedecuir9909 I have that leak also. I was hoping it was merely a oil pan seal but not so lucky I guess. Thank you for the heads up

@@seane.9937 no problem, I just kept adding oil when it got low and changed the filter when it was time, to bad these leaks come up otherwise a perfect motor.

@@rickiedecuir9909 yeah I just keep an eye on the oil. My oil always looks honey color. Even at 5k miles of driving. Maybe there is some benefit to constantly adding fresh oil.

@@seane.9937 My son that had my GS got pulled over for expired license tag no driver's license and outstanding tickets that he did not pay, the car was brought to the impound and I refused to help him anymore, he already cost me $1,500 bucks after the car was repaired so he lost my car and now he's on foot, he's my son and I love him but sometimes you have to let them hit rock bottom before they learn anything, it would have cost me another two grand for him to get the car back, that's just too bad.

What's the best station wagon out there please? Is it the Hyundai i30 Wagon in lieu of Volvo's high price? Or is it possibly the Subaru Outback?
